Buffy's money gone dry.... why??

Also, if Willow's sucha good wicca - shouldn't she just be able to materialize money, right?

Tara would have never allowed that and Willow wasnt that greedy with magic.

But I dont believe that Tara and Willow of all people would use Joyces money for themselves espically since they could affored all of their own stuff before moving into casa Summers. The money strictly went to providing for Dawn and paying the bills.

Did we ever learn what happened to Joyce's gallery? I don't remember any character mentioning that it had been sold, and Buffy had dropped out of school by the time Joyce died, so she could have taken it over (on a strictly managerial level, with employees who actually knew about art). Then Willow and Tara could either have sold it or run it for her, which would have been a better idea, since they were planning to resurrect her all summer. It would have made a lot more sense to work with an existing revenue stream that guaranteed employment than to go, "Okay, so you're back from hell now... go out and get a job that doesn't require a college education! Good luck finding something that can support all of us!"

As far as I can tell (and this is never explicitly stated), Joyce was a co-owner. She mentions someone else running it while she's sick, and she often says that "we" got something in for the gallery. Again, never stated, just me extrapolating and I could be wrong. But if Joyce died, full ownership would probably revert to her partner and probably little or no monetary kickback to the Summers family.

I always speculated that the "we" was one of her higher-level employees (maybe a buyer?), since I don't remember her mentioning any business partners when she was opening the gallery. Of course, she could have acquired one sometime between seasons one and five. Either way, it strikes me as odd that no one even mentioned what happened to the gallery after Joyce died.

I guess I just never put that much thought into it. From the character's standpoint, I'm sure that Tara and Willow helped as much as they could. Remember that no one on the show besides Xander, Giles, and Anya had jobs at that point... Where would they get any money to pay bills with?

Yeah, and Xander, Giles and Anya shouldn't be asked to help out because they all have apartments to pay for themselves.
Since Willow and Tara actually live in Buffy's house - they should have been helping with the rent. It's really too much to ask Dawn to work as she has full-time high school and was still underage at that point, correct?

She was 14 at the time, so she was a little young to be helping with the bills. Besides, based on my experience as a 14 year old, the only official job she could have had was as day camp counselor, which is short-term and doesn't pay much; anything else she could have done would also have been a pocket money job (babysitting, cleaning garages for neighbors, etc).

While I understand that, Willow and Tara couldnt just let Dawn live by herself so one of the scoobies had to move in with her and all of the scoobies took over the parenting/looking after of Dawn. It was just easier for Willow and Tara to move in than Xander/Anya/Giles due to living in the dorms, so I wouldnt put it all on them to take care of a house they only moved into so they could take care of Dawn. So I think Xander/Anya/Giles should have equally helped out aswell.

if that were the case then all the insurance money (which they confirm covered at least part of the costs), combined with Willow/Tara/Dawn/Spike's money, plus the savings... im sorry but a house is not THAT expensive to run.

Willow and Tara alone should be enough to cover operating costs (i think the house was even paid off at this point wasn't it? Thats why Buffy wanted a loan taking equity out of the paid off house... "for some reason houses in sunnydale have never been competitive").

As they have only lived there 5 years (they moved in at the beginning of S1), I seriously doubt the house was paid off. Usually takes 20-30 years to do that. And although the Sunnydale housing market isn't that competitive, that's when comparing it to the rest of Southern California. A house that big in Oklahoma would probably cost you at least 2,000 a month to pay it back. You could probably triple that based on their location easy. Plus utilities. We're talking a minimum of $7,000 a month, and that's probably underestimating the costs of upkeep. When you add it up, it's very likely that they did run through that insurance money pretty quickly. I've never known two college students combined incomes to be over $7,000 a month (assuming Willow and Tara weren't working the nightshift at a gentleman's club....)

It may be selfish, but assume you are in the same situation- It's hardly likely you'd go out looking for a job the day after your best friend died and you moved into her house to care for her little sis. And yes, they could have gotten part time jobs and still went to college (Lord knows I'm doing that right now) but I always assumed they helped out at the Magic Box from time to time and earned a little side money that way....

