Buzzfeed ranks the main characters of BtVS and Angel

I really don't understand the complaints on this thread about how this list is not objective, is biased, and is just one person's opinion. Um, yeah. That's exactly what it's supposed to be. If you ranked characters by how many minutes of screen time they had, that would be objective. Ranking characters from "worst" to "best" will always, always, necessarily, by definition, be subjective, biased, and opinion. Your disagreement with the list is just as much subjective, biased, and opinion.

Yes, it's impossible to be completely objective when ranking worst to best (unless you'd have a huge vote where the list would be pretty accurate for the majority), I think the issue (for me) is that this list is 1. Published on buzzfest and is made to seem like it's going to be objective and 2. It's not only subjective, it's over the top subjective. See, if I were to make my own list, even though my favorite character is Tara, I would not put her as the best character. And even though I don't really like Xander, I know he deserves a top 10 spot. Same for Angel and Spike, they might not be top 10 in my personnal list, but I know they'd deserve a spot. And putting Kennedy dead last is just bullcrap, people can hate her all they want, there's no way that she's worst than some of the awful characters on that list. Even people who hate Kennedy have said on this thread that she doesn't deserve that spot.

So, there are degrees of subjective? Aren't you really just saying that this seems more subjective to you because you don't agree with it? Or you don't know, and/or don't agree with, the author's criteria? I still don't get the "subjective" criticism. We're all being "subjective" in our responses on these notes. "Kennedy doesn't deserve to be last!" I think she does. Am I being "more subjective" than you?

Also, the author wrote at the beginning of the article, "This is going to be controversial!" and, at the end:

"So that's my list of the best and worst Buffyverse characters. What's yours?
People feel wonderfully possessive of their favorite characters, so this list was always bound to insult just about everyone's favorite at some point. Instead of a provocation, perhaps think of this as a celebration of all the characters who make the Buffyverse such a wonderful place to visit, and visit often. And then yell at me in the comments."

(Emphasis added.) That hardly seems to me that the author was trying to come across as objective. Which, when you're discussing opinions of a character, is completely impossible anyway.

This is just being circular. If you don't like Angel, that's fine, but it's a bit rich to say that the one supporting character who got his own series isn't in the top ten. That is over-the-top subjective.

It's not that there are necessarily degrees of subjectivity, but on a topic where objectivity is impossible, then yes, it is possible to be as close to objectivity as possible. This is a topic that I've seen discussed extensively in my bioethic class I'm taking in school, you don't have a choice but to be subjective, but you also need to be as objective as possible in your answer or else it's irrelevant. For example, I may have an opinion but decide that the best answer to a problem goes exactly against my belief. Neither answers are objective, but choosing the answer that is more correct (according to principles) is the more objective of the two.

Also, I'd like to point out that I don't disagree with all of the list. For example, I think Riley is right where he should be, I hate that dude, but in reality I do think he should be higher on the list. Also, one if the issue is that I don't even know what the author's criteria were. The guy ranked some characters that were there for one episodes (with no storyline) higher than regulars with much better stories, so yes I'm a bit confused by that, I would like to know exactly the criteria he used.

And on the topic of whether you're being more subjective then me by putting Kennedy dead last, no I don't think you're any more subjective than me if I were to make my own personal list (for which Tara would rank first, but let's be honest she doesn't deserve that spot). This is also why the board is talking about making our own list, where we would gather everyone's opinion to make a better list. In collecting many opinions, were at least going to get an average which will be closer to reality than just separate opinions.

Also, the author wrote at the beginning of the article, "This is going to be controversial!" and, at the end:

"So that's my list of the best and worst Buffyverse characters. What's yours?

Instead of a provocation, perhaps think of this as a celebration of all the characters who make the Buffyverse such a wonderful place to visit, and visit often. And then yell at me in the comments."

That's the problem, I'm not even insulted by the fact that my favorite characters didn't make it in the top, I'm insulted that some deserving characters did very poorly. Actually, *almost all of my favorites scored pretty high on the list.

(Emphasis added.) That hardly seems to me that the author was trying to come across as objective. Which, when you're discussing opinions of a character, is completely impossible anyway.

I think in this case, the title was misleading. When talking from best to worst, then I think you can be at least somewhat close to objectivity. The title should have been "My favorite characters from the verse". If that was the title, then I wouldn't be complaining.

It's not that there are necessarily degrees of subjectivity, but on a topic where objectivity is impossible, then yes, it is possible to be as close to objectivity as possible.

Then we will agree to disagree, because I couldn't disagree more. Analysis is either objective (ranking by number of minutes on screen) or subjective (ranking according to criteria of one's personal choosing).

Also, one if the issue is that I don't even know what the author's criteria were. The guy ranked some characters that were there for one episodes (with no storyline) higher than regulars with much better stories, so yes I'm a bit confused by that, I would like to know exactly the criteria he used.

So you disagree with him, and/or are suspicious of the criteria he chose. That's fair.

if I were to make my own personal list (for which Tara would rank first, but let's be honest she doesn't deserve that spot).

That's just a matter of selecting criteria. If you chose "favorite" as your criteria, Tara would come first, but you would rather create a list based on criteria that more people can relate to than it just being your "favorite." For example, your list might be based on character's value to the show, or character's moral compass, or any number of other things. I'm not sure what the word is for preferring criteria that will appeal to more people, but it's not "objective." Maybe "fair" is the word I'm looking for. It would still be subjective though.

In collecting many opinions, were at least going to get an average which will be closer to reality than just separate opinions.

It would certainly reflect more opinions. But there is no "reality" in ranking fictional characters from best to worst.

The title should have been "My favorite characters from the verse". If that was the title, then I wouldn't be complaining.

