Can anyone tell me why this never took off?

Not sure. I did enjoy it though. They should bring it back. SMG doesn't want to play a live action Buffy but maybe she'd do the voice work for it though. Solves the aging issue of the actors. But it better not be like the comics.

Probably, Joss either couldn't get financial backing for the project, he wasn't interested enough in the idea, or both. Despite the success of shows like "The Simpsons," setting up a prime time animated series has to be tough, and "Buffy," in any format, wouldn't qualify as a Saturday morning show.

Even if Sarah didn't want to do the voice, there are enough specialists available who would be able to imitate her voice so closely that no one would ever know the difference. That's what happened in the video game, "Chaos Bleeds." All of the regulars except Sarah participated, but Buffy was a ringer.
 
I think a version of Buffy where she could jump up to an upper balcony as shown in the first trailer and beat off a dragon at altitude would be a little too ridiculous even for a Saturday morning cartoon. Part of the appeal of BtVS is that she was pretty evenly matched with her adversaries. There would be no drama if she could just steamroll over them as shown here (and I never got the appeal of Superman either, for the same reason). I doubt there would be a worthwhile group of stories to tell that would last for several seasons. The appeal of Buffy is that she had relationships as well as responsibilities and none of them proved to be easy.

Sad to say, the time when this concept, even with these deficiencies corrected, could have been sold to a network has passed.

Agreed, but that's certainly no worse than some of the things that she wound up doing in Season 8, so maybe Joss actually did develop that story line, he just used a different medium, comic books, to present it. It would certainly be much cheaper that way.
 
I just wanted to throw in that sometimes working with limitations is much better. The comics are proof of that to me (so far). With anything and everything possible in the comic form, the writers can literally make anything happen and make the characters do anything, which means they sometimes get too ambitious and make silly and ridiculous things the norm. The focus sometimes becomes "what unbelievable things can we make happen" as opposed to focusing on the little things more, like character interactions and development, because realistic limitations force you to.


If they made an animated series of the Buffy, I think I would only like it if they stuck close to the format of the show and didn't deviate too much from the formula.

Because it sucked? I lasted two minutes and could take no more. I cant recall Buffy EVER wearing black lipstick. But the voice acting was horrible. It was just lines being read with no emotion. I couldn't take more than two minutes, no way would I watch an entire episode, let alone a season. That and the fact it was a reboot.
 
Oh I just rewatched this. And yea it's not good. The voice acting is bad, the only character that feels the same is Xander, every thing else is off and ridiculous. Whats with the dragon? Yea I'd be down for an animated version if it was more like the show. Just because it's a cartoon, doesnt mean it should be "cartoony" and over the top. Something more real.
 
Its pretty shit based on that clip anyway. The voice for Buffy was just too perky. Willow and Xander's was fine, but it didn't really make sense that it was Willow concerned with her fashion and the idea of it clashing with Cordy's just doesn't fit the character. Thought Giles voice was pretty lame. The jokes were pretty weak too. I am up for an animation version but it would need to be better than that.

Uhmm. You do realise that ASH voiced this? Infact unless I'm remembering wrong except for Buffy they're all the original cast.

I don't think AH and ASH's voices sound so great coming out of cartoon characters. Nick's works well enough. As much as I love them, voice actors tend to have a quality to their voice and inflections that sounds good in animations, I'm just not sure they have it. Then again, Buffy's voice does absolutely nothing for me either.
The "comedy" is just awkward.
 
It just doesn't work. It all just feels contrived and awkward. I think the show really only works in the tv show format; with real people.
 
I think a Buffy cartoon would take off if the animation, story, and acting were good. So much potential to bring the now generation into the folds of Buffy.
 
It doesn't seem like there's a point to these few minutes. Just an example of what Buffy might look like in animated form, to show off dusting effects, etc.
SMG will always be Buffy to me, but if the animations were canonical with the original series I'd support a cartoon format.
