Who is Buffy's best friend? I have heard Willow, Xander and Buffy all refer to each as "best friends". Is one relationship actually her best, best friend? It often looks to me like Willow and Xander are best friends because they've known each other longer and because the slayer job creates a barrier between Buffy and others.

So is it Xander and Buffy, Willow and Buffy or some other character that is her best friend? Giles could be her best friend but he is more of a father. Spike could also be her best friend but only at times. Maybe even Dawn since they seem very close.

I would say shes closer to Willow than Xander overall, but they all contribute to the friendship in their own way.

Do we really have to have a friendship hit parade? This is not like a song that is your favourite for a few weeks then something else displaces it from its position. I have some friends in the antique radio group, another who is a fabricator with his own machine shop who has rebuilt a Lotus Europa and a De Tomaso Pantera, another one in the automotive marketing trade and another who is a pilot with is own plane. I do not feel the need to rank them or provide any kind of preference. Similarly, Willow and Xander both had abilities Buffy could count on and some pleasure to be derived in their company. If you have a friend or you are a friend, "best" is really not an issue.

"Best friends hit parade." Well put. I don't feel that need, either.
Buffy's best friend is Willow. I imagine it will always be Willow.
It's clear even in the comics where they have a somewhat strained relationship. But they're best friends who treat each other as equals and share their troubles with each other.

If its the person that Buffy feels closest to emotionally, then that's Dawn, she's blood.

But if its the person who completely understands the slayer part of Buffy then that's Faith, they share dreams, have the same destiny, their power comes from the same thousands of years old source.

Willow, for me, it's definitely Willow. Not to say she's not very close to other people, but as far as friendship goes, I think Willow and Buffy have the strongest one.

Willow for the win then? I agree I have more than one best friend but several times they each refer to each as "best friend". I haven't called anyone my best friend in a very long time. I say things like one of my very best friends or we are best of friends so I always find it odd when Xander calls Buffy his best friend in one episode then Willow his best friend in another.

So Willow is the most popular? That's probably why she didn't like Cordelia, both wanted to be the top of the social ladder.

Willow is Buffy's best friend. She can open up to her in ways she can't do with Xander. Xander calls both Buffy and Willow best friends, perhaps because he considers both of them family. "I don't know what I'd do without you [Buffy] and Will," he tells Buffy in S6.

I'm not really fond of the term best friend. It's a bit juvenile and creates unnecessary pressure and competition. Looking at the show and into the comics it seems clear to me that Buffy, Willow and Xander are family now. They've been through so much together and they're always there for each other. They have different dynamics as pairs but I don't believe they would rank them so neither will I.

Yes, I think Willow as well. For the reasons sosa lola stated.

I think Buffy and Willow have a different kind of bond than Buffy and Xander. I don't think that's a juvenile or competitive though, I just think you have different friends for different things, and Willow is from the start a bit of a safe haven for Buffy, in a way that other characters just aren't. It's probably partly that they can relate to each other. That doesn't mean she loves anyone any less.

Because Willow doesn't generally act like a best friend 🙂

Aw, I disagree. Willow always had time to listen to Buffy's problems and complaints, usually forgetting herself. A scene that comes to mind is Living Conditions, Buffy whining about Kathy to Willow on the phone whole poor Willow listened patiently even though her roommate is far worse than Kathy.