Oh, and I never thought Joyce owned the gallery. In S1 she just implies she got a job at a gallery (as far as my memory serves)

Willow and Tara should have got jobs. I often say to my mum when talking about Buffy that sometimes the fans know more about the characters then writers, and this is a prime example. In particular Tara – she always showed so much sympathy towards Buffy and her situation (more so then any of her friends).

Taras character was always one to show support and empathy, and I find it hard to believe that Tara wouldn’t have offered to pay some rent. Can’t you just picture her little sympathetic, understanding look “We’ll do what we can Buffy, Willow and I can can pay board”. Buffy was desperate for someone to help her, look at how quickly she accepted Giles money, something she normally wouldn’t do.

Tara and Willow were college students, sure, and they were looking after Dawn, which is a huge responsibility, even more so in Sunnydale! They were grieving, things were tough for them. None of that is an excuse for not getting a job to help pay for bills and groceries.

There would have been plenty of opportunities for them to work – Look how many crappy jobs Xander managed to find in season 4. They could have served drinks at The Bronze on a Friday night or worked at the local book store on a Saturday, even served coffee’s at the espresso pump for a 5 hour shift on a Tuesday afternoon after class. This could have pulled in an extra couple of hundred between them.

I remember posting about this in another thread I think…

What about grieveing, taking care of Dawn AND working on the Buffybot and researching resurrection.

Thats all fair enough but your assuming they chipped in, but please got back and watch the scene where they are breaking the news to Buffy. It was a one sided deal, along the lines of "your insurance money isnt covering it, and this house is bleeding your money just sitting here, what are you gonna do Buff?"

Take S6 as a whole, it appears all that was needed was a crappy Job slinging burgers to actually PAY what was needed. Am I right? Buffy got a job and we dont really have many financial issues after that, and that was a CRAPPY job.

My point is that during this episode it was very uncomfortable watching buffy yet again take on more responsibility while her friends stood by bitching and whining (to extreme measures by S7's end)

My point is that this burden should have been shared and Buffy was the leader and the general, she should never have been the slave working at Double meat crappy palace. This, i believe, is a lack of responsibility on Willow and Tara's part, and to a lesser degree Spike, Dawn, and Anya.

What is she, a dictator?

And after Buffy came back, Tara left, so no weird that after that summer, when she was busy bringing back Buffy from the dead and keeping up apperances, she didn't have to pay bills at the house, because she moved. And before that, she was struggeling with Willow's magic abuse.

And you know, Willow was busy being heartbroken and addicted. Not superb excuses, but it's not like they're Buffy's mom.

I might be biting your head of for nothing, but you made it sound as if Buffy was the master and Tara and the others minions who had to do the dirty work...

Buffy wasn't the master, she was forced to take full responsibility of something that should have been shared.

If in fact she wasnt taking full responsibility and everyone had a job, well then the "your broke" conversation would have gone down differently.

A lot of people are excusing Willow and Tara because they're full time students.

So what?

I was a full-time student AND holding down a full-time or nearly full-time job for 4 years before grad school, when I got a part-time graduate assistant position. AND I was (am) married. AND for the first few years, I was paying off a $10,000 debt to another college (which my parents SHOULD have been taking care of, but let's not get sidetracked). I made it through with a 3.8 undergrad GPA, didn't get evicted, didn't starve, didn't get a divorce. Sure, I would rather have been studying or hanging out with friends, but I did what I had to do. My point is, being in college is no excuse.

The REAL reason is that in S6, life is the Big Bad. It's hard, and it's every day, and it's alone, whether you have someone helping you or not. Willow wasn't ready for life and the real world, hence her magic addiction. Buffy really wasn't, either, but she tried really hard to make it all work, not only for her, but for Dawn. While I don't agree with a lot of choices that Buffy made getting there, she handled the responsibility and hardship MUCH better than Willow ever did.

As for Tara, her role in the show didn't really lend itself to working and helping. She was the emotional caregiver, not the physical. That was Giles (and he bailed, too, but don't get me started on THAT one). For some reason, I've always blamed Tara less than Willow for all this. Willow was incredibly selfish through the entire season.

And if I knew I was going to go on this long, I probably would have brought some water. Phew!

