If there had never been an "Angel" TV series, and if David had remained on Buffy's show, how long do you seriously think that they (Buffy and Angel, obviously) would have managed to stay together? Now, before the fighting frenzy begins, what I mean is, given the fact that no other couple managed to last throughout the entire series, do you honestly believe that Joss, diabolical, cruel monster that he is, would have made this the single relationship to go the long haul? And why?

Personally, I think that at some point well before the series finale, Angel would have been permanently dusted. In fact, he might never have been brought back from hell in Season 3. Neither Willow and Tara nor Xander and Anya managed to make it, though we all know how much they felt for each other. Giles and Jenny never really had a chance. Joss seems to take perverse pleasure in constantly proving that, to him, there is no such thing as a "happily ever after." The only thing that saved Angel from a dusty demise is that he wasn't around long enough to permanently kill.
 
I think they would break up in the middle of season 4, she would be with Riley, he would go, like it happened, but Angel would be by her side, fighting evil all the way. When Buffy returns from Heaven, Angel would be there for her, he would be the only she could trust, and they would end up together. He would probably die to save the world in the last episode. In the perfect world, Disney fairytale or my mind, he would become human in the last season and they would live happily ever after. I don't agree he would be simply killed - I think that would be boring and plain death for such an amazing and intersting character that fans love. I don't think Joss would kill him like that.

Well, I don't think Joss would have made it easy for them.

Maybe Buffy would have gotten seduced by a "normal" boy(maybe Riley). After so much death and pain she gave in and was with someone normal and ordinary, someone who couldn't hurt her and who never had (like Angel, as Angelus. Not that that was his fault, but I doubt Buffy ever got over that). I think she'd cheat, because the Angelus issue would probably be brought up again, all the character would be reminded of Angelus every time he was nerby, and Buffy would get affected, and well, try to get release somewhere else. Hey, it might not be with a normal boy at all. Enter Spike, a guys he hated and loathes and who can't hurt her emotionally the way Angel can. She'd be heartbroken after the cheating, and she and Angel would struggle to get back togheter.

I bet there would have been lots of arcs exploring the different ways their relationship could be hard and impossible. I doubt they would have had a normal relationship where they broke up because they both hated doing the dishes.

So either lots of pain (maybe a triangle drama between Riley the normal boy and Buffy, or Spike/Buffy/Angel) or Angel gets dusted. That and the fact that the show was becoming Buffy the vampire layer instead of Buffy the vampire slayer kinda makes me happy the broke up. I might not like Angel anymore, but Bangel will always have a special place in my heart, partly because their love will always be tragic and romantic, without becoming pathetic, thanks to that they never really got a chance to screw it up.

And if Angel had stayed, there would have been no room for Spike's development. If Buffy was Buffy saving her relationship and Angel, who would save Spike? Maybe if we ignored all the others characters development that would have worked, but there just wasn't enough minutes per episode. But when Angel left to save himself in LA, and Buffy got time to save Spike.

I hope you got what I meant by "saving", I'm too tired to flesh it out.
 
Joss definitely wouldn't have let it be all happiness. lol But I think they might've ended up together in the end. I'm actually quite interested in how that would have turned out. Angelus would've had to return a few times and I think that would've been interesting. We know Buffy would try to get new boyfriends, she did that even back in the beginning after she met him. It definitely makes me wonder. I'm 100% Bangel from the fluff all the way to the tragedy, so it interests me alot.
 
What would have been really interesting would have been if a reformed Faith got the spin off with Wes as her Watcher, Jonathan as resident geek, Cordelia just for fluff, and Spike as resident bad boy. And, of course, with Faith and Spike working together on an extended basis...

Yup, this exactly -- so I doubt that Buffy and Angel would've stayed together for too long. I think that Angelus might have appeared again somehow, and therefore causing a final rift and he would have been dusted.

Subsequently, enter Riley.
 
About happily ever after, I think Joss didn't gave us that, because show is not finished yet. In the end of season 7, I think he felt he could do more, and that he want to do more. BtVS was his baby, his masterpiece, biggest I dare to say, and once, maybe few years from now, maybe long 20 years from now, when he feels that the show is over, he will give, not us, he will give Buffy, her happy ending. I don't know is it going to be with Angel, Spike or someone else. But I know someone is going to end up very sad if that day ever comes.

I think he would have been killed off in Season 5, maybe even in "The Gift." That would have been epic. Maybe he would have died attempting to prevent her from jumping, or who knows, maybe he would have jumped for her?

I can't believe based on what we've seen that Joss would ever allow a couple to be happy for longer then a couple seasons. Not even Bangel. Realistically, how would Angel have fit in when Buff was in college? Not very well, I'd imagine.

That said, I'm so glad Joss gave Angel his own show.

I agree this is definitely a possibility, him never coming back from Hell, that is. I think I would have preferred that, if he had to be killed off.
