So vampires have no heart, no functional organs, no breath. But they have nearves? It seems that every time I watch Buffy stake a vamp it seems to hurt them. Or, for example when Darla shoots Angel in "Angel". She says "Don't worry, bullets can't kill a vampire. They can hurt like hell...." Am I missing something? If their bodies are dead then the nearves that deliver pain signals should be too? ::huh1::

Although there kinda dead, I don't think they are completely dead. Other wise there bodies would have started to decompse and they wouldn't have use of their brains or motor skills.

It really is undiscussed and widely unknown in the Buffyverse how these things work, for instance, Angel having a son.

i think the brain still funstions, cause they obviously think, but maybe its more like how amputees feel phantom pains, the vamp remembers that a bullit should hurt, so it psychosematically does.

On a scientific note, if the brain and the3 nervous system still work then they would feel pain. Pain is generally a reaction to trauma transmitted through nerve endings through pathways in the body, using both chemical and electrical reactions. This article by the Mayo Clinic describes pain and what happens in the body.

My point is that if the brain works then we can assume that the nerves do to. But the fact that they have no blood disputes this. Therefore I believe that what really happens is that since the demon "takes over their body," it can feel pain. Since a vampire is not human, rather it is a demon.

How's that, two contradictory hypotheses to stew over.

Maybe this is a really stupid question, but don't vampires have hearts? I mean, I know they don't have beating hearts like humans. But the thing about putting a stake through the heart, does that mean "through the place where the heart whould have been if they still had one"..? Or do they have a heart in some way..?

I think they do have a heart... but it just doesn't beat. I can't see why they wouldn't have all the internal organs... they just don't work. I could be wrong.

We know that vamps have hearts from "Hearthrob" when James sells his heart to make himself invincible temporarily, and the ifrst ep with Gwen when she kick-starts Angel's heart for a moment. the fact that they do have some functioning organs is supported by the fact that Connor did have to reside somewhere before he was born and they can process alcohol, it just takes more to get them drunk.

I'm pretty sure vamps do have blood, otherwise the whole siring ritual which requires the siree to drink the sires blood after being drained of his own would be kind of impossible.

I haven't watched Angel so I don't know much about the heart-thing..

But ok, they have hearts, and they have blood (we've seen that many times).. But their hearts still don't beat?
("If my heart could beat it would break my chest")

Yeah, no heart beat. They do have blood, but they don't...bleed properly, because their heart doesn't pump the blood through the wound. In Grad 1, they make a fuss about Angel's bleeding stopping after pulling out the arrow, but I think that's a continuity glitch...

And for the record, they can and do breathe (which is how they speak and smoke) out of habit, more than anything I think, but I think Giles mentioned at some stage that it spoils the air. (Which is why Angel can't do CPR) They're also room temperature, making Buffy's fondness for Vamps a little icky...

Never thought about it but your right, they must be able to breathe to smoke.. So they just breathe once in a while when they feel like it? They don't need to do it?

(Does it "make sense"..? Do Joss and the others know exactly what vampires are like, how they work..? (Or is it just people like us who are trying to make everything fit together?) The ting is I don't even care if it is possible to explain everything. I think it is fun to try to do that but it doesn't really matter to me if there are some things that don't make sense, that doesn't fit together..)

Yeah, like you say, it doesn't matter at all, but it is fun to colour in the blanks.

After they run or something, they start to hyperventilate, which is fair since we don't want the actors to, well, die in the pursuit of continuity. The way I see it is... the body just keeps behaving more or less as before out of reflex. It sweats, it breathes, it's hair and nails grow and presumably it can digest food if need be. (Spike's weetabix. And God bless Jaffa Cakes by the way, Americans don't know what they're missing) But the demon prevents it rotting or the blood congealing, and the intake of blood (and with it, life)just keeps resetting the corpse to more or less to the way it was when it died (like Spike's spine repairing itself) So the breathing doesn't serve any real function, but it's a hard habit to drop, and useful for speech. And since the body is essentially frozen at the point just after death, the nerve endings should still be live.

What would frustrate the "Reset" idea is vamps with scars. Spike's scar in his eyebrow, and Kakistos' eye were both received after they became vamps. The only way I could work around that would be if the wound was inflicted with a special weapon, or by a Slayer's hand or something, but that's getting into very speculative territory...

And by the way, how does Angel shave...?

That's how I think about it too. The still have everything human left (except the soul of course), and get all the demon stuff too.

Hm.. But if scars caused by a slayer would stay, both Angel and Spike would have had a lot more scars then they do.. After all their fights with Buffy. I don't think we will find a logic explanation to that..

So they can eat food, but they can't live on it.. But what really happens if they don't get blood in a while..? They just "starve" to death?
So the immortal-thing basically only means that they don't get older, right..?

(I guess he has done it for so long and learnt how to do it without a mirror..??)

Spike tells Giles that Vamps get emaciated if they don't drink, but not that they die. In fact, the make up department went to great lengths to demonstrate it in Pangs. Spike looks rough...

They won't starve to death...they note this in Tomorrow when Justine & Connor sink Angel into the ocean....I believe.
