Buffy's Watcher

Yeh i think with Merrick and Kendra her not dwelling on there deaths is probably down to her spending very little time with them. Although in saying that i think i'am right in saying that when Kendra dies she is very upset and takes mr pointy in her honor, quite a touching moment.

I don't know if he was her second watcher, I know he was a very good watcher until the episode he made her stengh go away.

This is a world where its all about fate. As Giles says in WTTHM, 'theres a reason why your here, and theres a reason why its now'. As fate goes, it was meant to be Buffy, it was meant to be Giles. There is no such thing as coincidence(which i believe is true to real life) Buffy even says, 'theres two things i dont believe in, coincidence and (sorry, i cant remember other thing) it was meant to be

coincidence and leprochauns ;)
I think Merrick's death did affect Buffy. As did everything that happened her first year as the Slayer. Fifteen was a hard age for Buffy. She suddenly finds out demons are real and it is her responsibility to keep the world safe from them, she tells her parents and they force her into the psych ward for three weeks, Merrick is killed by vampires, she loses all of her friends or rather she learns she never had true friends, she gets kicked out of school and no other school in the district will take her, her parents get divorced, she has to go out every night patrolling for demons despite the fact that she is learning how to fight as she goes along (unlike previous Slayers who have years of training beforehand), she has to let her parents think she is a violent gangbanging arsonist psycho because they somehow think that is better than an ethical demon hunter, and she has to uproot out of the city she was born and raised in and move two hours away to a small town she's never heard of with students and school officials that will have already heard of some of the things she has done and thus treat her badly.

It is no wonder why she was so hesistant in Welcome to the Hellmouth to jump back into the fray and battle evil. Her first day at Sunnydale High had the principal talking about her "absymal" transcripts, students gossiping about what a freak she is, vampires once again on campus (just like at Hemery, leading to things like burning down school gyms), her mom dropping her off while saying "Try not to get kicked out", horrible nightmare prophecy dreams about some of the things that are in store for her in this new town, etc.

I always kind of wanted to see a bit more about her and Merrick, but I suppose Joss felt he had covered that with the movie and didn't want to dwell in the topic

I always thought he should have redone the Buffy movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and directed it himself and fought for it to have the same vibe as the tv series (which is less campy comedy). Sarah did flashback scenes in the S2 finale of her first day finding out she was the Slayer. I believed she was fifteen.

How much more different is the movie than the Origin comic (which is based on the screenplay, no)? I want to watch the movie for myself but I'm wary of doing so. 😱

Watch the movie, just to know what others are on about, just don't expect anything wonderful, or good. I thought it so bad it was almost camp.
Dammit, you're right, it sounds like he just found out.

Come to think of it, maybe the watcher's didn't even know what a Hellmouth was. Didn't Giles get the name Hellmouth from translating a name in another language or something?

I thought the first mention of a "Hellmouth" came from Angel in the alley with Buffy....then she see's Giles at the Bronze and when asked what "he" said...."Something about the mouth of hell...I REALLY didn't like him".....😵

Agreed. That's one of the reasons I fell in love with the show. No matter how bad high school got for me, I always thought, "At least I don't have it as bad as Buffy."

I mean the stuff the girl had to deal with!

I think that the Watcher's Council definitely had a hand in what School Buffy was accepted to and what Job Joyce was able to find after the events in the gym. They wanted Buffy in Sunnydale because of the Hellmouth. As for Giles I think that Giles was probably assigned to Buffy because of his breadth of knowledge about the supernatural. I always assumed that the Council would have picked the best of the best to be the Watcher for a Slayer that was living on a Hellmouth.

I have no idea which ep it is, but
in s5, I think, the council comes to Sunnydale to see if Buffy is "worthy" enough to have information on that specific big bad. I'm really thinking it's about Glory. They say something to the effect of Buffy playing along or they'll have Giles deported, because they have the resources.

So if they can do that, why not control which school will accept Buffy?

We see Merrick in Becoming Pt 1. In the movie he was killed by a vamp in LA who staked him in the heart...it's been a while since I read the comic so I don't remember if that's how it happens in there too.

I believe Giles was told of Buffy's coming. I was always confused about how the council could not know that the hellmouth was there though, since evil clearly did, and that is also why Wilkins built the town there. I never thought that the council would have influenced Buffy coming there, but that would definitely make sense, and if they do have seers and whatnot, then they could have foreseen that something big was going to happen there.

Giles: It's getting worse!
Buffy: What's getting worse?
Giles: The influx of the undead, the... supernatural occurrences, it's been building for years. There's a reason why you're here and a reason why it's now!
Buffy: Because now is the time my mom moved here.

I think the council choose him to be the replacement watcher because when Willow talks about "the new librarian" she says he used to be a curator in a British museum and he brought books and relics with him. Why else would he go to sunnydale public high school to be a librarian.

Yeah that always confuses me too when Giles seems unknowing about the Hellmouth to start but then perhaps it was only he who didn't know, the council might have known but not informed him, there's the chance that they weren't sure it was the Hellmouth (seeing as how there's one in Cleveland there might be others...)

Well at the end of "Chosen" they mentioned that there's another hellmouth in Cleveland. So maybe there's a bunch of Hellmouths and they only figure out where they are when theres a big bad trying to open it.

I alway's found it a bit confusing that they used a different actor as Merrick in the flashbacks, which alway's makes me think that Buffy had three watchers instead of two.
It would have been great if they could have gotten Donald Sutherland back to play Buffy's First Watcher for the TV series flashbacks.

Yeah, I can see that that's confusing. But not everyone has seen (or wants to see 🙂) the movie. I had no problem with it. Merrick in the comics looks like Merrick in the series (don't know which came first, I'm going to guess Merrick on TV). But Donald Sutherland is cool!

Donald Sutherland=VERY COOL:)
Well, not sure if there's much point in me commenting due to the fact that I'll probably just repeat what everyone else has said.

I do think that Giles was destined to be Buffy's Watcher. He wouldn't just be placed in that libarary around the time Buffy was coming for no reason. I think in the first episode Welcome to the Hellmouth, Giles hinted something about how Buffy was 'meant' to arrive in Sunnydale, that it wasn't just a coincidence that she had come. So I suppose that meant something, right?

I may be wrong about all this though.

I also do agree with what some others have said. Maybe Giles didn't know about the Hellmouth, maybe even the Watchers didn't. Because it DID seem like he had just found a lot of this stuff out in the begining. He was so overexcited the way he gets.
