Just watching over the first and second season of Buffy, it got me wondering about a few things. Like how Buffy is out very late almost every night killing the undead. Does Joyce know about this? Surely she would notice Buffy's absence every night. I know that she does sneak out from her bedroom window, but it still doesn't seem possible that Joyce wouldn't find out about this second life of Buffy.
And also, how does Buffy cope at school if shes fighting every night? Doesn't she get tired? lol.
Anyway that's my thoughts 😛 Anyone else agree?

With Joyce, it's a weird mixture of discipline and denial. By this point she will do all she can to make herself believe that things will be better for Buffy in Sunnydale, so instead of actually checking she's in her room, she'd be likely to just convince herself that she is. It's only when the situation is absolutely forced upon her, and she doesn't have a choice but to address it that she tries to discipline. And overcompensates dramatically.

It's little wonder though, what she's dealt with regarding Buffy.

I'm guessing Buffy used the old stuffing the bed with pillows so it looks like you're in bed trick. Works every time 😛

Parents can be incredibly naive when it comes to teenagers. My Mom was ignorant of my dating life until I was at least 20 despite the fact I'd been dating since I was 15. She was also fully convinced for many years that she had been a much wilder teen that I. To be honest, for my own safety and her sanity, I've never corrected her on this belief. She never caught me shoving my then boyfriend out my bedroom window or heard me sneak in a little-too-late at night from a party. Yet miraculously, she knew when I'd had friends over that I shouldn't have, she knew when I was hiding something I'd bought, or an outfit I was planning to wear, she even found a valentine's card from my boyfriend once...but for some reason presumed it was an average Valentine and not any sign that I was actually dating someone.

So put all that in a Buffy context and you have a Mother who no matter what happens remains blissfully oblivious of her daughter being a Vampire Slayer.

As for is Buffy not tired at school- I think I read somewhere, in an interview or in one of the novels, that a Slayer could run on minimal sleep so she could do her job all the better and all the more often. Or in Buffy's case- allow her to graduate.

Your posting in this thread about Joyce's state of mind hurts my head.
Agreeing with Joyce, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that The Slayer can function on less sleep than a normal human can. When Buffy says she's "tired" I think she's referring more to mental exhaustion then anything.

Most teenagers don't get enough sleep.
If Buffy's out from about 9 PM to 1 AM, that gives her ample slaying time, and she can still be in bed by the time a lot of teenagers get to bed.

Joyce...well, I think she's kind of dense when it comes to her daughter.

perhaps it is natural that slayers can sneak out without anybody notices it and don't need as much sleep as we normal people (without looking tired the next day when you had no sleep). If it is like this I also want to be a salyer^^

Like what most people have said I think Joyce just put herself in denial and chose to ignore that Buffy's problems from Hemery (sp?) in LA were still happening in Sunnydale. She obviously convinced herself Buffy was doing better and such when she wasn't she was still slaying.

In the last episode of season 2 Buffy points out to her mum that everything has been weird for a while. Especially when she points out to her mum about how much blood gets on her clothing and Joyce has never said anything about it, shes ignoring it all hoping it will all go away.

just when buffy went out she said she was studdying at willows till late, or at the bronze or somthing and when she was wasn't when her Mom went to bed snuck out. Possibly Joyce just didn't want to think of buffy doing that kinda stuff. Or really just didn't catch on.

Well my answer would be that Buffy simply lied about what she was doing. That's what I mostly do when I wanna go somewhere or do something but I don't want a million questions asked by my parents. I just say I'm going to a friends house. No details really given. Not that I do anything bad! My parents are just really weird and expect me to be anti-social.

And, along with what everyone else has already said, Joyce definitely would turn the other cheek when it cam to Buffy.

Although, I was recently watching "Welcome to the Hellmouth" and Buffy tells Joyce she's going out The Bronze, and Joyce was ok with it. That always struck me kind of oddly about Sunnydale. They had a bunch of underage kids going to a club night after night. These are a bunch of high school kids, many of which don't have jobs. How could they afford to pay the cover charge every single night? My friends and I were never allowed to go to clubs at 16. Heck, 16 year olds weren't allowed into clubs!

As far as the sneaking out the window part...It's totally possible that Joyce would not find out about it. I did it almost every night from jr high on...and I too was on the upper floor. No problemo...

I'm sure Joyce caught quite a few glimpses of Buffy's second life. Like Buffy said in Becoming, pt. 2, "How many times have you washed blood out of my clothing, and you still haven't figured it out?" But, as they've mentioned quite a few times in the show, people in the 'verse tend to be very good at forgetting and denying things, and Joyce seems to be the queen of denial land. She just makes assumptions and forgets about it, and isn't even really able to face the truth when Buffy goes ahead and tells it to her. Besides, Buffy doesn't have anything particularly incriminating like a ladder near her window and she doesn't use the front door to come inside, and Joyce seldom if ever checks on her at night (maybe one of those 10,000 parenting books said something about respecting her privacy.)

As far as the whole sleeping thing goes, I always figured Slayers just didn't need as much sleep as regular people.
