was it just me or did Buffy talk an AWFUL LOT this season. Lecture the potentials in this episode, her friends in the next. I kinda got what Anya was saying about her thinking she's better than everyone else, I kinda got a 'hollier than thou' attitude off her. But please, tell me if I'm wrong.

You really didn't like season 7 did you ^_^

Buffy had to talk a lot, there was a war coming and she needed to take charge. She couldn't have just sat back and watched the potentials do as they like. She did come across as being better than everyone else (I think she admitted thinking it at one point), but in fairness she was, wasn't she?

Even still, if I was one of the potentials I'd have walked out on those speeches. At least as a viewer I can fast-forward them.

I agree, as you said something big was going on and in order to prepare the best she could for what was coming she had to hammer home the seriousness of the situation.

And as Slayers go she has lived longer than most, so she was better than them. But i'm not saying that her 'I'm better than you' attitute was the best way to get the potentials to listen to her but really thats not her job, she is not meant to be their mother. As a Slayer its her job to fight and that can be hard enough at the best of times, never mind dealing with a group of people who had little or no training or experience.

But on that same point because they were young and inexperienced and she was the Slayer they looked up to her as somewhat of a role model. But lets put it this way, could she have acted a bit better to them, perhaps but at the end of the day by being tough towards them she felt she was preparing them for what they were about to face.

She had to act as the Potentials General. She had to be tough on them and give them all the speeches she did because it was the only way they would be able to survive the coming war. It was her responsibility to step up and be the leader. Now the leader isn't always liked and yes she did make mistakes, but she did what she thought was right for them to survive.

So completely true...
Yes, Buffy did talk alot, but it was just part of her character development. She has some amazing speeches, and then some not so great speeches. These were pivotal in the in helping the story flow.

Is there anything that you do like in season seven? 🙂

I have never seen a 'holier than thou' attitude from Buffy. Now, I don't know if it's because the character is my favorite, or what. As said before, Buffy is probably one of the longest-lived slayers, and knows her stuff. She was trusted with the lives of many potentials... and was used in changing the slayer line. I'd say that she deserves a little speech giving time. She's their ruler.

But, even though she is 'boss' of them, it in no way means that she is better. All the characters have been 'the boss' and they have not characterized as better than everyone else. I think this opinion is believed by people about Buffy because of the way she does her job... straight to the point, lay it on the line, shut up and fall in line.

Buffy annoyed me, too, in season seven with all her speeches. I understand that she had to lead and rally all the potentials, which she did pretty well, but her speeches did tend to run on a lot. And I did get the "Holier than thou" attitude from her, because she even admitted that she thought she was better than everyone else in Conversations With Dead People. (At least, I think that was the episode.) But all in all, she lead the potentials, which was her job, so kudos to her.

The first times I watched this season, I was really bugged by it too, believe me. But the truth is (imo) that Buffy had to believe that she was better. Her character developed in a way that is a bit scary in my opinion, but also very realistic, and the way she had to develop. The preassure on Buffy in the second half of this season... Well it's like nothing we've ever seen before. And especially after what happened with some of her friends in season six, Willow of course, but also Anya/Anyanka (beginning of season 7). Buffy had to only really trust herself. Not 'cause her friends didn't love her or because they didn't try but because Buffy knew such things could happen. And like with Spike, siring people althought he didn't even know it himself. Buffy had to be in control and in her mind she was the only one who could deal with this, the one who had to deal with it, 'cause basicly, she was the Chosen One.

Didn't buffy admit to having a superioty compex beofre the potentials even arrived in series 7. Fair enough i get the idea where speeches are needed for motivation but there was no interaction, her speeches helped in the way thats not ad she tended to seem like she was talking at them rather than to them.

Also i dont think buffys better than anyone else on the show, fair enough she had the duty of the slayer etc, etc, etc and she has survived for a long time, but we all know buffy only survived because of her friends. I think anyas speech was totally right and i loved the way that after it buffy calmed down and started acting like a real person rather than a bossy b****

yeah Anya's speech to Buffy was great. I really made Buffy step back for a minute and think about what she was doing. It was nice to see Anya do something like that.

