Hello, new to the boards. Avid buffy fan for all 7 years and recently went to my local comic shop where all issues were half off. I grabbed 1-39 of season 8, the Willow and Riley one shot and today i grabbed 40. Realizing that season 9 wont be for a while I need something to keep me happy lol. Am I missing anything from season 8? Heard there was a story somewhere where Buffy goes to rescue Xander from Dracula. Not sure but I would like all of season 8 in its entirety. Also, I watched 1-5 of Angel. Hated how it ended but love that it continued. What do I need to buy? I'm so poor right now I'm only looking for stuff that directly ties with the continuation of the show. I heard about Angel after the fall. Its like 17 issues or something. Also Spike after the fall. I assume I need both of these but what else? Should I get the rest of the angel series? Any one shots I'd need to get? At the end of issue 40 today Scott Allie said to read the last few issues of both Angel and Spike from IDW. So I'm lost. I'm such a huge fan I wanna get everything I can get my hands on but can't afford anything that is its own entity and not tied with the show. So, who can help me? Thanks so much in advance 🙂

A decent forgetting spell should work.

Seriously though.

Season 8:

Season 8, Volume 1: The Long Way Home (issues 1-5)
Season 8, Volume 2: No Future for You (issues 6-10)
Season 8, Volume 3: Wolves at the Gate (issues 11-15)
Season 8, Volume 4: Time of Your Life (issues 16-20)
Season 8, Volume 5: Predators and Prey (issues 21-25)
Season 8, Volume 6: Retreat (issues 26-31)
Season 8, Volume 7: Twilight (issues 32-36)
Season 8, Volume 8: Last Gleaming (issues 37-40) *Not out until July.

Season 6:

Angel: After the Fall - Volume One (issues 1-5)
Angel: After the Fall - First Night (issues 6-8)
Angel: After the Fall - Volume Three (issues 9-12)
Angel: After the Fall - Volume Four (issues 13-17)
Angel: Aftermath - Volume Five (issues 18-22)
Spike: After the Fall (issues 1-4)

Found this online; there's some stuff missing but I filled in what I could remember off the top of my head.

A huge Angel after the fall volume will be released soon, containing issue 1-17, start with that.

Then buy Spike After the fall. Then follow the volume numbers. A confusing thing though, after issue 27 (volume six contains issue 23-27 and the one shot Last Angel in Hell, might be more) the volume that should have been called volume 8 is called volume 1. I guess they re-started the numbers, even though the series is still being released (it will stop after issue 44, I think we're on 41 now).

There's some other comics (for example the series Only Human, available in it's own tpb should be read after issue 23 of the main series), but start with the list Litheran provided. It will get confusing, fast.

Btw, it's technically not a season 6. Trying to think of it as a TV season gets confusing for some. Others think that the Angel comics are more like a TV season than season 8, but I disagree.

Don't bother with the Aftermath series...its basically crap IMO but get the Lorne one-shot dedicated to Andy Hallett.

I see that you already bought a lot of season 8, and that you don't have a lot of money.
I need to learn to read more carefully.

The Xander & Dracula story is from the Tales of the vampires series (the Drac&Xander story happened before issue 12 of Season 8) which is canon-ish. Buy the TPB, it's a great read. Actually, no, buy the Tales hardcover that's released this or last month, it has Tales of the vampires and Tales of the slayers (including the Tales of the vampires one shot "The thrill", that ties into season 8 as well).

Then there's the web comics that are available free online: Harmony Bites (read after issue 20) Carpe Noctem part 1&2(after issue 21), Always darkest(after issue 4). There's another Harmony web comic, but I can't recall it's name. I think those are all the webcomics.

What you really need to read from Angel is Angel after the fall and the Spike series that's being released right now (8 issue total, I don't think it has a name, just "Spike", but don't confuse taht with another TPB named Spike or Spike Omnibus). You can even skip Spike after the fall and the post-After the fall comics in the main series. I think it's unclear if post-Angel after the fall will be mentioned all that much in season 9, so maybe you don't have to read past Angel after the fall.

To sum up, you need to buy:

*Angel After the fall premiere edition (not sure if it has all the extras the individual hardcover do, or if it's less expensive)
*Spike series (make sure you get the one with 8 issues, maybe wait for the TPB or hardcover)
*The free web comics since they're free.

And if you get more money, buy the other volumes from the Angel main series ("season 6"). Then there's lots of Angel one shots and mini series too, but I think they're all optional, I guess. The Tales hardcover is according to me optional. It adds to season 8, but you can do without it for now.

Things you NEED:
Buffy Season 8: 1-40. Litheran gives a nice little outline of all these.
For Angel it gets a little more confusing. If you're looking for strictly-canon comics only get Angel: After the Fall: Issue 1-17. As someone already said, there is going to be a huge book that contains all 17 issues produced by Whedon and written by Brian Lynch.

Besides these you don't technically need anything else. But in case you're wondering, here's what I, personally, own and consider canon:
Willow: Goddesses and Monsters One-Shot
Tales of the Vampires: The Thrill
Riley: Commitment Through Distance, Virtue Through Sin One-Shot
Spike: After the Fall (not technically canon, but it's written by Brian Lynch and doesn't really contradict anything)
Angel: After the Fall Epilogue: Become What You Are #23
Angel: Drusilla Part 1 #24
Angel: Drusilla Part 2 #25 (Angel Issues 23-25 are all in the same boat as Spike:AtF. Not technically canon, but written by Lynch, and doesn't contradict anything)

This isn't counting any other canonical comics, that don't happen in the same time as S8/AtF though... 😱 *cough*Fray*cough*

I forgot to tell you why to buy the Spike 8 issue mini series currently running. Even though the canon can be questioned, it's suppose to explain some events of season 8.

So:

*Angel After the fall premiere edition (not sure if it has all the extras the individual hardcover do, or if it's less expensive)
*Spike series (make sure you get the one with 8 issues, maybe wait for the TPB or hardcover)
*The free web comics since they're free.

And the rest of the main series might be relevant to season 9.
The last issues are suppose to lead up to the Twilight thing in season 8. But I can't remember where I read this.
