Bumping...as in topics!

Hey.
I was just wondering about the whole bumping of topics.I've been on sites before were they throw a fit if you bump an old topic.:Guillotin So I thought I'd find out first.
So if I can across something old should I just avoid temptation to post something or is it cool to bump here?
 
As far as i'm aware you are free to add to any topic that has been left open, no matter how old the thread is or how long ago the last post was. Really don't think anyone around here will have any objections to you restarting an old topic! 🙂

Yeah I think it's ok, as long as you are not doing it needlessly because all the closed threads get put in the cemetery!
 
Bumping, which is by definition needless, is NOT allowed. From the FAQ:

Please do not 'bump' threads (posting only to bring the topic back up to the top of the forum).

Of course, this doesn't mean you may not reply on old topics, but you can't reply to them ONLY to put them back at the top of the forum.

It's fine to add your (on topic 😉) thoughts to any open thread, just please don't just post "bump" or similar to bring the post up to the top of the page.

You know what bugs me on other message boards, not so much here, because it rarely happens, but vanity bumping. Like if someone doesn't think his/her post is getting enough attention, so he/she posts a few words just to get their post back to the top to get attention.

I kind of like it when someone comes across an old post he/she can add a new perspective to though. I don't even think of that as bumping, because that's not why a bumper bumps. Just my personal opinion, of course.

Yeah, i'd have to agree with that. Bumping, to me, is just a pointless attempt to get people to read your particular comment or thread, regardless of whether there is anything more to say on the matter. Restarting an old topic because you have something new and interesting to add is entirely different.

I agree with the idea of vanity bumping.
Anyway thanks for clearing it up for me.
Better me knwing so I don't make a mistake.
