Agree or Disagree?

If it were between the two actors, Sarah would be meat on Summer's platter, I have no doubt. As Whedonverse characters, however, I would have to agree that Buffy would beat River. Eventually. Barely. And she wouldn't be walking around bragging about it for a few days, either. I don't know exactly how Reavers would stack up against ubervamps, but River beat a whole army of the buggers single handed. She oughta give a Slayer a run for her money.

I agree, WA. If it were the actors, Summer would whip Sarah's butt. LOL But as for the characters themselves? It'd be a hell of a fight, but I think Buffy would eventually win.

I don't know about the actors, but for the characters, I think Buffy would win eventually. River's an incredible fighter, don't get me wrong, but she fights with this kind of precision that I think Buffy would figure out a way to beat one way or another. Also, Buffy has mystical stuff on her side. She might be able to use that.

I am actually going to say that I think River could maybe win just maybe. I think actor wise Summer has it all the way.

Ooh it would be close... but would River has the psychic stuff on her side? I'm not exactly sure how that works. Reavers were originally men so I doubt they are as strong as some of the demons Buffy has had to face... So I duno who would win. I'd love to see it thought!

Buffy has super strength. While River is a beautiful and skilled fighter, she only has human strength. Buffy's combat experience and super strength make her the favorite to win, I think. That said, if River could neutralize Buffy's strength and employ her psychic skill as a tactical advantage then she could win. Although I would put her as the underdog, I'd still put my money on River.

Granted, Reavers are human, but they are portrayed as humans in an almost constant, total state of rage and adrenalin overload, which would give an individual near superhuman strength (something like the way that a 100 pound mother can lift an overturned car off of her injured child, only on a permanent basis, not just a temporary surge) Individually, they might not be as powerful as the average demon, but just imagine having to fight, not one, but a dozen or more such screaming maniacs all crowded into a relatively small room. That's what River did in "Serenity," and she managed to beat them all without apparently suffering any disabling injuries herself. I seriously doubt that any Slayer, even one as skilled and experienced as Buffy, could have done any better, nor can I imagine any one or several demons who would present any more formidable a group of opponents.

It would truly be one helluva fight to see.

I have to say I think River would win, eventually. That is presuming its is just them and not their teams also. But even then I would put my money on River's team as they like guns 😀

Some friends and I were actually debating this the other day XD My opinion: It has the potential to be a very close battle. (Also, spoilers for Serenity! Mind you, this thread in itself is kind of a spoiler for Serenity...)

For Buffy:
Buffy has superhuman strength, I'd say she could deal out more damage per blow than River, as I don't believe its ever stated that River has unnatural strength.

Although I wouldn't say her fighting style is as polished and natural as River's seems to be, after several years of using her fighting skills on a nightly basis, she has to have picked up a lot of tricks.

Slayers are hardy creatures, it would take a lot to take Buffy down and keep her there.

She has experience in battling a wide variety of enemies- demons, vampires, etc, whereas River's experience, we can safely assume (due to the nature of the Firefly universe) has only fought normal humans and Reavers (which I agree, being fuelled by rage and adrenaline, will be tough), though I suppose there is a possibility that she fought against other Alliance "subjects" for practice/testing/display before she was rescued by Simon. Thus, Buffy has experience with facing a lot of different styles. HOWEVER, it could be argued that, for all her hardiness and strength, she's still a human, with the same basic weak points of humans and Reavers, thus making this point somewhat more immaterial.

For River:

We know she's taken on a room of Reavers, killed them all, and still been standing by the end of it. We've seen Buffy almost killed by single vampires several times throughout the series run. Saying that, we see Buffy in vastly more fights than we do River, we'd really need to see much more of River before judging how easy it is to take her down (though going by rules of TV, I imagine that would vary depending on the needs of the episode).

She has an unnatural aim- in both her major battles in Serenity, and in the gun fight in War Stories, if River aims to hit something, with bullet, fists or knife, she generally does. I suspect this would include Buffy- and if River hit her enough times, or in the right places, or with the right weapon, then that could end the fight for her.

If we're talking River post-Serenity, her mental state appears to be a good deal more stable, and she no longer needs to be triggered by external forces, she uses her abilities of her own choice.