Well in the vein of a previous topic

I understand what the pro-kickherouters are saying. Buffy was mean, etc, etc. I understand this is a tv show but within the boundaries of the television I have to make this point.

They were at WAR. You can't be nice in a war, you can't take everybody opinions in account. War isn't about kittens and puppies and let's all sit down and ask how everyone feels and then make a decision and then talk about that decision and then talk about that talk.

Part of what Buffy does is take action..she slays, she helps, she saves....allot. This wasn't like any other apocalpyse and she really had to be pushy.

The pivotal point is when they went into the vineyard because Buffy believed they were protecting something there and no one else did but were they? Yes. The Scythe that gave them the power to defeat The First. Looking at things post-eviction how did things improve for them? They argued a bit and talked about that and then was involved in bomb explosion...yeah kicking Buffy out really lead to good stuff. .......well it kinda did It led to that cute Spike and Buffy moment but other than that I think it was a bad decision on their part.

I think I repped you last time you posted this too! So...here ya go!
The bomb was a unforseeable consequence and could have happened to anyone. At least they took action, buffys regime was sloppy. I mean she didnt even bother asking andrew why he had opened the seal andhow etc until like 6 months later. When buffy left they gathered information, made an attack that definetly, if successful would have helped in the war. The bomb couldn't be helped and buffy could just as easily ade the same mistake, in fact taking the girls to the vineyard when she knew it WAS A TRAP was a much bigger mistake

well sorry...but when i try and post an opinion yall go postal on me!

No one is going 'postal'. Being part of a community like this you have to accept that not everyone has the same opinions that you do. Its why its called a discussion board as there would be little to discuss if we all agreed on every single point all the time.

It really bothers me how everyone is so quick to jump down Buffy's throat about her actions in Season 7, but Faith's murderous ways are so easily forgiveable.

Buffy put herself out there to be the leader, because she could and in many cases, she was the only one with the power. When she stepped out like that, she put herself in the line of fire in terms of criticism.

Faith was more comfortable fading into the background when it came to heroics, the only time she really ever stood out was when she was being bad.

Maybe my sense of right and wrong differs from others, but I can't honestly see this argument people are trying to make about Buffy being a pointless biatch in Season 7.

I don't think you can really compare people "jumping down Buffy's throat" and forgiving Faith's murderous ways. Most people in the discussion are just saying that her long speeches got kind of, well, long and annoying. That doesn't have anything to do with her leadership skills. And this is a little bit OT, but Faith paid penance for her actions, and now she's not so murderous. Angel, Spike, Anya, Giles, and Andrew were all forgiven for their "murderous ways", why can't Faith be?

Okay, back on topic now. Yeah, Faith didn't want to be the leader, she didn't ask to be the leader, and she wasn't as good of a leader as Buffy was. But that isn't what this thread is getting at. Most people aren't saying that Buffy was a "pointless biatch", just that she got a little long-winded. And that she actually admitted to thinking that she was better than everyone else. That doesn't make her pointless, just a little conceited.

They're not forgiveable, just understandable, in my opinion.. Which is a huge difference. I can still like a character like Faith, understand and like what all that stuff have turned her into, and find the things that happen to her character interesting.. But it doesn't mean what she did is okay or anything...

As for Buffy.. I know I used to talk about how wrong she acted in season 7, and I understand people who think so and I still sort of do but.. not I also understand why she had to do that, or felt like she had to...

Gah, it's all so sad and I sometimes hate the way I can always understand even the most "evil" characters, 'cause there are always reasons they do what they do..

just because someone disagree's with you doesn't mean they hate you. I disagree with some of your opinions, but I don't hate you at all. Thats why this is an interesting board, because you get alot of different views on subjects. Don't take it personally.

Well put
Neither faith or buffy were good leaders, or even decent leaders, buffy was bitchy and arrogant, faith was reckless, neither of them should have been the leader, and they were only made leaders because they were the slayer. I think Giles should have been the leader he has all the skills required to be a good leader
