In 1996-1997 James Spader was in this adult orientated movie "Crash" in which his character and others get turned on by almost dying in car crashes, and especially turned on by the injuries that cause these accidents. Essentially finding arousal with death and flirting with death.

So did Joss Whedon, as the writer of Welcome to the Hellmouth, see this movie?

As the episodes seemingly innocent exchange between Cordelia & Buffy might have been an early insight into Buffy and how she needs " a monster in her man", making love to Angel in Season 2, after nearly dying, and why she gets into that wild relationship with Spike later on.

The parallels are intriguing, if a little deviant.

Loved that movie and Deborah Kara Unger became one of my favourites after that. James Spader was best known in "Sex, Lies and Videotape" and "Pretty in Pink" and a small role in "Wall Street". In Pretty in Pink, he was a rich preppie and to some extent, the villain in the piece, so Buffy's penchant for bad boys (who happen to be dead) may be foreshadowed here.
