I agree with Lyri, Phrophecy girl signalled the end of Buffy's innoncence. Although she had already had a very hard time and had to grow up it was only in this ep that she realised that being the Slayer wasn't just her job it was who she was and I think it was the start of her grieving for a life lost. Not just her physical death in the ep but the life she had hoped to have, one she would never have. The dress was the very last shred of that dream she had, I think it was absolutely perfect.Anything else would seem wrong now.

Also, I noticed that Buffy wears a lot of white over the years, usually before she goes into a big battle or a big fight of some kind. They kept that theme up, man.

I like/liked the dress, i thought it was classy, i would have been more than happy to go to prom with a gal wearing that drees, although we didnt have proms in england back when i finished school, they are still pretty rare but they are on the rise.

I loved the dress, and like you guys said it was perfect for the occasion but I don't get how some of you can say it wasn't a pretty dress. I mean it's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but I thought it was stunning.
I've always been a less is more girl when it comes to dresses so I love simple designs in simple colors that just look well....simply pretty.
With Buffy's dress, with a first look it seems nothing special but then when you look at the design- it's just fabulous. It has multi chiffon layers and the front parts rise ever slightly allowing it to move with her and behind her and showing off her cute shoes just enough. The material is fantastic and looks marvelously delicate and the neckline is so flattering, simple and gorgeous. I just adored it.
Perhaps the only slight- yet purposeful- problem is the whole 'virgin sacrifice' look it's got going on. Haha.
Plus, it was really in then, haha. I had a similarly designed dress (Though obviously not as expensive and one-of-a-kindy) in powder blue for well, I guess it would have been the same dance Buffy was going to. Except it was called a Summer Formal so I'm not sure if it was the same....::shrugs:: either way my point is, that dress style was very in just as some of you guys have already said.

I think it was a pretty dress. I would love to see it modernized for today's fashion. To me it kinda looked to symbolize her baptism into being the slayer she was to become from the girl that ran away from her destiny. It was beautiful. Personally, I think it would be better as a strapless or something a little more elegant. But then again, it was probably high digs in 97.

I mean, she was a virgin anyway, so that all good... but it just made the good and evil contrast between her and the Master so much stronger by having her in white in the middle of all that darkness... in hindsight though, it probably made her much easier to find when she was playing her game of 'hide and seek' with the Master before he killed her.

i think the symbolism of the white dress was far more important than the style/cut of the dress itself, but the dress worked for me as well, i thought it was pretty and youthful without being too obviously 'virginal/sacrifice dress'
...but the shoes were so in at the time, I can actually remembering coveting those shoes! (am I showing my age now?)

No I wanted those shoes too. In fact I had a very similar pair but they were in black. I wore them to parties often with the whole strapped black dress look that was in at the time too. (Now am I showing MY age? Haha)

As a guy, I admittedly don't know much about fashion. However, I wasn't overly impressed by her dress, as all the other characters were.
I liked the dress. I personally would have picked a different colour but like most people have mentioned, the white was significant, it represented her innocence. I wouldn't have worn the jaket though. It just didn't go 🙂

It fit the season and the time period. Late 90s was not the best time in the fashion world. (Part of the reason I love season 1, their big hair and short short skirts make me giggle.) But, I still find it to be a gorgeous dress. I wish I had enough talent as a seamstress to recreate it because I totally would~

I wouldn't say that it was all that simple, it was chiffon-y and layered and had all the under bust detailing etc, plus i liked that there was no pattern or anything, it kept it classy 🙂

I just saw it in better resolution and in context again instead of last time I looked at it, which was in a YouTube clip. The delicate beading, the smooth, shimmery silk or whatever that was... it was pretty gorgeous. Maybe it wasn't the best for her body type at the time (and it definitely didn't go with the jacket), but when Joyce opened the closet and showed Buffy the dress, I thought it was incredibly beautiful.

I certainly would have been THRILLED to wear it at 16. It's pretty, shows enough, but not too much. I think it's great.
Plus, especially with the black coat, it looks not unlike what Buffy wears in the movie. Joss has a vision here, I think.

I don't think it's an accident that she also wears white in The Gift and Chosen. (Well, and when she takes on Adam, but that's not really a finale.)
Those three are the finales where Buffy really has to overcome and understand a lot to win. They're all the ones that are really about HER winning.
