I didn't hate it...didn't love it either.

Perhaps they could have kept the white theme but gone with a different style...who knows?

It wasn't a brilliant chalk white, I think that might have looked loud. It was more of a pearly colour. A quiet and understated symbol in its colour and its simplicity.

Yes, the sacrifice, innocence, or perhaps just the high school girl Buffy always wished she could be. More than one theme here, I think.

I thought the dress was classy and pretty on Buffy, besides, pieced with a leather jacket, amazing. Oh, and i a may be a heterosexual female, but her cleavage looked great too. The pearly white/cream mix matched nicely with her complexion, and I definitly like it better than Buffy's homecoming dress in season 3.

Simple was the point. I hate dresses that are too "involved". Simple is good. It wasnt bland and I assume it was expensive because of the material. Thats always what makes things expensive.

And red could have made it too sexy. She was a 16 year old girl. They werent going for sexy.

White is pure. That's why it was white. It shows her innocence & youth.

I liked the dress. It was plain but it still looked beautiful on her.

Haha! I was just thinking this same question when I watched a "Buffy" music video and it showed her in this dress!

I think the dress is okay but not, "OMG that's a beautiful dress!!" worthy because it was pretty simple. However, I liked how everyone loved it on the show and kept telling Buffy "nice dress." I thought that was funny.

^^ i was just reading and thinking the same thing
i remember wathcing it the first time and thinking "i'm so jealous, i want that dress so badly" but now i look and think oh dear, fashion faus pas
but it suited the time, it suited the themes of virginity/pure/sacrifice etc as has been mentioned
plus, anyone remember the tinyness of the s1 budget? it sure wasn't going to be the poofy vera wang gown of the 's3 fake out B/A wedding' style 🙂

but i still love it for it's prettiness and the bustline and the way it falls around her when she's floating face down - plus it was totally fight-friendly, no ripping necessary to allow for kicking etc

I think the dress was perfect for the situation and the episode. Just perfect. The allusions to innocence and funeral attire were definitely there and it was simple and awesome.
I thought it looked bad ass with the leather jacket and the crossbow, like some sort of modern fairy tale thingy.
It also may have been a slight throwback to the original Buffy movie, when Buffy wears the white dress to her prom, with Pike's leather jacket eventually. Not sure about it though.

a nice little tie in with the whole theme of doesn't matter where you are or how you try to cahnge - she's still the slayer
and prom night is still about kicking and fighting and saving the world in a cute dress

funnily enough i just went to a dress up party on saturday night as prophecy girl buffy with the white dress and all... really good night. i agree with all the people on the 'white represents innocence and sacrifices'... i cant imagine that episode with buffy wearing anything except white.

But the skirt on the dress is kind of different, it makes it swirl like Buffy's a princess. And it makes the whole episode special, just like an old movie. I think the episode wouldn't have been the same without it, love the dress 😛

I think it just was the style when they filmed it, it could have been Amazing when the episode was filmed, but now i think it's just outdated

i think it's a good thing it wasn't red or slinky and black...'cause that was the point!
the dress was suppsed to show that Buffy was a pure, innocent girl, who was suppsed to sacrifice herself to save the world. Sacrifices always wore white!

if this had taken place in any season other than the first, then there would have been no way Buffy could have worn a pure whilte dress and pulled it off...no pun intended, for all you dirty minds out there! Buffy in S2 onwards wasn't the same girl she was in S1. yes, she was the Slayer and was forced to grow up before her time, but the thing with The Master really made her grow up a lot more, especially during the break between S1 and S2.

Couldn't have said it better. Buffy's innocence is the focus of season one and two and the plain white dress, although certainly not glamorous was beautiful because it was such a visual representation of the situational changes and turmoil at hand.
