About Buffy The Animated Series...
Two weeks back, the news started leaking that something was happening with the animated version of Buffy. A couple of years ago, some work had been done on the concept, with Jeph Loeb, now supervising producer on Smallville and writer of DC's Superman/Batman, in charge.
After the powers that be killed it, word got out revealing that Eric Radomski, of Batman: The Animated Series and Spawn, had been working on the show. Designs by a guy named Eric Wight spread across the web, and it's his work that we're liberally borrowing to illustrate this piece.
And why not? In an almost unheard of but definitely serendipitous event, the creative team has been reassembled. We'll let Loeb explain why.
It took a while for Jeph to get back to us beyond a brief confirmation. Evidently Smallville had started back up just as this story broke, so finding time for a Q & A became a tricky task.
At last we got the time. And so, here's what Jeph Loeb can tell us without calling down the wrath of The Master...in this case, Joss Whedon. Sshhhh...
Fanboy Planet: When did this series get resurrected? Do you have a network interested? Is there a target date?
Jeph Loeb: Like all great Buffy stories, this has to do with resurrection. We needed someone to pull the stake out of our show so we could live again. Fox Television did that and we're very grateful. As to when it appear and where, we're keeping that under wraps right now!
Fanboy Planet: How much of your original team is back on, or are you still working on that?
Jeph Loeb: Everyone came back. It really is wonderful material and we wanted to see it through.

Fanboy Planet: It's been a couple of years, you'd moved on to Smallville. What was your initial reaction when Joss Whedon called?
Jeph Loeb: Actually, it was Chris Buchanan, who runs Mutant Enemy (Joss Whedon's production company -- but you knew that), who called. We just laughed. It had been so long and there had been so many false starts we just agreed that when it was actually animated THEN we'd get excited.
Joss and I didn't see each other until the first recording session. It was like we'd been time warped -- two years later and here we were again!
Fanboy Planet: Are you going to try to juggle work on both shows, or do you leave Young Superman (as our Japanese readers call it) behind?
Jeph Loeb: No, I'm starting the fourth season of Smallville as the Supervising Producer. Most of what I had to do on Buffy Animated was completed before I left. I had spent a year and a half getting her ready -- she just needed to give birth!
Fanboy Planet: What's the take? Is this still a sort of retelling of the missing moments from their high school days, or will this be post-Angel?
Jeph Loeb: It's all Buffy Year One.
Left: Not brooding, just heart-throbbing.
For the fans, we've always seen it as Episode 7.5. Buffy has met Angel. He's this brooding dark romantic character. She doesn't know yet about Angelus or any of that stuff. It's quite a lot of fun being able to tell stories that you know what will happen in the years to come!
Fanboy Planet: How much of the original cast will you have -- and are there any cool new talents doing voices?
Jeph Loeb: Some of that we're still keeping as surprises. Alyson (Willow), Nicholas (Xander) and Tony (Giles) have all taken part -- that much we'll say.
Fanboy Planet: Is there anything you're allowed to tell me that I can't think of right now?
Jeph Loeb: Well, that would be telling now, wouldn't it? All we can say is that there will be more announcements throughout the summer!

So there you have it. What can be known at this time. What Jeph didn't mention, but we can still safely extrapolate, is that this Year One includes Dawn, as of course, her very existence must have caused major retroactive continuity in Buffy's life.
We're excited. 2004 looked bad for Whedon fans with the ending of Angel. But now we've got a hot comic series (Astonishing X-Men), a movie in production (Serenity -- the big-screen version of Firefly) and now ...cartoons. You gotta love it.

I am so psyched. This is the perfect kind of show to sait my Buffy-lust...err...but not lust in the way of me wanting Buffy sexually or anything...anyhow, I always thought that season 1 was kind of weak compared to the other seasone. That is of course because it was the first season that they did, and TV shows are always weak during the first little bit. A re-imagining with Dawn in the mix...think of the possibilities. I wonder how they are going to explain the story developments that happened in the live action show. I mean, they aren't going to keep re-telling us the parts that we already know are they? To do so would give the audience that "been there done that" feeling. It's going to be hard, but if anyone can pull it off, it's Joss.

Wow...Thank god, the Buffyverse isn't dead yet. This Dawn thing sounds promising, since they are essentialy re-writing Buffy history. Too bad it's another four years until she finds out she's the Key. Maybe if the show lasts, they can continue telling stories from later seasons. BTW, did Buffy and gang ever get the real memories back, where Dawn didn't exist?

I got my TV Guide yesterday for the week beginning June 20 and it had a small article about the Buffy Animated series with a drawing of Buffy herself. Looks good!!

I love the whole Dawn thing, but I wonder how it will affect the storyline. I guess the big prob is that the story is locked down, and everyone knows it. They would be hard pressed to write in something about our characters or the story that everyone doesn't already know. We know how everyone's character progresses over the next 7 years. It will be hard to picture Cordy as a cold heartless biatch because of the way her character progressed later on Buffy, and on Angel.

Don't get me wrong, I am more excited about this cartoon than everyone else I know, but there are a lot of things that they would have to overcome for it to be good. Also, watching reruns is different. I have the Buffy DVD's, and every time I get a new one, I go through the entire series over again(which takes bloody forever to do). I love being able to watch it over, and over again. But I guess what I am expecting from the toon is a bit different. I'm not really looking for a re-telling of Buffy with Dawn in it. I want it to be something I haven't seen before. With it taking place during a familar time frame it will be hard for them to really create something that isn't just a re-telling. I hope I hope I hope though.

I have to disagree. But agree. I wonder what happens on eps when those months or weeks pass between shows. Hopefully, if made, it'll fill us in.

Sure we will be seeing some of the same charecters(IE: The Master probably) but we will not being the same episodes just put into cartoon mode, this is basically an alternate world, so things will be different. Even Buffy and Angels first kiss or Buffy finding out that he is a vampire. But this will most likely just stay in the highschool years for the cartoons run, since lets face it, those were its funnest and best days. At the end of the show they may pull an x-men:evolution and let us see a glimpse into the all of the charecters future but I think that is about it.
But if they do go beyond the highschool years then that will be very intresting, espcially since they keep all the main charecters, but ofcourse things will be toned down since it will most likely be airing in the morning for little kids to watch and not on prime time. Which would be great.

The cartoon may be lacking what made the show special, but we'll never know for sure. The Simpsons turned out great, right?

Totally. Some of my favorite shows are/were cartoons. Family Guy, Futurama, Simpsons(older ones), and Undergrads are/were all great shows and catered to an older audience. Plus there are some great examples of animations that appeal to both a younger, and older crowd(Toy Story, Finding Nemo). If anyone can pull it off, it's Joss. But like I said...there are some definite concerns that need be quelled for it to really turn out great.

Interesting that you should mention Toy Story. I think we all know one of the writers was from that movie...*cough...Joss...cough*
I think that if Joss does have creative control and a major input the animated Buffy will be great but if he's busy elsewhere (Serenity for example) we have to hope that he puts a really good team together and points them in the right direction...
