At the time Buffy took it, the SAT consisted of two sections... mathematics and verbal, with a maximum score of 800 in each for a combined maximum score of 1600. A score of 1430 would be very high... enough to get you considered by Ivy League schools. The average score was around 1000. (You got a 400 just for writing your name.)
In 2005 they expanded the SAT by adding a writing test as well, and the maximum score is now 2400.
The real surprise was Cordelia. In order to get accepted at Columbia, she would have needed a score around equal to, or better than, Buffy's.
