Buffy's Homecoming Party in "Dead Man's Party"

Did anybody else find it totally inappropriate? I mean Joyce/Buffy wanted a QUIET get together with just the Scooby Gang. Not the entire high school and the Bronze added to it.

Like seriously
 
It was a horrible idea. I think it showed how detached and unaware Joyce and co. were about Buffy's real feelings.

I think in their minds it would force their relationships to return to what they were before without having to actually sit down and talk about and/or acknowledge what happened.
 
It was definitely inappropriate and I found it appalling that not one person stepped up and said "Hold on, let's make sure this is what Buffy herself wants first." and what about asking Joyce's permission? Who the hell just decides to throw a gigantic party at someone else's house without asking? LOL But that's TV for you.

The very first time I watched this episode I viewed it all from Buffy's perspective and felt like everyone was acting like Jerks and couldn't respect Buffy's space. On the second viewing though I looked at it from the other Scooby's perspectives and I sympathized with them a bit more. Yes the party is quite over the top, but they've all grown and become more independent without Buffy's presence. They've got their own lives and partners so they're no longer revolving around Buffy hanging tentatively on her word. Its understandable they're upset she's looking to run off again since they just wanted to throw a big party to show how much she means to them. I also felt like Buffy could've tried a little harder to try to communicate with her friends instead of trying to run off again.

Honestly, you COULD say they acted inappropriate and that would be kind of true but I didn't see it that way.

Buffy left town without saying a darn thing. Not 'see ya later', not 'I'll be back', not even 'goodbye'. She just left.

And they were going to have a nice, small get together actually. But, and this is my opinion, I feel that it grew to such extremes because the Scoobies [and Giles, maybe] felt that that would be better than having awkward conversation at the dinner table [not to mention having the elephant in the room: Buffy just upping and left].

That's how I seen it as, anyway. That way, they didn't have to pretend that everything was fine and dandy [even though Buffy and Willow and everybody else DID have a big blowout in the end].

I've always thought that the party was inappropriate because it was a way of saying "see we care" while avoiding what was really going on. In terms of their big fight, I see both sides of it. No one got out of that clean, each one of them could've made better decisions.

But throwing a huge party like they did was pretending everything was fine and dandy. They just avoided talking about the big issue in a different, more insensitive (in my opinion) way.
 
I got the distinct feeling that about 90% of the people who were there weren't actually invited, they just showed up for the party, and it all got out of hand too quickly to do very much. I doubt that Xander or Willow had any intention of having that kind of thing happen, and as for Joyce, she probably just thought that all of those people actually were Buffy's friends.
