hi,

im wondering if it was known to the fans that the show didnt end with buffys dead in the season final.

i read somewere that the show switched so another broadcaster after season 5 and that the network which aired season 1-5 advertised the season final as the series final, is that correct?

so did you already knew that the show will go on? or was it not decided yet at that time?

i dont think josh could have been that cruel to the fans, but on the other hand he killed off major and beloved caracters on other shows and the later seasons too😀

if there is already a thread about this topic i apologize, i tried to use the searchengine but i didnt found anything.

At the time season 5 was the series finale, no one knew it would get picked up by UPN. So i'm going to assume hundreds of fans went into a depression lol. It wasn't until later that UPN said they would do a season 6 and Joss wanted to continue the character.

I did read that, in the UK episodes air after they premier in North America. So most Buffy fans in the UK had the surprise of Buffys death ruined for them because all the newspapers and internet blogs were talking about it lol

Just some stuff I read

wow, thats cruel!

im glad i didnt watched the show during its original airing, must have been horrible to think the show ended with buffys death 🙁

I think it was a good few months after 'The Gift' was shown in the States before we got it here, and I think, when the credits rolled, the announcer said 'And Buffy will return in the new year' or something like that.

Regardless of what was said, I knew there would be a sixth season, but it in no way made watching 'The Gift' any easier or took away the emotional impact of such an amazing episode.

And while I think Joss is TOTALLY the kind of person who would leave fans hanging, which he's proved many, many, MANY times, I think the ending of 'The Gift' is so beautiful and poignant that the fans who didn't know the show was coming back weren't upset to know that it wasn't coming back. It would have been such a fitting end to the character, to all the characters, and I think a lot of people thought that a show like BtVS couldn't end with anything OTHER than Buffy's death.

same here, in Germany everyone knew that there'd be a sixth season bcs it was shown months after the original US air date.
Well I only started watching last year and I knew that there was 7 seasons. So after she died I was just like, "Huh. That was weird. I wonder what they will do next season." I was still surprised on how Buffy came back.

yes, i knew that she will die in season 5 and that there are 7 seasons in total too, but i did watched it only a year ago, just like you did.

i try to imagine how i would have felt after watching "the gift" without knowing that she will be back, but i dont know if i would have liked it or not.

the gift wasnt a bad season final, but it wasnt a happy ending in my opinion. i prefer the "ending with status quo" of season 7 😀 even spike got resurrected, and anya wasnt one of ma favs anyway😛

Yeah I thought it was the end when it aired...I didn't hear till months later that it got picked up by UPN and then all the ads starting coming out with Buffy lives again or something like that lol

Yeah, I knew she was coming back so it was kind of anti-climatic. Also, Sky One completely spoiled her death in the promos for The Gift by showing the headstone scene in the ads. FAIL.

how did you know it was coming back?
I had stopped watching Buffy in season 5 and heard she died from someone. One day I was watching Sky One and a Buffy returns ad came on TV. I was all "OH MY GOD :O! MUST WATCH!". So I did haha 😀

BuffyHead agrees: how did you know it was coming back?

I read it in the paper. Before The Gift had aired in Ireland, it was already announced that there would be a S6. 🙂

As I recall, it was pretty well a sure thing that there would be a Season 6, and that Buffy would definitely be back, which kind of ruined the drama of the last moment, pretty much the way that Spike dying at the end of Season 7 didn't have nearly the same impact as it would have if it hadn't been common knowledge that he would become a regular on "Angel" the next year.

I saw the show first-run and distinctly remember that we already knew that Buffy had gotten picked up by UPN for Season 6... It was announced on the original Bronze board (the official one through the WB site), so I already knew she was going to come back somehow.
It still didn't make "The Gift" any less traumatic and sad for me though, as a fan!

original PB karma!
well, i guess i wasnt as in tune to looking things up as i am now, so i guess i didnt realize it had been picked up when season 5 happened. I was online connstantly but i guess i didnt know the message board thing like i know now.

I had known about season 6 before The Gift, but wasn't sure what was going to happen

Didn't they change networks BEFORE the end of s5? That's how they finally got the Tara/Willow kiss approved. Because the other network wouldn't allow it?

I really thought it was the end. I was really upset. I hated that being the end of the show. When I saw there was a new season, and the amazing promos (that I still remember to this day) I was estatic!

This is part of the reason I often hate the internet and fandom. It's so hard nowadays to just not know. You really have to actively avoid spoilers if you want to keep your viewing experience unspoiled. Especially when you live outside the US! But then the flipside is that it's so easy to talk to people who share your interests, and to find out so much information and trivia about the things you love. I only got Sky prior to Season 7, so that was the only one I could see reasonably close to US airings, so this point is kind of moot for me, but it's something that happens generally.

If I had the choice to dictate how I got to view Buffy in my younger years (cause I'm totally all growed up now) I'd definitely not allow myself to know that there was going to be a Season 6. It would have been horrible to be left hanging like that, but deliciously so. The first time you see a promo with no knowledge that the show you love was even coming back? So many questions springing up in your head as to how it's even possible? That's something you just don't get any more. Nowadays it's the announcement that your show's been picked up that's the exciting thing. Take Dollhouse, or Fringe. It's all about watching the ratings dwindle each week and praying Fox don't pull it. Statistics and politics.

I preferred it when all that was behind the curtain.

Yeah I knew it was coming back when it aired on SkyOne, I remember SkyOne had a spoiler hotline set up at the time, you could call it and select your show and it would give you spoilers for upcoming episodes. I remember the night the Gift Aired, I took the phone so my parents didn't know I was using it to call a crazy exspensive number for Buffy spoilers, and it had information about the musical episode, it said Buffy would be coming back, Willow would be going down a very different path and Riley would be back in the middle of the season.

LMAO! This is what I'm saying! This kind of crazy scheme wouldn't even be possible nowadays cause everyone can look up spoilers within a few clicks from Google! Won't somebody please think of the exploitative multinational corporations?!? 😛

Yup I knew. I didn't know how she was going to be revived but I knew it had been picked up for s6 so the fact that she was being revived some way was pretty much obvious 🙂