Lastly, and this is the big one: River is a psychic (or a reader, call it what you like). She can read people's thoughts, she can sense what they're about to do, and what's about to happen- see the beginning of Serenity for just one example. In a fight, this would be a huge boon- she could read what her opponent is about to do, where s/he is going to move, what weapons and tricks they have up their sleeve. I'm assuming this is part of the reason River fights so effortlessly, in many cases, not even having to look at her targets.

Overall:
I'm going to say River, the ability to read minds should theoretically win it for her, in my mind. Buffy can hit harder, and could take River down in fewer moves, so River would need to avoid Buffy's attacks- but if River can read minds, she should be able to predict most of Buffy's moves, and avoid them. She will need less recovery time, as she's proven she doesn't need to see her enemy to successfully land a blow, if she can sense where Buffy is, she won't need to be looking at her (for example, if she executes an attack that ends with her facing away from Buffy, she won't have to spend time turning and "locking on" to her target again). Buffy is very strong and fast, I imagine she would manage to do some damage of her own, or at least keep River on the defensive for a while, though. But yeah, my vote goes to River- assuming, however, that this is post-Serenity, and thus River has more control over her abilities... otherwise, if Buffy doesn't say "Miranda", I'd definitely say Buffy.

River Tam would own Buffy.

Remember when she took out like 6 soldiers with a gun by just remembering where their were? Or when she killed like 15 Reavers by herself? I love Buffy...but it wouldn't even be close.

Can I suggest they fight and fight until passion gets the better of them and they fall into each other's arms a la Smashed? Cuz that would be hot. (sw)

Seriously, though, it'd be a hell of a fight, but if it were their first fight, I think River would win. I think Buffy'd come out on top in the subsequent fights, though.

I think River would totally Kick Buffy's ass. I mean did you not see her kick ass in that Bar?! All those men?!!?!?!

Sarah Michelle Geller is a much better actress than Summer Glau. Summer is a genre actress while Sarah can cross genres. Sarah is a much better actress.. her movies may not be, but that is her agent's fault. Summer's characters all seem, if not the same, VERY familiar, the same as Alan Tudyk.

As far as character.. Buffy would win. Age and experience, plus Buffy is much more spry.

Hear, hear! Sarah's acting WIPES THE FLOOR with Summer's!
Depens on how the fight is arranged. Huge difference if River can use a gun, or more, or not. Will Buffy be all by herself (not only fighting but when planning a possible strategy)? Will they be in a ring etc. Can't complain much about the result of the poll. I'd hope for River though.

River's fighting style would definitely be something totally new to Buffy, and it would take her a while to adapt to it. That's why I think that the match would be so close. So far, everyone and every THING that Buffy had ever fought were more or less street fighters and common brawlers. Powerful and effective, certainly, but all quite similar in technique and application (also, it's the easiest way for stunt people to fight while wearing bulky prosthetics and heavy makeup) River's more classic style of fighting is something that she has never encountered, and would no doubt catch her by surprise in the critical first few minutes. Plus, Buffy might just make the same near fatal mistake that she's made on several occasions before, primarily when she first fought Spike, Glory, and Caleb, of underestimating an opponent who doesn't LOOK that imposing. (You'd think that after "School Hard," she would have learned.)

I think it would be a close fight between the characters. Buffy has so much fighting experience, but River's style is so effortless and elegant. It's difficult to find an outcome that works with all of the things both fighters bring to the table. I do feel like Buffy would be victorious in the end though. River is fantastic, but there is a strength so formidable in Buffy, the idea of her losing to anyone in a straight-out melee is almost laughable.
As far as acting abilities, I'm gonna have to disagree with the general consensus that Summer beats Sarah. I can't believe anyone would think to compare the two, much less come up on the side of Summer. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion(which is a great thing really!) I must admit I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here. I mean, are you serious? If a mask-like expression, a lot of arm-waving, and grabbing at yourself compares and surpasses the deeply and beautifully displayed emotions that Sarah can give, I must be taking said crazy pills!
No offense intended guys! You know I love everyone(so far) here.

River at the end of the day is just an extremely good human, limited by her humaness... whereas buffy has the supernatural on her side, extra strength etc, so I'd say buffy would most likely win, but wouldn't be overly suprised if river did somehow best her.
