I read this while I was drinking my coffee this morning. =)

The list isn't bad by any means, but I definitely don't agree with all of it.

I personally really like Beer Bad, so although I wouldn't rank it all that high, I don't think it should be the worst episode of the series.

Thanks for the link! It was an excellent read that took almost an hour. I don't agree with the rankings in many cases, but it is interesting to see someone else's take on the series. The numbering is a little confusing in that they rank double episodes together.

I am not a big fan of rankings - I think the hit parade was the worst thing to happen to music - but it is interesting to see someone defend the rankings with logical thought processes.

Man, I really liked "Killed by death", can't believe it's so low. Same with "forever". And I loved "Wrecked", and "Empty Places", man I just disagree with a lot 😛 And "Showtime", that low! And "the Weight of the World", and "Anne".

A lot of the episodes in the middle should be a bit higher in my opinion, and some of the episodes at the bottom should be more in the middle. Like "Normal Again" at 70, come on that episode should have been top 20 in my opinion, if only for how it screws with your mind.

How is "Pangs" higher than all those episodes above, I thought it was average at best (I like the theme, but the whole ordeal was a bit silly, like syphilis Xander). Or "Older and far Away" and "Homecoming", although both episodes I really like, are not worthy of top 50 in my mind. "Prophecy Girl" was also not that great and it's very high on the list.

Some other choices I love though, "Earshot" was great, so was "Family", as well as "Fear, itself", "Band Candy", "The Prom", "Passion". The top 15 does include most of the best episodes, but I'd put them in a bit of a different order, and I wouldn't include "Becoming", "the Wish", "Surprise/Innocence", "Fool for love" or Tabula Rasa", although all of those would be highly rated, just not where they are at right now.

Now I want to make my own list to see how it compares 😛

WHY is 'Killed By Death' so low on that list?! I'm shocked at that, one of the truly scary episodes. I would have ranked 'Anne', 'Weight of the World', 'Normal Again', and 'Potential' a lot higher, and 'Phases', 'Older and Far Away', Seeing Red', 'Selfless', and 'Conversations with Dead People' MUCH lower. I was surprised that 'Becoming' took the number 1 spot, that's usually left for the likes of 'The Gift', 'The Body or OMWF.

I'm not surprised, however, that SMG ranks 'The Prom' so highly. She's always made it clear that she loves that ep. Still, it was nice that she took the time to read the list and comment.

I mostly agree with the top twenty, though I wouldn't have included:
Conversations With Dead People - I never got this episode, it felt like it was trying to force something on us, definitely not top 20 material.
Lie to Me -What? Why?
Tabula Rasa - Funny episode, but when you look at the great episodes around it, Fool for Love and Graduation day, it is not in the right place

I would have swapped in Earshot, Witch something else higher.

I also hate these lists are they are riddled with bias, and often looked at with authority. Even though I agree the top twenty are an (almost) good collection of top 20, it's pretty clear there's a dislike for season 7 and Riley is the list, some of season 7s best episodes are really good and they're way to low on the list.

Sounds like a good idea for a thread. I don't think we've done a top twenty list in awhile. Plus, it would be interesting to explain the reasons for your picks instead of just doing a list.

Becoming at number one? Really? Over The Body, Restless and Hush, episodes that are far more innovative, better acted and written, less melodramatic and more original?

When She Was Bad should be rated higher, that's a terrific episode. I'm in the minority when it comes to Ted, I thought it was incredible. Also, Normal Again at 70? That's top 20, right there.

I'm glad the Wish and Doppelgangland were rated very highly, they are amazing episodes.

I think the problem with the list isn't the ranking, yet the justifications of the choices themselves- no, not every Buffy fan cries at Wild Horses. Some of us cringe and despise that episode intensely (like myself). As well as the one on Doomed- gee, tell us what's wrong with the Buffy and Riley 'stuff'.

It strongly seems as this list was written to please all fans, the status quo, etc.

I agree with a lot of it. Obviously I can't agree with all of it. I do have an issue with Restless ranking so high when I think very little of it, lol.

Although, Becoming isn't my favorite episode, I can defiantly agree that its one of the greatest episodes and I do love it. It could very easily represent the show as a whole. I think that episode when I was younger had be hooked for life on the show.

I think "Becoming" was a good choice for number 1. It's not only a very good episode, I think it's quite representative of BtVS as a whole, which episodes like "Hush" or "The Body", or "Restless", good as they are, don't do- part of the reason I think that these episodes in particular stand out is not just because of their quality (which I agree is high), but also the fact that these episodes ARE unusual compared to the rest of the episodes.

Becoming is not only a high quality episode, it's also very much representative of the series as a whole, IMO, -supernatural battles as a metaphor for real world issues, it couples witty dialogue and action scenes with some other very emotional scenes, and in Angelus, Spike and Dru contained some of the most memorable villains of the series as a whole. So, even though it isn't my favourite, I can certainly appreciate it's place at number 1.

 

[Joan the Vampire Slayer]

I'm not so sure I agree with this. Sure, "Beer Bad" is bad...but is it the worst? I actually thought the metaphor of 'beer turns men into cavemen' was pretty clever. And I definitely don't agree regarding "Inca Mummy Girl." I love that episode; it's heartfelt, cute and entertaining. What's not to love? Also, I'd bump "Where the Wild Things Are" to the very top of the list. That episode is just unbearable. So much of this list feels like personal opinion masquerading as criticism. I mean, what makes "Becoming" better than "The Wish" or, say, "Restless"? They're all stellar episodes, but for different reasons. What criteria are they even using to evaluate these episodes? I must say, though, I am excited that "Tabula Rasa" made #11 - I've always loved that episode, and it's nice to see it being appreciated on the level it deserves. Their synopsis is pretty spot-on, too:

Willow tries to erase Tara’s memory, and ends up erasing everyone’s — including her own. The ensuing farce is the funniest Buffy has ever been. Buffy believes her name is Joan, Spike think he’s Giles’ son Randy, and no one has any idea that vampires are real. Anya and Giles also make out. It’s fantastic.
