Buffy's Watcher

I think the Watchers Counsel definitely knew about the Hellmouth. Later in the series they mention there are more than one Hellmouth (Cleveland), so even though Giles may not have known I believe the counsel did.
 
Sorry but I can't summarize the comics, my English is to bad but if you were really intersted, buy the Comics of BTVS
 
This probably a REALLY stupid question but,

Didn't Merrick die in the BtVS movie? (It's been awhile since i watched it)

There are no stupid questions. Merrick died in LA, either by being staked by Lothos (movie version) or self inflicted gun shot (comic) to avoid having Lothos turn him.
I don't know if someone wrote this yet, but remember in NKABOTFD, Giles told Buffy he was destined to be a watcher. Whether that meant as a normal watcher, or as the watcher to the slayer we don't know. But I have always figured that the it was destiny for Buffy to be the slayer and for Giles to be her watcher.

When Buffy got kicked out of school, Joyce made a comment that Sunnydale was the only school that would take her. I think it's because the council used it's power to make that happen. Even if they didn't know Sunnydale was a hellmouth, they probably knew it had crazy things happening there so they wanted Buffy and Giles there. And let's be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if the council knew Sunnydale was the hellmouth, and sent Giles there to be Buffy's watcher without telling him. They aren't generous with information, especially with Giles for whatever reason.

Doesn't Giles say something about Buffy's arrival in Sunnydale not being a coincidence? I pretty sure it was in Welcome to the Hellmouth. I always believed that it wasn't. Why in the world would Buffy's mom want them to move to Sunnydale? She had to have heard about that high mortality rate 😉
