Canon?

OK I looked around and couldn't find a similar thread to this. The intention of this thread is to promote awareness of all types of canon in the buffyverse. so far I have thought of the following:
1. Every Buffy episode
2. every Angel episode
3. The comicbook Fray
4. the comicbook Tales of the slayers
5. The original BTVS film

These are the one I am aware of but my knowledge is kind of limited, although I do know there is an angel comic book which was written by Joss Whedon, which I guess makes it canon.

Any others you can think of?

I'm thinking it must be as incidents from the film are mentioned in the TV show...Buffy leaving LA because of a certain gym-related fire springs to mind...

but there was no fire in the movie...

It's a while since I saw the film, I may be confusing the fire thing with something else 😉 but I'm pretty sure that Buffy leaving LA as a result of events in the film is referenced at least once in S1 of the show...
 
Christopher Golden adapt Joss Whedon's original script as a Dark Horse graphic novel called "BtVS: The Origin" to fit in more with the series. Buffy was younger than in the film (and looked more like SMG), the Watcher was closer to the one seen in "Becoming Pt. 1" and ended with the fire that was mentioned in the series. I would consider that to be more canon than the actual movie.

The movie is a Joss Whedon project, so yeah it can be considered canon in that aspect, but the whole reason Joss did the show was because he was unhappy at how the movie turned out.

Growing up in the 90's, I love the movie, but can understand how people see it as cheesy.
 
I don't see the movie as canon, 'cause of Joss being unhappy with the result there. I don't think the series is a continuation to the movie, but instead like the same tale but in a different way. I haven't read the novel "BtVS: The Origin", but to me that seems more canon..
 
If the movie was canon then wouldn't stuff like Slayer birthmarks, premenstrual cramp vampire detection, and flying vampires also be canon?

I can't remember do vampires dust? What about the flighty, self-involved personality of Joyce, is that canon?

With Fray, Joss has promised to explain the multiple slayer/single slayer discrepancy between BTVS and Fray, so I can see Fray being canon, but he's disavowed the movie.
 
The movie may have been done by Joss but doesnt put it in canon. As already mentioned, Buffy was already a senior in the film, vampires could fly and didnt even vamp out if I remember correctly. And not to mention Buffys orignal watcher changed from The movie to the series.

But it wouldve been nice if we saw some of Buffys past foes and friends from her time in LA(besides whats his name from season2)

and with Fray, Joss already started to put Frays future into Buffy with the introduction of the Syth
 
Just the actor changed really...I believe he's still credited as "Merrick"...Same thing as the Buffy from the movie and the show...
 
ya I meant the actor, but even in his brief appearance in Becoming, his attitude seemed different from that of the movie.
 
I saw the film years ago, before the series and just assumed it was canon because Joss wrote it but obviously its not, thanks for the help guys
 
I've read BtVS: Origins (you all should; it's really good) and I really think it should be considered canon, because it fits perfectly with everything said on the TV-show and it's a good replacement for the movie.

How about the other comics, apart from ToTS and Fray, are any of them canon?
 
The TOTS COMIC is part of the Canon as it is a "Joss Whedon Production.

The books of stories entitled TOTS are NOT canon as they were not endorsed by Whedon.
