Buffy Without the Scoobies

This sprang out of THIS thread.

We know that, in 'The Wish', Buffy is a very hard, closed off, emotionless person. Living for her job and nothing more. She doesn't have friends and she isn't close to her Watcher the way she is with Giles in the 'real' world. Pretty much what all imagine a typical Slayer to be, if Buffy is atypical.

But what would she be like if she'd been in Sunnydale, and just never made friends with Willow and Xander? Would she still have turned into that cold, callous person under Giles' care? Or would she have been the Buffy we all know and love, just without her wing men?
 
I think buffy's friends truly are the wind beneath her wings.... I don't think it's an accident that her under willow's spell self chose that song to be her and spike's wedding dance song.

I do think buffy survives and thrives because of who she is, AND because of her friends that support her.

She would not be where she is without them.

I think she would have been worse, or dead not long after getting there.

Buffy was that hardened by what she'd experienced while in Cleveland which is (hinted at) a smaller hellmouth (I think it's been ages since I've seen The Wish). Being in Sunnydale would have been worse for her.

I think without friends to make her think twice she'd run into battle, kinda like what she was doing in season 7 when she wasn't taking anything her friends were saying on board, or like she did in the Wish, and she would have been killed.

I think it is mentioned countless time in the serie that what makes Buffy's strength is her friends. The reason Buffy didn't die (or I should saw didn't stay dead) is also because of her friends. Buffy by far surpassed a slayer's life spam and that can't be a coincidence. We can see in s4 Primeval how important it is for the scoobies to be together in order to have real power, even if it isn't always as obvious physically.

Now, in s7, do I think Buffy still needs her friend? probably not as much, if at all. It is fairly evident that they have drifted apart but by that time Buffy has forged who she is. She is ready to go without a support system when Giles leave or when Willow becomes bad.

In earlier season, we can clearly see that Buffy doesn't want to be the slayer, she isn't ready to fight all the demons on her own. I do believe that if she didn't have the gang in high school as moral support, she would have become very bitter about her job. I think the isolation of Buffy would have been her downfall, no 16yo girl wants to have to go through high school without friends, or even worst, with friends that know nothing about your life and probably would keep getting killed. Willow's and Xander's survival around the slayer were primarily due to their knowledge of what was happening. I'm sure if Buffy had never met them and tried to make friends without telling them she was the slayer, they would have eventually been killed and one can only take so many death before becoming like someone we see in "the Wish".
 
Obviously, without her friends, Xander specifically, she wouldn't have made it to Season 2. The Master would have killed her, and without Xander there to apply CPR, Buffy would have stayed dead in that puddle. The next season would have been called "Kendra, The Vampire Slayer." But, beyond that, Buffy's friends and lovers were there for her, allowing her do her job better and live her life more happily than she would ever have been able to do if she had been all alone.

I agree. Even though the slayer was not meant to have friends who knew of her duties, I do think it helped her and gave her more strength for battle.

Spike: "A slayer with family and friends. That sure as hell wasn't in the brochure."
 
I definitely think Buffy would be a lot like we saw her in "The Wish" without the support of her friends and Giles. I don't know if she'd be AS hard as we saw her in "The Wish", but I think she'd certainly be headed that way.
Of course we have no idea if things would still happen exactly as they did for her in that alternate reality, but if it did, I can definitely see Buffy going down a cold, dark, lonely path and becoming a very closed-off, cold-hearted person because of it.
