Can Anyone Recomend Any Good Fantasy Books?

I'v just started reading The Gunslinger by Stephen King and I was wondering if people could recomend any other good fantasy books? Chronicles would be nice.
 
If you're in it for the long haul "Lord of the Rings" is the Daddy of all fantasy. But it'll take a chunk out of your life.
Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series - of which "The Gunslinger" is the first part - is well worth following.
 
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant The Unbeliever is a great fantasy series, written by Stephen R. Donaldson.

Another great one (if you're looking for series) is Roger Zelanzy's Amber series, which begins with Nine Princes in Amber.

Of course, Mr. Pointy already called the two best fantasy series ever (assuming the end of the Dark Tower series holds up....so far it's been jaw-droppingly kickass!)
 
LD - I'd totally forgotten Thomas Covenant and the Amber series. Brilliant books!
Lorne - I'd say Foundation were more sci-fi than fantasy but it's a pretty blurry border between the two I guess. The labels don't really matter that much if you enjoy a good read.

I forgot Terry Pratchett's Discworld books btw - just mentioned them in another thread - which are very funny fantasy.
 
If you like fantasy at all you should try Robert Jordan. His series "The Wheel of Time" is very well written. The first few books in the series are so detailed and the complexity of the characters is great. I really can't rave enough about these books.

Also, Dune by Frank Herbert is a classic. I got my start enjoying fantasy books by reading The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. Then I started reading Robert Jordan and I also enjoyed The Dark Elf trilogy by R.A. Salvatore. I got the books as gift and loved them.

Jordan's Wheel of Time is the best if you ask me ^^

hey Falcon.. we almost read the same books! The dark Elf trilogy is pretty god as well.. 😀
 
I forgot to mention George RR Martin's "Song of Fire and Ice" (or should that be "Ice and Fire" - I always get it wrong😉) I, for one, am eagerly awaiting the next instalment. Cracking old-school style of fantasy with knights and dragons et al. A good story which is very well written IMO.
 
the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman is incredible...even if i haven't read the last book yet.
The Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix is also great...the first 2 books, Sabriel and Lirael are excellent but the 3rd hasn't come out here yet 🙁
But my favourite is The Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson which is simply stunning. It's scary, funny, action-packed, full of secrets and mysteries, as well as having great characters and heartbreaking moments.
 
Got to recommend my fave fantasy series:-

  1. The Belgariad ( 5 books) & Mallorean series (5 books) by David & Leigh Eddings. All ten books are about the same characters and definitely not ot be missed in my opnion! 😀
  2. The Wit'ch series by James Clemens. A series of 5 books that has quickly become one of my fave all time reads.
  3. The Elenium (3 books) & Tamuli series (3 books) also by David & Leigh Eddings. Again, all 6 books revolve around the same charcters.
 
I was going to recomend the same books as Cordelia, but no i don't have to.
But deffinately a good choice. What i really liked about them was the amazing character development.... you become so attached to the characters, and really get to know them.

Right with you on that one Allycat - it's odd how I managed to forget the obvious ones. Harry Potter series is v definitely fantasy and also great fun to read. I think some people can't get over the fact that they're supposed to be children's books so they tend to get overlooked by "serious" readers - more fool them. I say 😉 I'm sure that "The Hobbit" was meant as a kid's book ( I first encountered it aged 8 or 9) and look what that led to...
 
i agree with allycat & mr. pointy for harry potter is a really good fantasy book but on the other hand *for adults* there is interview with a vampire, vampire lasat(i know i cant spell) and queen of the damed all by anne rice

It's more of a sci-fi bent but Tad Williams' 'Otherland' series of books is astonishingly good,not at all geeky yet very intelligent,great stuff.......
