I do think that in Sci-Fi movies or television shows (for instance Buffy) that non-human beings are measured up to human standards. And for those that are good natured, they want to be up to the level of a human.

Although a human can be just as bad if not worse than a demon or animal, its typically known that a human can do great good, but other things can too.

Some characters in these movies/books/shows/plays strive to be human because we compare them to ourselves. This is because we see most of their acts to be uncivilized or improper. Should we judge others by our standards no? And although our society has came a great deal in the past 50 years with equality over race, gender and ect., I think most of humanity would probably be extremely judgemental towards, say an alien, because thats just our standards. We have laws and most of us abide by them, but we have no idea/understanding with what the laws or nature of other creatures are.

I hate to tell you this, but society has yet to live up to what we consider the perfect standards regarding race, gender, religion, etc. In fact, I doubt that we ever will.


You are talking about a concept that is presenting itself in Science FICTION and Fantasy stories...it's not as valid an argument as if you were arguing actual human tendencies to think ourselves superior. Those stories are made to explore places that we as humans do not have access to because they present themselves in impossible situations.

What I'm trying to point out is that writers . . . human writers use Science-Fiction and Fantasy stories to put humanity on a pedestal. Frankly, I see nothing exceptional about humans, in regard to other species. I believe that each species on this earth have their own set of flaws and virtues - regardless of how "civilized" or "intelligent" each species is.
 
You don't believe that Humanity shouldn't pat itself on the back every once in a while for the acheivements we've made to advance and better our lives? I understand that all species have flaws and virtues, but we are the only ones who recognize that.

You are trying to say that these writers are actively and knowingly portraying these characters in the way you are reading them. Sometimes they are just telling a story.

In a text based on humans that is long-standing humans are going to be seen as superior because how fun is it to watch the main icons of a text being seen as a bad thing?
 
In regards to the advancements made to our society, no civilization will ever be deemed perfect. There will always be some socio-economic barrier, corrupt politician/rep. or even something as simple as a thief.

But the things that make humans unique or even superior is a conscience. One of my favorite quotes of the moment is "A conscience does not prevent sin. It only prevents you from enjoying it." (Author Unknown).

We as humans have the ability to bad. But for the most part of humanity, we either regret these things or are haunted by our memories.

Vampires and demons are compared to humans because they don't have a conscience. They act out in a negative way and have no doubts out it, either because of their primal nature or their lack of conscience.

Honestly, I think in the Buffyverse that humanity is saw as something superior. Because I mean, look at Angel S5 & Buffy S7, we are told that humanity drove away the Old Ones. This shows that theres something extremely strong about human nature. Whether it be rationalization, love, or caring... vampires and most demons simply do not have it.
