Lol! S4 really is the forgotten stepchild of the buffyverse. I left it out because it doesn't really fit in with the first 3 seasons or the later 3. The college year for Buffy was just so forgettable. Or maybe we intentionally block it from our memory so we don't have to revisit anything about the Initiative. 😛 I appreciate it as a kind of transition season into our characters becoming adults, and for giving us "Hush" and "New Moon Rising", but not much else.

Season 4 is my least fav but I don't really have a huge problem with Season 4. I loved it too. I love every season & Season 4 had Hush so that should never be forgotten
 
Some unpopular opinions :

James Marsters's acting doesn't do anything for me and it often takes me out of the scene.

I prefer This Year's Girl to Who Are You by a large margin.

Dawn and Buffy's relationship with her was the best thing about the last 3 seasons of the show.

  • I have never particularly liked or connected with Buffy as a character

I agree with all except the first point and I'm a bit undecided on the last. The Gift was a much better finale than Chosen, and also S6 and S7 were terrible especially with continuity and character assassination, but I'm still glad we had two more seasons of BtVS.
 
Since the opposite one keeps coming up, here's my unpopular opinion:

If you call Restless the season 5 premiere and Primeval the season 4 finale, (since Primeval fits the format of the rest) The Gift is the worst possible season finale to be the end of the show.

I want to hear more about this. I would agree with you except for Becoming. Becoming would be the most depressing ending to the show ever, imo. Hero wins but loses everything that matters to her is, to me, way worse than hero dies heroic death.

Alright I'm gonna go ahead and explain all before I get to Becoming in case everyone else disagrees. They definitely could have had Graduation Day because lots of shows end with high school, everything was at the high school, they have to justify them all hanging out after graduation, etc. Prophecy Girl I think they could have ended because the vibe of the first season was so different, and the show grew up a ton immediately in season 2. Grave is a very "everyone keep fighting" moment, as well as highlighting love triumphing over all, which is a great theme to finish with.

Becoming is certainly the other tough one. With either Becoming or The Gift, the show is obviously ending tragically. However I think Becoming as an ending is more suited to the show. If you were to end a show about "one girl in all the world" tragically, I think the best way to do it is have her life become so much that she is literally one girl in all the world. It's horrific, but it would have made sense. The Gift, however, is not what the show is about. If it ended with Becoming we could have held on to hope that no matter what Buffy would keep fighting. But I don't think the story was ever about Buffy fighting in order to reach the end. It's about Buffy always fighting, and I honestly think her dying at the end of the show would have been a way too easy way out.

For me, Becoming would only have worked if it had an epilogue where Buffy reunited with her friends instead of running away.

Oooh, could not disagree more! This is unpopular opinions so I won't argue with you. But I'll just leave this here if you're curious, since I largely agree with it: Fragments Of My Imagination: The Gift. I would *not* want The Gift to be the end of the show, for the reasons outlined here, but I can't get on board with it being the *worst* ending, since it is the culmination of the original story that Joss set out to tell.

So I guess *my* unpopular opinion for the thread is: Buffy did not commit suicide in The Gift.

I don't think Buffy was necessarily committing suicide either, it's a sacrifice, that's at least distinctly different from the connotation with suicide. I wasn't implying I didn't like The Gift. I love it. Just couldn't possibly imagine it as the end. Anyway we can agree to disagree.
 
Well, if no one else is going to say it, then I will: It kinda was suicide. It was partly about saving Dawn, but it was also a convenient escape from a world that had become too much for her.

And I disagree, which is why it is an unpopular opinion. 🙂 But I shouldn't have implied that that's what @Fool for Buffy thought. I was just responding to the idea that dying was the easy way out, and that's what made me think of my own unpopular opinion.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to say that you thought it was bad, I was just specifically responding to the idea that The Gift was not what the show was about. Because to me, it was exactly what the show was about. Buffy becoming an adult.

Wouldn't the most adult thing be to stay alive and provide for Dawn? I know the situation didn't allow for that, but the sacrifice left a bitter taste in my mouth. It felt as if Buffy was happy to get a way out of all that was difficult.
 
I think Buffy's arc at the end of season 5 is more complicated than she committed suicide and definitely more than she heroically and selflessly sacrificed herself. I think the truth is somewhere around the middle. I'm always a bit disappointed when people only see the sacrifice part of it, as if Buffy is a completely selfless and perfect human being and her being incredibly human and suffering from depression wasn't a factor at all in her arc in season 5. If it was a complete sacrifice, they wouldn't have put so much focus on her being exhausted of it all.

I love that arc but wouldn't want the show to end with The Gift (even though I feel like it was never as good after that), because I relate a lot to it but on a very depressing level. Thankfully, there's Grave (as flawed as it is) to counter the overall pessimistic feeling of it.