That wasn't a rant. You ain't seen nothin yet, boy!
In general, I was always surprised that Willow, Tara, and Dawn never got jobs. Over the course of a coming-of-age kind of show in which a young cast transitions out of high school and college, it's just kind of natural that all of the characters would explore their career options and skills. Add the financial necessity of season 6 and, well, it's sort of mind boggling that Willow and Tara are never portrayed as having worked.

I add Dawn to the list because at 14, it may still have been possible for Dawn to work at a grocery store or something. Even so, she wouldn't be legal at most jobs until the age of 15, and then she'd have shortened hours and increased restrictions until 16. Legally, it would be tough for her to make more than a supplementary income out of jobs like those + under-the-table pocket money jobs until she was 18. That said, a supplementary income would have significantly reduced the financial cost of raising Dawn and given her a sense of purpose, independence, and contribution to the group, as well. Lots of kids do it. Lots of kids pay for their own cars, entertainment, food, gas, etc. and save up money for college. It just so happens that I worked several under-the-table from the time I was 13, transitioned to one above-the-table job when I was 16, and was promoted to a supervisory position when I was 17, and I paid for my own food, clothing, entertainment, and a trip to Europe whilst socking away moolah for college. I'm not saying that grieving Dawn had to do all of that. I'm just saying that had Dawn been even a smidgen more mature and self-reliant, she could have gone a long way toward helping out. instead, she seemed content to be a burden on everyone else and even to steal from Anya.

As far as Willow and Tara go, well, there's not much of an excuse for reaching your early twenties (aren't they 22 or so when the series ends?) and never punching a single time card. You don't just come out of college and get a job! You have to have work experience. Even if they were being incredibly selfish and not chipping in at Buffy's place at all while still somehow receiving enough grant and parental support money to support their lifestyles (which doesn't sound like them), they should have been smart enough to at least land unpaid internships. I always thought it was short sighted of the writers not to have at least referenced their jobs once in awhile. I mean, why couldn't one of them have at least had a student assistant position at the school library (I did that) or one of the administrative offices (I did that, too)? By the time I was 22, I was a married college graduate working as a tech writer for a software company, and I'm no super powerful witch. If I could manage that without the mojo, then Willow and Tara could have managed to flip a few burgers or shelve a few books. The fact that they didn't, well, that doesn't exactly paint them in a very positive light.

So what?

You know, Blondie, I'm right there with you. I'm an undergrad single mom raising a two year old and working 25-30 hours a week on top of that. (I do get alot of help from my BF, gotta give him his credit). I think Tara and especially Willow should have helped out some. What I was pointing out is that to expect them to be able to keep up that big house on their own without using the insurance money (ignoring the problem of them actually obtaining the money) is not feasible. It's hard enough for me to pull in $500 a month, much less the income you would need to pay for that big house.

I'm not justifying Willow and Tara not helping out (although I think expecting anything more than about 10 hours a week of work out of Dawn is silly-she's still a young teen), I'm just saying that you are being a bit harsh on them, especially in the beginning of S6. It's hard to find a decent job, especially one that will work around your schedule. To expect them to be able to solely support that house on their own is a little ridiculous.

Sidenote: Perhaps how they used the income money is that it was deposited into Buffy's bank account and the bills were automatically deducted out of that. Just a thought. Also, many companies pay in installments, not in one lump sum

And no way would a single minimum wage job be able to pay for that house and their living expenses. They were still relying on outside money, whether it came from the insurance company or from that check from Giles.

^ Oh, I agree. They really should have gotten rid of the house. I know there was apparently some reason why they couldn't (I don't understand real estate, really), but keeping it was just bad.

Yes because I can't totally see how that relates in the real world when one of my best friends just committed suicide, i found out my mum was adopted, my "real"grandfather is in jail, my best friend is suffering depression in a major way, my grandmother that means the world to me has just been told her life style isn't going to support her... BUT screw my job... THAT I can do without!!!

Oh-kay. I'm not entirely sure how much of that was sarcasm, and I'm not quire sure what you're trying to argue. That we can't expect Willow to hold down a job because of what was going on, or what?
