Buffy's Friendships

I never did.
I always just assumed that Buffy tolerated Anya because of Xander and felt sorry for her after Xander but when it came down to bare bones, neither what you would class as friends.

That comment proves at the very least thats Anyas thoughts.
 
Ok but if Anay didnt care about them or think of them as friends, she'd run like she did in season 3
 
She did care for Xander but at the same time its pointed out a few times that she wouldn't last alone. Firstly D'Hoffryn wanted her dead so she needed the help of the gang(something that is pointed out) secondly there is the First. Where would she run to?
If this thing succeeds in its plan, she's dead anyway.

Having said that, I do believe she was friends with Willow. I think after her 'spat' with Willow in season 5, when they both realised they weren't a threat to each other, they became friends...or at least friendly.

I think Spike may also have addressed it when he told Anya he was her best bet to protect her, or something like that.

ANYA
Stop it! I don’t love them and I’ll kill you if you tell

Anya doesn't view herself as Buffy's friend, but Buffy views Anya as a friend, she tells her so in Him.

And the disagreement in this thread is about the perspective of Buffy. How much she cares for those around her.

I think Anya's comment is more indicative of Buffy's detachment from those around her at the time, it has nothing to do with the amount of feeling Buffy has.

Yeah I guess with any decision there are complexities to the reasoning behind it, but where's the quote saying Anya stayed in Sunnydale because of her affection, or friendship with Buffy?

Yeah. He's, uh, not head of vengeance for nothing. (gets ice tray from the freezer) Well, thank you for the generous life-saving. Now please go away. (takes ice and dishtowel into the other room, picks up a knocked-over chair) Look, I don't need anyone's help. Or, OK, clearly I do, (sits in chair) but I don't want to need anyone's help, so stop helping. (starts making an ice pack with the ice and towel)

BUFFY
I get it. After last week, you feel you need to be all renegade and broody. Taking yourself out of the loop—

ANYA
I need to figure out who I am. (puts ice pack on her leg)

Also, if Anay didnt care about everyone, why would she still hang around for a year and a half after her and Xander broke up? she wasnt in danger the whole time.

And dont forget

XANDER That doesn't mean you have to kill her.

BUFFY Don't act like this is easy for me. You know it's not.

XANDER There are other options.

BUFFY I've considered them.

XANDER When? Just now? Took you all of ten seconds to decide to kill one of your best friends?

Well why would a Demon stay at the Hellmouth?

With Anya I don't think she stayed because of possible friendships. At first it was vengeance she wanted. Lets not forget she was also at home in Sunnydale.

After Selfless then she is fully aware of the danger she is in so its quite obvious that she would stay where there is protection.

As for the 'best friends' comment, well you do have to realise its Xander that makes that comment and Buffy giving a rebuttal like 'she isn't' would have seemed rather petty as in essence this was an argument about someones life.
