Why didnt a new slayer rise when she died?
It just seems odd how when Kendra was killed, Faith came along.
But when Buffy died, nothing happed.

Was it because Buffy had already died?
like it was like a gun with only one bullet?

Excuse the metaphor.

because buffy had already died and brought kendra, she had passed the slayerline from herself to kendra. as far as the slayerline was concerned buffy was still seen as dead to them.

Hey! I know it gets confusing. The Slayer Line goes like this:

Buffy >>> Kendra >>> Faith

So. When Buffy died the first time, the Slayer line was passed through her. She was no longer the Slayer, Faith was. But then of course, Faith went wacko and Buffy had to keep doing the Slayer thing. When Buffy died the second time another Slayer wasn't called because Faith was still alove, hence the active Slayer.

🙂

To be honest, i never understood what was so confusing about it. I got it the first time i ever watched the show, and i was 11. It made sense that in one death Buffy passed on the line, if its passed to kendra, how could it be still something that could be passed on from her again? she was just an anomaly as far as slayers go. I always thought they made that pretty clear.

Don't mean to sound crass or anything, i just really never got the confusion.

I think this is probably the #1 most frequently asked question about the show on every single board I've been to...they should put the answer on the side of buses or something...

It is in the staked oft-asked questions thread in the Inside Out forum. The bus idea is good too though.
Well, it must be confusing to quite a few people then. Although I'd wager that the question I see the most is not this one but the ever-boring and endless debate of

DID BUFFY LOVE SPIKE?

I mean, I'm a Spuffy, but even I get sick of seeing this all over every board, group, fan club and forum.

In comparision, I'm down for the Slayer Line question anytime.

"Interesting Turn..."

HAHA 🙂

Um, i actually thought she did love him.
Like there was this part of her that wanted to tell him, but somehow couldn't let go of Angel.
Haha, actually, i'm no longer sure.

No don't get me wrong it's an absolutely fine question...just over discussed in my opinion 🙂

like i said Blayke, i wasnt trying to be mean, sorry if it came off that way! i guess its like, i always understood it, and never had problem with the idea, but there are plenty of people who argue other theories as well.

And I still say another Slayer was called, we just never saw her as she's in Timbuktu, or Novosibirsk, or wherever, and the CoW kept her secret from Giles & Buffy.

(yeah, feel free to bad karma me again, Edmund. 😛 )

After all, Buffy clearly still had the Slayer Energy after coming back from her first death, or she would have returned as a mere Potential. So it has always been and still remains silly to me to assume she had the energy but not the line. I've not yet heard anything (except Word Of Joss *cough*) to make me assume otherwise than that there were two Slayer lines after PG, three lines after The GIft (or, more precisely, after Bargaining), and either LOTS or NONE AT ALL (remains to be cleared up in S8) after Chosen, and except for a few months over a certain summer, all of that time one of these lines was running through Buffy.

Again, this is one of the most confusing issues in Buffy Lore because even Joss didn't seem to consistently know what the deal was. Even in the series finale there was mention made that a new Slayer WOULD be activated if Buffy died... but then Joss himself has also said that only THE Slayer could pass on the line, and THE Slayer is now Faith.

And post-"Chosen" we don't know whether or not any new Potentials are being created, so we don't know if there will be any more Slayers after the current crop are all dead...at least until Fray.

Joss has been known to get caught in his own continuity errors before...like having the First Evil take the form of Warren Mears in season 7 but then having him be still alive in season 8.

I agree. I was never confused by it either.

It does irk me a little, though, because part of me feels like Buffy should have lost her powers after she died. The "Slayer line" was passed to Faith, but none of her powers left?

Just like part of me feels like both Dawn and Buffy should have had to jump into the portal at the end, so that all the blood was gone, but that's for a different thread. 😉

(S7 spoilers)

I honestly believe this wasn't a continuity mistake (well...probably...) but more of something Buffy threw in many of her speeches for effect. These speeches were pre-Faith's arrival, right? So instead of the confusion about explaining about Buffy's first death, Faith being activated, her rogue Slayer-gone-bad deal, and all of that, Buffy just sort of..simplified it. What would have been more effective in a go-get-'em speech? Saying, "If I die.." or "If this girl you've never met dies.." I mean, I really just took that to be dramatized and exaggerated purposely.

That has basically been mine take on it also.
I see it as an easy and plausable explanation. Just because Buffy says something doesn't mean its actually is so.
Perhaps she might even believe it herself. Even though that seems less likely.
