Can't decide how I feel about Illyria

On one hand, she's ****ing awesome. She's such a badass and has some great lines, particularly in Not Fade Away, and I can't help but like her. On the other hand, she is responsible for Fred's death, and I love Fred - she's so adorable. So I kind of hate Illyria for that, and can't really decide how I ultimately feel about her. I'm kinda confused about how Team Angel feel about her as well, for the same reasons.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

If they wanted to do away with Fred completely, they'd have her give birth to Illyria, fall into a coma and die at some point. 😛

So fear not, Fred might resurface at some point.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I remember reading somewhere that Fred would be able to resurface if Angel had been picked up for another season.

I know right? I didn't like her at first too, but she grew on me. I prefer her to Fred anyday. 😛 It would be good if they both existed and they're like weird twin sisters. If I was Joss, I would do that in S6. But in reality, I just think Amy Acker was still in the series and call it a victory. 😉

I really like Illyria, but I do understand why some by find it hard to like her or have mixed feelings about her.

As far as team Angel goes, I'm sure that hate that Fred is no longer with them, but Illyria is in Fred's body so they probably have a hard time looking at her without seeing Fred. It's sorta like Angelus in season 2 of Buffy, Buffy wasn't able to kill Angelus at first because he had the face of her lover.

My theory is that Fred's soul was not destroyed, but 'consumed' in the sense that it became a part of Illyria, which is what caused her to show humanity and emotion as she did. My analogy is to think of it like paint - Illyria in her true, original form is blue, while Fred is red. When Illyria took over Fred's body, the two colours mixed into purple - neither one nor the other but a sort of fusion of both. The original Illyria's consciousness, thoughts and personality with Fred's body, soul and memories, creating a new hybrid character with parts of both of them in her. This would fit in with the plan for season six I read about, in which they start to split and eventually become revert to the two separate original beings, and seems to make sense, so I like to think that's what happened.

Still feel a bit unsure about how to feel about it all, though.

I love Illyria! I think she was just what Ats had been missing - a really badass chick! It would have been cool if the series had kept going and Fred could reappear, that would have given it an extra dimension.

Fred was kind of blah to me. She was cute, but I didn't really care for her that much.

I kind of preferred her to Fred by that point. Don't get me wrong, Fred was a good character, but she wasn't as amazing as some people make her out to be. It was great getting to see more of Amy's range as an actress.

I just want it to be said that it wasn't exactly Illyria that truly killed Fred, it was Knox. Illyria said in an episode (forget which one) that she didn't even want to be wakened from the deeper well. This was something that Knox wanted initially and so, Fred was a casualty because of his actions. I don't think that Illyria would have actually chosen to do this on her own.

Good point. Also, he's the one who CHOSE Fred.

Exactly!

I don't hate Illyria for taking over Fred, but I despise Knox more than word can say. The guy was in love with Fred and thought she was good enough to be worthy of inhabiting Illyria. 'Oh sure, I'm in love with her, so I'm going to pick her as the host of an old hell-goddess. Her soul will be consumed and she might disappear in the process, but hey! It's for the greater evil, I'm making her a favour!"
So, that's not really the question, but I hate Knox so much!

Which mean I don't hate Illyria for being the reason why Fred disappeared.

I actually like Illyria.
I disliked Fred until...well, I pretty much started loving her a few episodes before she died. But I didn't have any difficulties to like Illyria. Maybe because Fred had too much those "Boo I'm so fragile and innocent" vibes, while Illyria kicks ass since the beginning.
She annoyed me a bit in the episode Time Bomb, but otherwise, I loved to see her accomodating to her new mediocre life, and in the end, she started having feelings. And I owe her one of my favourite Angel scene ever, in Not Fade Away, when, after conforting Wesley, she stands up as Fred and punches the wizard with a hateful face, turning into Illyria again. That scene was a-ma-zing!

I kind of see her like a girl no one understands and no one really wants around, so I feel a bit pity for her. But I feel less pity than awe, as I love her fight scenes! I even think I will be her for next Halloween 😀

That's what I was thinking at first, but then what about the thing where thousands of people would die if Angel and Spike did whatever it was in the deeper well to save Fred? I thought the reason all those people would die was because Illyria would cling to all of them trying to get into a body to be resurrected in (ie. she didn't want to go back to the deeper well initially - it was only later when she discovered her army was gone and her power weakened that she decided that she would rather not have been brought back). Also, she left her army waiting in the temple for her so she must have been planning to come back.

Besides, even if she wasn't really responsible, you would think that the others would still blame her at least partially, and resent her for it. And Fred aside, Illyria was still planning to destroy mankind... that got forgiven and/or forgotten pretty quickly as well.

Not a huge deal, and it kind of makes sense I guess if you stretch things a bit, but it just bothered me a little...

THIS. SO MUCH! AND MORE.

Which, when you really look at all of this in context, it's sort of vulgar and disgusting really and I personally feel like more of the hate and blame that came about regarding Fred's death, should be hefted onto his shoulders a great deal more than Illyria's.

Which, is also another reason why when people argue that both Angel and Spike just "let Fred die," drives me absolutely bloody bonkers. They did not just let her die, they made what they felt was the best decision, at the time. Plus, I believe that the decision they made, is exactly what Fred would have wanted them to do. It was going to kill thousands of people to draw Illyria out of Fred and back to the deeper well and I think if they had chosen to go that route and save her life while killing that many people as a result, would have only served to make her feel not only guilty but come to resent the life she would have lived had it been spared and both Angel and Spike.

This way, she got to die a sort of hero, in a sense. (And I realize this wasn't the point of the thread, but I just had to say that anyway.)

Now, back to our regularly scheduled topic of discussion.

