Buffy's tombstone

Exactly what Buffy said above.

It's all very well saying that it was important to keep the death of the slayer a secret but at the end of the day the Scoobies had lost somebody they loved dearly. There was no way that they were going to have her buried in an unmarked grave. The headstone was a mark of respect that was the least she deserved.

It would have been worthwhile if this had been mentioned in the script though. Maybe having Xander ask whether it was wise to have the headstone in case some random demon stumbled across it and have Willow mention that she had used some sort of mystical cloak to prevent anyone or anything seeing it that didn't already know it was there. Something like that would have avoided the inconsistency.
 
That's a good thought! It would've been much better if you're above rewrite would've actually been part of the show.

To be honest I'd have been more concerned with any of Buffy's non-scoobie friends happening to see it.

What exactly do you say to a mate who has seen your gravestone out in the middle of nowhere? 😉
 
Hmmm, probably the same thing regarding the Demons and the high mortality rate....its not real, its all in your head or even 'its a different Buffy Summers that lived here, I mean thats not even my Date Of Birth - just look at the school files😉'

That would have taken up precious time in the show though for an explanation that most people wouldn't be wondering about years later 😉

Why have BuffyBot if the writers didn't plan to have her in later seasons?
She/It was just a sex toy and that's all? That seems a bit shallow, eh?
 
So? Shows are allowed to do shallow occasionally. Its just like the cheese man in Restless. Wasnt for any reason.

Well, that's not so much a theory as it is an actuality. During the time that Season 5 was airing, Buffy's contract was up, and the WB wasn't sure if they were going to renew it, which led to a big bidding war with a bunch of networks to get the rights to the show (or something - I've also heard that the WB officially cancelled the show, which was what led to the bidding war).

The show's fate was very up in the air at that point in time, and episodes airing during that time were advertised as "the final X episodes," with The Gift billed as "the series finale." The episode, which I don't believe was changed much from it's original form, ended up becoming the de facto finale, just in case nobody picked the show up.

As for the headstone, I thought it was pretty clear from what we saw in Bargaining that the grave was hidden pretty deep into the forest. Personally, I think any further explanation in regards to it's concealment or whatnot is unnecessary for storytelling purposes, but that's just me.
