This isn't about whether you favor one relationship, it's about which of Buffy's boyfriends, namely Angel, Riley, and Spike, helped her most in her regular patrolling and general hellmouth guarding.

As much as I prefer Buffy with Spike always, I still feel that Angel was the most help to her simply because he was there first, and helped her acclimate herself to the hellmouth and its regular, and irregular, conditions and hazards.
 
I agree, Angel helped alot in the beginning..but Spike helped loads too in s4-s7.. I don't know I can't decide between them both.
 
Somehow, I have to say Riley.
Buffy, as the slayer, is a person who is strong and independent. She has to be. But Riley made Buffy feel like a girl again. He wasn't a superhero or anything, but a "normal" young man who took care of her in some ways Angel and Spike never could. Riley was always there. Not depending whether the sun was up or not
 
I have to say Angel. I mean, come on, the first time they met he already talked about wanting them (the vampires) all dea and the apocalypse! Spike most of the time just did something when there was money in for it. Okay, later that changed, but not enough that it could make up for Angel.
And Riley...later it looked like he was more of in the way.
 
Angel, it was one of his main roles in the show to help her patrol to the point where even Giles would ask if Angel was going to patrol with her. Spike only gave a hand patrolling with Buffy sporadically, he was never a permanaent fixture. In fact Buffy seemed to patrol more and more on her own in the latter seasons.

Riley I don't think helped too much. He had his own duties with the Initiative and when he didn't Buffy spent too much time making sure he didn't get hurt.
 
I'm going through all the seasons, to find out my answer. And I swear it's not because I love Spike more. He helped Buffy more, even without a soul, even as an enemy (Becoming). Angel helped her a lot, but only as a vampire with a soul. He could not help her then. Spike was always there for her, from season 2. I know from selfish motive, but still, he helped her, and that was the question. Same thing for season 4. Then, in season 7. If he hadn't been there for her in Touched, she would give up. That was the biggest help. And of course all those times that he saved her and been there for her...

Riley... Well aside from helping her, he did it with a lot of envy in his heart. Maybe even helped her so he could feel stonger. Sometimes he couldn't be there for her, because Buffy wouldn't let him. He wanted to help, but I suspect it was only so he could feel like he's stonger than her, not really for her. I'm not sure it's true, but that's my theory.
 
I feel like the vamps were pretty even in the amount of help that they provided in terms of demons and big bads. Spike might win out a little if you consider number of baddies fought, but a lot of that has to do with him being a regular cast member for 4 seasons instead of 3 -- and with his character being more of a scraper than an informer and never having been the big bad for a season. Because he featured prominently in later battles, he also fought baddies on a more epic scale, going up with Buffy against armies and gods instead of masters and mayors. Alternatively, Angel might win out if you consider how useful all of his creepy hints were to a fresh slayer in the early seasons, how intimate knowledge of a vampire helped Buffy to hone her skills, and how having to fight her lover made Buffy a stronger person. There's no doubt that both vamps were incredibly useful.

Riley only had a season-and-a-half in which to provide assistance of any sort, a lot of which came from the initiative, which harmed more than it helped.
 
"Not a new boyfriend, but I am seeing someone" says Buffy when she introduces her 'date' Faith. Faith blew any male out of the water as far as patroling help. She was the only one that was not a liability.
 
Well, when I first saw this post, I sort of voted for Spike out of instinct...after all, in most posts titled "Buffy's Boyfriends," you just assume it's a "who do you like her with?" kind of thing. But, when I read that it was about who helped the most, I started to reconsider. If we're talking about who helped the Scoobies saved the world the most, I went with the right choice, especially in mid to late season 5.

But, if we're talking about which boyfriend helped to change Buffy the most, it's Angel. Actually, Angelus. In fact, I think she grew more in Innocence than she did in the entirety of seasons 3 and 4...it's hard to believe it only took about a season for her to go from the carefree, reluctant Buffy we see when she first starts going out with Angel to the loner type we see in late season 2.
 
It was kind of hard voting for Angel in any kind of poll, but my fingers seemed drawn to the Angel button. Riley wasn't strong enough, he felt to jealous, and he more then once made it clear that he felt like less of a man when Buffy showed that she was stronger then him, making her less likely to really let loose.
Spike was almost to much of an annoyance to Buffy at times, when she could have been patrolling she was telling Spike to go away, that he will never go there again, blah blah blah. He has done some amazing things to help on patrol before.

However, nothing can beat Angel in the first few seasons where he gave her vital emotional support on her patrols, despite Buffy being strong and not needing help physically, I would think that Angel would give her someone to lean on while patroling. A protector of her. He helped her realise that slayer was her destiny and she couldn't back out of things. An example I'm thinking of in particular is in The Prom where Buffy and Angel chase a vampire into the sewers and Buffy is ready to forget about it, Angel is the one that tells her that they have to. Seems like a mini moment that sums up their entire relationship.

Besides, what other boyfriend has given her no other option for a date but to sit in a graveyard?
 
Angel didn't really help against the Master. He was the Big Bad in Season 2. And in season 3 he did help.

Spike was invaluable in the fight against Glory and against the First, but not against Darth Rosenberg.

So, I'd say it's almost a tie. Except that Spike died to in season 7, so in my book, he sacrificed more.
 
Spike! He helped with demon info, Dawn, big fights, stuck around when Buffy was dead, a bit of patrolling now and then, in season six (in a weird kind of way) he was her lifeboat, season seven he was her right hand man and he died for her (and saved the world).
 
Angel was just "ohh you´re in great danger" and treated Buffy like a child.

Spike was more like "let´s go kick some ass" kind of help. And later, he was the safe fluffy pillow, S6 she was almost depending on him. S7 he made her wake up again and fight. And he died in the end, big point for him.

I think all of Buffy's boyfriends helped her to a certain extent. Well, that is exept for Parker. I think Angel and Spike were able to help out with the slayage a bit more due to their vampire strengths.
 
Angel, definitely. He helped her out from the beginning, telling her about how the Master was going to open the hellmouth up. Every week, he helped her fight evil.

Spike didn't start helping Buffy out until he fell in love with her and even then, there were times when he didn't do anything at all to help her out.
 
Spike, of course. Angel needs to have a soul to love her, Spike loves her with & without, that is TRUE LOVE 🙂.

Actually, Angelus did love Buffy, he just hated the fact. It was sick and twisted, but so was Spike's love, pre-soul...Buffybot...
As always I wouldn't put it on a scoreboard. In my eyes it shouldn't be a list of deeds but appreciating how all of them attempted to contribute to her mission. Spike giving Buffy that much needed support in Touched was of inherent value as was Angel saving Buffy's life in Chosen etc.

I think it's a little unfair to say that it's ok that Spike may have alterior motives but it's bad that Riley did. I think he genuinely tried to help Buffy, despite his insecurities. I don't think it was just about proving a point.
 
In my honest opinion, I think they all hurt her more than helped, emotionally speaking. I voted for Angel in more of a technical sense. Then again, I'm also a bit biased towards the first 3 seasons...