I'm afraid I disagree with that as well. I've had this discussion in other places on the 'net. I don't believe people need to explicitly label their opinions as "their opinions," when there is simply no possible doubt that the expression being offered is their opinion.

Like you said, I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree :p
I completely, whole-heartedly agree with this list EXCEPT FOR THE FOLLOWING:
Caleb, The First Slayer, The First, Dawn and Tara should be higher. I think Tara should be in the top ten, to be honest. I thank God that Anya was higher than Xander, even if it was only by one point, and WOO go Willow!

The seed for this insane project began when my colleague Louis Peitzman was finishing up his insane project of ranking every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (A similar post for Angel is in the works, by the way.

Ranking all the episodes of Angel is in the works!

I get what your saying, but I think the proof is in the reactions, people seem to have a much larger "no this is wrong" reaction to this list then there was to the ranking of the BtVS episodes list, of course people have favourites so it's subjective, but I think it's quite clear this list leans more favourite then a unbiased ranking of the best characters.

I agree that I dont think people have to be so PC about labelling thins as their opinions, but there but I think there is a big difference between a list of favourite characters and a list of best characters.

Buzzfeed also have a bit of weight to their lists as it's what they do, and labelling it a list of the best characters and not list of favourite characters makes it more definite.

I saw this on another forum earlier today, and I said that I don't put a lot of stock into these lists because they're a) fan-written and b) subjective. Everyone has different opinions of each character, so I never get all upset over these lists.
Now if Joss had written this, I'd feel differently. I'd be all "Willow as #1?! HELL NO!" LOL

Whoever wrote this has not even followed his own selection rules. Gwendolyn post is at 51. She only appears in one episode. Why is she even on the list at all?

THere is a difference between the way an American and a European view acting. Americans see the actor as really being typecast - he plays the part because he is closest to being the correct personality for it. A European does not consider an actor as being any good unless he can play a variety of parts. This is entirely foreign to an American - could you see a producer in the US saying, "John Wayne did a pretty good job as the town sheriff in the last movie, let's make him the cattle rustler in the next one." Americans would never accept that. Europeans would expect it.

If you are old enough to remember some of the early TV series, Dr. Kildare was played by Richard Chamberlain. Richard Chamberlain kept getting letters from people saying, "I have this pain in my side, what should I do about it?" and he would reply that he isn't a doctor, he just plays one in TV and the letter writer should see a qualified doctor.

In 2003, Charlize Theron played Aileen Wuornos in "Monster", where Aileen was a Daytona Beach prostitute turned serial killer. To play the part, she had to look rather ugly - certainly far worse looking than Charlize. But Charlize is a South African who came up through the European system. Americans were astonished that she was taking such a chance with her image. Europeans thought it was a good move that showed additional acting capability.

What are the thoughts of the person who wrote this list? I thought interms of acting talent, Michelle Trachtenberg played Dawn so well that you could forget the acting entirely. If I were to choose acting talent as the criterion, she would be in the first five and certainly above Willow. If the criterion is "who do I like to see on the screen?" thenthe list is entirely subjective and maybe makes some sense from that standpoint (although Kennedy as last makes no sense).

If the criterion is "favourite character as written", then the contest should be among the writers, not the actors or characters.

It is one thing to have a subjective list but when the criteria are also subjective and not even explained, then any random list is as good as any other.

I'm not familiar with Buzzfeed, but I think I understand what everyone is saying, that a list of "best" (not "my favorite") characters should purport to reflect what most people would think, not just what who that person's favorites are. Fair enough.

IIRC, the author said that a one-ep character could be eligible if he or she had an impact, which Post definitely did.

Are people still up for doing our own list? Perhaps we could condense it down to Top 50 Characters? We pick the 50 characters that will be included and then every week for 5 weeks we make our choices in batches of ten e.g. the first week would be 50-41. WIthin those weekly lists we make our choices based on a set of criteria we can agree on later but generally speaking it would include personal choice, impact on the verse etc. That way we can include our own personal bias without it swaying the whole list. We determine the list be counting the combined score of the characters according to their ranking. For example, I vote Buffy #1 and Willow #10. Buffy gets 1 point, Willow gets 10. This would mean that the lower a character's score is the more popular they are on the list and in the same way, the higher someone's score is the least popular they are. At the end of the 5 weeks we tot everyone's score up and whoever has the lowest is the "Best" character, whoever has the highest is the "worst" and then everyone in between.

I was gonna have a look and see if we could do one similar to this poll : http://www.dorkly.com/toplist/57438/the-worst-pokemon-of-all-time

Does anyone know of any online polling systems for doing something like that?

I've had a look and can't see to find one, I'd know how to code one up, but it would take a while so it's not really worth it?

If not we can do it Keans way, would be a fun list to put together?

We have polls going on in this forum right now. Why would you need to code anything?

Should be cool. ;)
Damn, I wish Wesley and Anya were higher. But Willow at number one? Hells yeah. I can go on for hours about why she is such a great and amazing character.

I do agree that Faith, Andrew, Spike etc are placed too high, and Riley + Doyle too low.

As long as Willow is number one (if Wes was number one, I'd be happy) I'm pretty much fine with the list.

Personally, I would have ranked most of AtS characters much higher, except for Fred who I liked the least out of that cast.

Also, the fact that whoever wrote it ranked Andrew so high up automatically has me disregard his/her opinion. IN fact Jonathan being so high is laughable.

While I can get people have their own opinions and all, ranking people who have little plot relevance or appear in little episodes overall higher than people like Lilah and Lindsey is just... WTF.

I was happy to see that Spike wasn't #1 for a change, but would rather have him be in that spot than Willow.

Gah. I should make my own list.