I disliked Fred until...well, I pretty much started loving her a few episodes before she died. But I didn't have any difficulties to like Illyria. Maybe because Fred had too much those "Boo I'm so fragile and innocent" vibes, while Illyria kicks ass since the beginning.

Really? I loved Fred to pieces, probably because she was the character that I best related to, ya know small town girl from Texas who was big on science - that's sort of who I am too a little bit.

But, I never really saw Fred as an "I'm so fragile and innocent," girl. I mean, we're discussing a character who fought for five years to survive in a hell dimension where they treated her kind like cattle and then had to turn around and learn how to re-integrate herself back into the normal real world, which had to be incredibly hard for her to do and not to mention, a tad bit traumatic.

I think there were times in AtS, where she definitely showed that she wasn't some wimp-ling that was always mooning over the big hero of the day that "handsome man" that saved her life. One instance comes to mind when they're all in the bar at Caritas and she'd been singing that Patsy Cline song then one thing led to another and she had that crossbow pointed right at Gunn's boy's jugular. She wasn't some little "fragile innocent" thing then. lol. I thought she was pretty bad ass, not to mention when she built that thing that decapitated that giant bug. That was pretty gnarly.

And of course, her death. I thought she was pretty damn strong and amazing then. She still had to be incredibly scared though, but I loved the fact that she was going to work the case as much as she could to the best of her abilities until she couldn't, because she wasn't going to be taken down by some monster flu since she was better than that.

I just loved Fred in general. 🙂

But, I also definitely love Illyria as well, because in a way she was sort of like Fred in the sense that, she was now stuck in a world that she had absolutely no lover and had to learn how to adapt and find her way. In short, I pretty much agree with just about everything you've said about Illyria.

That scene is so freaking epic, seriously. I loved it for everything that it was and wasn't supposed to be. Easily the best scene out of the whole episode for me, anyway. There was just something so beautifully poetic about it. Like, it was both Fred and Illyria at the same time, striking back at the demon who had caused her so much pain.

Yes, I totally thought this was incredibly digusting, insane, and mindf*cked! Thinking about it makes me want to punch some Knox so bad!

Which, is also another reason why when people argue that both Angel and Spike just "let Fred die," drives me absolutely bloody bonkers. Yeah, that was hard for them, and hard to watch them realizing they had the choice between killing thousands of people to save Fred and not do anything, letting Fred where she was. It make me hate Know even more, I even had rage tears in my eyes because that was so, so disturbing!
And it's the same with Gunn, I don't put the blame on him either, I know that if he had the slightest idea of what he had signed up for exactly, of what it would cost him, he would never, ever have done it.

Spike and Angel didn't really have the choice, Gunn didn't know what would happen. Knox knew exactly what he did, he deliberately killed Fred!

Héhé, my Fred-disliking is actually quite harsh and unjustified, I'm aware of that 😀
See, part of me knows she is strong because she survived 5 years in Pylea and had her good moments after that but...I think what really bothers me is that her attitude reminds me of some girls I know who are far from weak but use they fragile physic and cute fake attitudes so people will think "Ooooh, she's so cute and innocent". And generally, those girls get away with anything, no matter how bitchy they act, because they have such a strong "I'm weak and all cute" attitude that people don't dare telling them to piss off. I've met girls like that and I've hated it, and I happened to be one of the people who thought "oh but that girl is so cute and fragile, she can't have done that!" and I ended up backstabbed. So that's why my Fred disliking is quite unjustified, something in her reminded me of those girls so most of the time, when she had a scene I was just rolling my eyes.

But once she broke up with Gunn, she started acting really strong in my opinion. She was still cute, but not overly cute, and I remember seeing some scene and thinking "Hey, she just kicked some asses! Wow, have you seen how she hit that guy?", and we heard her more saying that she didn't need protection and she looked strong, and determined and independant, and that's when she shone as who she really was to me, while before there was just something I deeply disliked about her. And then, the more I loved her, the closer her death 🙁

OH yeaaah, you just put the finger on why I love it so much, you see Illyria and Fred striking back, like they were united in the pain, that's just so great!

And it's the same with Gunn, I don't put the blame on him either, I know that if he had the slightest idea of what he had signed up for exactly, of what it would cost him, he would never, ever have done it.

I didn't really put any of the blame off on Gunn, but I was disappointed in him though for not reading the fine print on the contract he was signing and for being so willing to sign his soul away so quickly for a high powered brain boost that ultimately resulted (without his knowing) in a really good friend's death.

Yes, Knox was behind this and he is solely to blame, and I don't blame Wesley one bit for killing him. One of my favorite things about that episode, was Angel going on about how even though they could, they weren't going to kill Knox because it wasn't for them to do, and then Wesley just turns around and shoots him dead in cold blood and Angel's all, "did you NOT just hear what I said?" I lol'ed forever, because really Angel...stop speechifying.

Knox knew exactly what he did, he deliberately killed Fred!

Yes, and then tried to say that he did all out of love. What kind of sick tormented love is that?! lol. Please NEVER LOVE me. 😉

Honestly though, I never really saw Fred displaying an "i'm all weak and cute," attitude. But then again, maybe I have my character goggles on. I don't know, I just know that I'm a lot like Fred in a lot of ways, but I still believe that even before she broke up with Gunn that she was pretty strong in some ways. Like I said, I think a lot of how she acted had to do with the fact that she'd had to spend the last five years of her life in that hell dimension and then had to learn how to re-integrate herself back into normal society. I'm sure her head was a mess all over the place.

Now, post-Gunn I think that she became infinitely stronger and I absolutely loved her more. So, I tend to agree with those viewpoints you shared. *g*

I think they were definitely united in pain, how could they not? 🙂
