Has anyone else noticed something a little wrong with Buffy's finances in 'Flooded'. From a writing point of view I get why they did it but it just makes no sense. Willow and Tara are staying rent free in this house telling Buffy she's broke.

As their telling her how this house is just sucking money 'as it is' I felt like slapping them and telling them to get up off their lazy asses and chip in. Buffy's gone through hell (literally from their point of view) and now their telling her she needs to get a job, just annoyed me was all. Anyone else?

I agree... Its their fault not Buffys, i mean she has been dead!
Yeah, I never could understand how Willow and Tara could continue to live there without contributing a cent to the household expenses. Plus, how could they have possibly gone through all of Joyce's combined savings and insurance money, not to mention whatever child support Dawn must be getting from her absentee father in so short a time. For that matter, how could they have gotten access to that money in the first place? Banks and insurance companies tend to be a bit squeamish about giving money to the wrong people, which would include all of the Scoobies and Giles, and even Dawn, since she was a minor.

Willow and tara would have been contributing but its not just rent, teh amount of times the hosue got smashed up from demon attacks and on top of that there is food, gas and electric and so many more bills to pay. Willow and tara also went to college which would have meant they would only have limited funds themselves. Living is soooooo expensive and i can understand that willow and tara could have got jobs too but there is more to take into account then the rent. plus in one of the episodes its mentioned that hospital bills and funeral costs are also eating away at the funds, so there is more than just living costs!

Didn't they say the hospital bills sucked all the money?

I also believe that Willow and Tara are helping with the money, not to mention washing dishes and taking care of Dawn. I think Buffy should have sold the house and lived in a small apartment with Dawn. Willow and Tara could go back to the dorms.

I think they were chipping in though. I seriously doubt that Willow and Tara lived with Dawn in that house and only drained Joyce's funds. Who's to say they weren't contributing everything they could?

if that were the case then all the insurance money (which they confirm covered at least part of the costs), combined with Willow/Tara/Dawn/Spike's money, plus the savings... im sorry but a house is not THAT expensive to run.

Willow and Tara alone should be enough to cover operating costs (i think the house was even paid off at this point wasn't it? Thats why Buffy wanted a loan taking equity out of the paid off house... "for some reason houses in sunnydale have never been competitive"). Dawn should at least have a part time job like most teenagers.. but we know her as the winey self obsessed one so ill let that fly. As for the others, no excuse in my opinion.

It just didnt sit right for Buffy to be the sole wage earner in this house. Which is why when they all kick her out in S7 i really just felt like pulling an Uzi out on these so called friends. Just really out of character imo.

I guess their was a very good chance we just didnt see it... but it doesnt really explain the conversation where they were asking Buffy what she was going to do... leading to the whole D.Meat palace crap. It should have been a conversation between them about what THEY were going to do about it... together. If you watch the episode, its clear that the strain is all on buffy which results in some really crap times for the next 6 or so episodes.

They could've used the BuffyBot for that. Other than that, maybe Buffy already accessed the money earlier and put it onto an account somebody else, Giles would seem a reasonable choice, could also access.
And even if that wasn't the case, I'm sure Willow and Tara could've mojoed their way to the money somehow.

Something we're all forgetting here, when we talk about Tara & Dawn & Willow's lazy asses is that they were grieving and trying to keep appearances up at the same time. How could they get jobs when they have that to think about? Plus trying to find away to resurrect Buffy. Also, re-building the Buffybot got to cost a lot.

Im not too concerned with what they did prior to Buffy's return, but now that you bring it up... it further identifies the irresponsibility of Willow and Tara...

Willow and Tara were living in this house, with no jobs (presumably) and let the finances go to hell!! They save Buffy and let her know that shes broke..."well gee thanks guys!" Prior to Buffy coming back it was their responsibility to take care of things, including sell the house if need be; not let things get so bad that Buffy returns to take care of a household that is completely broke.

I stand by my assertion that Willow and Tara were irresponsible and lazy and that Buffy was left to pick up the pieces.

Well after Joyce died, Buffy paid for litterly everything (funeral, food, utilities, etc..) with what Joyce had left, so they would have ended up in that situation even if Buffy didnt die. Though I wonder what they did with Joyces art store that she had?? I mean that was Joyces main source of income and the child support I imagine her getting from Hank. That should have helped them a tiny bit.

But I was surprised that they never had Willow, Tara, and Dawn get a job during S6 and 7. I imagine Xander, Giles, and even Anya helping out with the money issues to a certain degree.

And Tara was able to afford college and everything that came with it plus clothing so she may have had some inheritance from her mother when she died, so she could have been using that to help out.

The odd thing I always thought of was, why did Xander and Anya and even Buffy eventually have jobs, yet Willow and Tara never worked? Yes, they were students, but never once was a job mentioned which isn't very realistic. Unless the Rosenbergs were tossing Willow money or something.

Also, Buffy should have accepted Spike's offer to "get money." I know why she didn't, but she should have!!!

exactly! Season 8 disproves any sense of moral objection as far as obtaining funds

Maybe Dawn didn't want them to sell the hpuse. I mean come one, she slept in the same bed as the Buffybot, she wasn't emotionally ready to move from her dead mom's and sister's house. Besides, maybe they wanted to leave the descision up to Buffy.

It's not like they have time for work and houseselling when they're trying to save Buffy from what they thought was hell.

fair enough... but their actions in 'flooded' ..."Buffy your broke, what you gonna do about it?" ...anyone else see the major problem with that?

Nope, but a minor problem :) They could get part time jobs.

Im guessing Willows parents gave her money since she had to get it somewhere to buy her clothes and eat.

Agreed. Just because Tara and Willow are in college doesn't mean they can't geet a job and pitch in for the mortgage!!! And Andrew too...and hey, theoritically Spike could have gotten a job too...

Also, if Willow's sucha good wicca - shouldn't she just be able to materialize money, right?

Do you remember the spell about excreting gold coins...not so much fun.
Basically they got into financial crisis, because i bet they tried to handle it themselves instead of using Anya 😛 Hey, someone had to say that 😉

Ok, about the situation -- Willow and Tara did not have jobs as far as i know. There never been any indication to suggest otherwise I believe. Repairs actually make a good reasoning especially after the frequent damages I bet insurance companies would not touch the house with 10 meter pole. That is until you consider when did it get thrashed? Offhead I can come up with only 1 visit from Glory in S5 and Faith in S4.

I do not know what medical expenses would be and how insurances handle such cases so i am rather clueless in that part.

I would think, if Tara and Willow were chipping in, it would have been mentioned. And Buffy wouldn't have said that her money had been "frittered away on luxuries like food and clothing." Also, part of the point of this season was that the Scoobies were split up; freeloading always drives a wedge into friendships.

Exactly, the major house thrashings from my recollect came after Joyce's death, with the exception of Dead Mans Party

This may seem like a very minor issue to some people but I think that the doom and gloom that surrounded S6 was entirely central around this subject. S6 was about entering the real world right? It was about all the responsibilities that the real world has to offer which is why its so depressing, well all of this stems from Buffy being so isolated and burdened with what should have been a shared problem (finances) and she broke down.

This continues well into the seventh season when everyone rejects her and tells her to leave her own house (even Dawn and Willow)... The theme here is that the Slayer is always alone. My point is that this burden should have been shared and Buffy was the leader and the general, she should never have been the slave working at Double meat crappy palace. This, i believe, is a lack of responsibility on Willow and Tara's part, and to a lesser degree Spike, Dawn, and Anya.
