I noticed that in the opening credits of "Normal Again", the name of this episode's writer is the name of Joss' personal assistant. And I know the name from the ending credits of every episode. Can it be that the writer of this brilliant episode is Joss' personal assistant?
 
Hmmm.. I doubt a bit, that Joss didn't help write this episode at all.. It stinks of his work. Possibly, he let his assistant write most of it, and he just coreected it, and wrote some more so it fit to the characters.
 
david gutierrez is one of the people in the commentary for "normal again" right? they usually get the writer and director or some combination.

Yup and I bet I can tell you the story.

Boy becomes assistant to director to help him with a step up in the writing world.
After years of getting Tea and/or Coffee for Joss, he asks him to give him something.
Writer does so, Joss is impressed so gives the guy a chance.

It happens ALL the time. Its not a new story or even a particularly interesting one BUT its a way to get in the business and looking at what he does now (writes/produces Without a Trace) he has done well.

Which is the job of the Head writer on any show.

You don't think the episodes you see on screen, even for the likes of Fury and Espensen haven't been looked over and even corrected by Joss.

He is the one who HAS to know everything about an arc so that he can keep the continuity.
 
That's one helluva big break for an up and comer. It was definitely one of the more intriguing episodes of the season.
 
i noticed it, and have with other show... someone who on the extras is a runner in series 1 by like series 6 is a manager of something... it was on Bad Girls btw

Yeah, but for Normal Again? Was Joss credited as well? Because, this was a fairly canon shattering ep, that they had in the works for a while. Although, maybe this gives an explaination for why the "previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Oh, woops, she was in an institution! Sorry about that!" thing happened.

Joss is ALWAYS credited because he was the head writer.
I don't understand what you think the chap writing this episode did that was so canon shattering?

The idea that Buffy told her parents and thought she was a bit deranged isn't breaking any canon, ok after 6 years we could expect to have heard this BUT Buffy rarely talked about her time before and I am sure its not something that the family want to discuss.

As for had it in the works for a while, again I say - I don't understand what you think happened here.

This episode had to be written by someone. They are all allocated out. Joss gave the guy a chance and this was the result.

I mean the fact that they left it open-ended as to whether any of the 'verse was actually real or not. And I know Joss is always credited as head writer, but is he not often given a writer's credit as well? Or is that only on episodes he himself has written entirely?

I agree with you. From what we saw in the episode it is far more plausible for us to believe it was left open-ended than to assume it must have been an alternate reality, that scenario would be fan wank and not the purpose of the ep.

I think you are looking too deep into that episode.

It isn't left open ended with a possibility that its real, its at best an alternate reality where Buffy was passing back and forth.

Anyway this isn't the thread to discuss what the episode means, what happened here was the guy wrote it WITH Joss approval amd he borrowed the gimmick used in EVERY show that has done this and left a small seed of doubt about the reality. Honestly speaking I get so bored of that cliche that I would HOPE Joss had no part in it, but I assure you nothing will hit the screen without him casting an eye over it, especially from someone new to writing the show.

Doesn't matter if this was Normal Again, Hush or Bad Eggs, it needed a writer, it got one and Joss, if I have my timing correct, didn't have the amount of free time he did in earlier seasons as he was doing Angel too and this was around the time of Firefly.

Hear, hear. I agree... It doesn't matter to me in the least who writes the eps as long as they're good and stay true to the characters and storylines.
