Name: Doyle (Glenn Quinn)
Location of Death: "Angel"
Date of Death: 1999
Cause of Death: Electrocution, from trying to dismantle a death machine that could only be found on shows like this.
Breakdown: "Angel" was the grim spin-off of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and during the show's first season, it only had three main characters: Angel (David Boreanaz), the vampire-turned-cosmic-detective/champion; Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter), his vain assistant, and Doyle, a witty half-demon whose visions help Angel save victims suffering in Los Angeles. Fans immediately loved Doyle, whose wit and good nature interjected some warmth and humor into an often bleak and dark show. But this didn't stop creator Joss Whedon from pulling the rug out and offing Doyle nine episodes into the series, thus killing 33 percent of his cast. Doyle's self-sacrifice saved the world, but it upset viewers so much that many never returned to "Angel." Bummer for them, because it was just getting great. Over the course of five seasons, nearly everyone on the show died ... L.A. ain't a pretty place. Sadly, Quinn himself died young, just three years after his TV demise.

Name: Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar)
Location of Death: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"
Date of Death: 2001
Cause of Death: Mystical: She jumps from a high platform into a time portal to stop the Apocalypse (again) and then falls to the ground dead.
Breakdown: So many painful deaths populate "Buffy" that another list is needed. I'm sure many of you will write in and say Tara or Joyce or Jenny Calendar or Anya belongs here instead. Yes, those were all rough (especially Tara). However, it comes down to one thing: They were supporting characters. When Joss Whedon and crew killed off their titular character at the end of season five, you could hear gasps across the Buffyverse. Gutsy doesn't begin to describe the plot twist. And, yes, she came back in season six, but that was even more twisted and upsetting than her beautiful self-sacrifice. The final images are lasting. After Buffy's dead body is shown lying on the ground, friends sobbing around her, you think, "Nah, she's not really dead. They can't kill the main character." Cut to a gravestone that reads: "BUFFY ANNE SUMMERS; 1981-2001; BELOVED SISTER, DEVOTED FRIEND, SHE SAVED THE WORLD A LOT." Sniff.

Its good to see Doyle's death so far up the first page from a site that is not Buffy related. Well not good because he was my fave character but good in the way that it was recognised.

Jenny's death was pretty shocking too . Wonder why she is not listed...

I'm really glad that they picked Doyle's death for Ats, but it's a shame they didn't at least mention the others like they did for Btvs. Darla? Cordeila? Fred? Wesley? Lindsey? All of those were great too.

If we're talking about most shocking deaths, I hafta say Doyle shocked me the most. But in BtVS, I had to go with Tara. When I saw that episode, I knew she was going to die but I was still shocked and wanted to break out in tears and scream "Why God, WHY?"

I agree, I knew that she was going to die in just that episode but I was still shoocked when it happened. Joyce's death was also shoocking, I was all fooled and thought she was better and healthy again.

Yeah Joyce's death might've been less of a shock since we had a lot of time to suspect it and to accept it... But it was still the saddest imo. Most surprising was Anya though, might be 'cause that's the only one I didn't know about before I saw it 😉

Yes, but I still thought Joyce was all well again, and had given up the thoughts of her dying. In chosen I was surprised by an un-death, I thought I'd read somewhere that Buffy was going to die, so I was just waiting for that all along..

I cant believe Fred death was not mentioned, I was so shocked when that happened, I did not see it coming(cuz they had killed cordy a little while before) and even when she died I thought she was gonna come back. And then we find her soul was destroyed. I was sitting there with my mouth open!

Bit OT but doyle didn't save the world did he, he saved a lot of lives but not the world. Unless you consider what would have happened if angel had died instead then the world would probably have ended so in that way you could argue he did save the world.

I think tara or joyce's death was most shocking in buffy, afterall i just wasn't expecting whereas with buffy we all knew she was destined for death and at some point knew she would die, again lol although it was still shocking killing of the main character isn't something usually done

I think the most shocking death was Joyce's I cried 4 hours and what about Spikes death in Buffy sure he came back in Angel but it still sucked when they took him away.

I was blissfully "unspoilered" so I had no clue that Tara was gonna die...I just sat with my mouth open in shock. Joyce was sudden, but with her illness it was kind of foreshadowed. Tara's was like a bolt from the blue (ok, a shot in the dark...) for anyone not expecting it.

Have to agree with KD i too was spoiler free so was shocked to see tara die as it was shocking, i was even more suprised when she didn't return i thought for sure willow would find a way to save her but alas she didnt

I was spoiled about Tara's death and sadly I wasn't very much affected by it. Seems like everyone else did. Interesting...

Jenny - Shocked me, not because of the death, but because of the use of it by Angelus as a mind game.

Tara - I had no spoiler, infact i was happy because it was the episode that she was given a opening star credit...i was so happy...at last she was a full timer, then BAM she died...i thought she cant.....she must come back, why would joss do that.

Spike - I knew before i saw Chosen that he would be alive in Angel so his death did ABSOLUTELY nothing for me....if i hadnt have known....yeah it may have been cool...but as it is...nothing

Joyce - This was fabulous. I was upset big time...and yes it was expected...but Like Tara tells buffy in Body, its always sudden.

Buffy - She died twice, and as the Show was Buffy i knew that she would always survive, but that didnt stop her second death any less emotive....i loved that she sacrificed herself BUT something i never understood...IF it was when the blood stopped flowing that the portal closed, surely Dawns blood carried on flowing even when Buffy died....so the portal should have remained open...

now to the person who made the initial comments on the site.....i get the feeling the person who wrote this didnt really watch the shows, he just got the cliff notes and watched 20 mins or so

Joyce's death shocked me to the core, I almost forgot about it. Unexpected and felt so real. It upset me.
