[Castle] Discussion of 1.01 "Flowers For Your Grave" - Aired 3/9/09 (ABC-US)

Wow, awesome, I wasn't expecting this for another month, cant wait to see it.
 
I just watched the first episode and I gotta say I liked it. I liked seeing Nathan Fillion play someone other than a Southern Confederate type (I've only seen him in Firefly and Slither). I liked the supporting cast and the relationships that the title character had with his mother and his daughter. I liked the fact that they threw a few author cameos in there.

I didn't like the way they portrayed the incredible, shrinking, don't-blink-or-it'll-disappear thing we call the publishing industry, especially in the current economy. Most publishers are pulling or at least limiting their author tours. Most authors are lucky to fill 200 seats at a signing. Very few book launches get the red carpet treatment, even fewer authors enjoy (or suffer) name-to-face recognition, and no one signs boobs.

Also, I kind of found the premise for keeping the author connected to the NYPD to be a bit on the weak side.

All things considered, I think I'll give it a second watch. I am cautiously optimistic about this one.
 
haha...i just watched...its AWESOME! It was proper Joss humour even if it had nothing to do with Joss. In fact, the writing felt far more Joss than Dollhouse does.

Castle (with a gun to his head): Yea..cept this psycho here needs a breath mint!

I just started it, and I already love it. Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to be one of those bad people who watches it online every week because I have to be up at 6 AM and I'm too old to stay up until 11 PM to watch TV on a school night.

I agree with palabra about the writing thing, although I think that if any writer had Castle's particular mix of success, looks, charm, and ego, his/her release parties might well end up looking like that.

I like the daughter. She reminds me of me.

And I caught James Patterson's name in the credits--any idea what that's about?
 
I noticed that Castle mentioned playing poker with Patterson; I assume there's a poker scene eventually? (I just got past the "why do you read murder mysteries after dealing with dead bodies all day?" scene.)
 
Not bad but at the same time I don't see anything special with this. What can save this (and most shows like this) is that the characters/actors manage to get a hold of the viewers, and I'm not convinced that they can. I doubt Nathans charm and a few funny lines will be able to save this show. But it's not like a pilot always show the whole potential so I'm hoping for the best. Since I like Nathan they'll have a viewer in me but it's not like I count in that aspect. For the moment it's the "old": two people (one male, one female of course) have to work together even if one is clearly reluctant while there's some chemistry is going on or will happen. And the viewer is left wondering if they're gonna get together or not (will we care if they do?). Easy to watch but judged from one episode nothing that's gonna leave a mark in tv-history.


I agree that some shows like this do survive and sometimes go on for way longer than I thought they would. But at the same time there's a lot of shows like this and my guess is that most of them gets cancelled pretty fast. Haven't watched Mentalist but I personaly I liked the Bones pilot more.

from what ive seen this is the kind of show that US audiences lap up. Bones and Mentalist as an example(mentalist is a new show along the exact same lines and get 20mill viewers)
Finished it. Like it. Not something I'll stay up until 11 PM for, but definitely something I'll try to remember to watch online (when I have time).
 
Sounds like people are liking it so I might have to check it out! *Adds to long list of things to watch*

Man, no one has pointed out that Nathan is the king of adorable? I just want to take him to "Build-A-Bear" and get him a new outfit.
I was happier than I thought I'd be. The commercials were cute, but I wasn't totally sold on the idea. But, it does seem to have a better "set up" than other shows....Numbers, Crossing Jordan, other shows where "normal" people team up with the police. (Although, Numbers had a decent premise when it started too.) At least they were smart enough to make the whole freaking town fans of his before laying it on us that they said it was okay for this goofball to follow the police around.
The only thing I'd say I'd rather is if it was set somewhere else. Someplace smaller. Not NY (or even LA). I'd like Boston, San Fran, Santa Barbara (heck any other city in CA other than LA) even Chicago would have worked better.
The only sad part was that I missed YellowCrayon, but I thought about her LOTS! (I kinda crapped out on watching it with her!)

Anyway, folks who are real die-hard fans of an author will tend to recognize them, and with someone who's personality is like Rick Castle's, and who is as successful as Rick Castle, it's not unsurprising that his release parties are like that. 😉

Nathan Fillion is utterly adorable. What really carries the show is Nathan's facial expressions and comic timing, I think.

As white avenger pointed out, it does remind me of "Remington Steele," where a nobody teams up with an actual private investigator and turns out to be pretty good at what he does... she thinks he's cocky and arrogant, there's sexual tension, etc... yeah. 😀

By making all the town utter fans of Castle, it made sense that he was able to get what he wanted. The bit about it taking a week for fingerprints to get back, and whatshername's outraged comment about other people were really good and realistic I think. I like that they included that.

I think the idea for "Dollhouse" is better and more interesting than "Castle," but I found "Castle" to be more captivating and making me want to watch more. I think there was better acting/character/chemistry, etc., in the pilot for this than the pilot for "Dollhouse." I'm hoping that "Dollhouse" picks up and starts getting more of an over-arching story soon, though. 😉

It's hard not to like Nathan Fillion, the guy is brilliant.

I found the pilot enjoyable. Will watch it again for sure.
Doesn't seem that special though, but with likeable characters it can be fun to watch anyway.

I liked the daughter and the father / daughter relationship. Nice that they seemed to be so good friends.

I just watched it. I definitely thought it was okay. I'm not going out and buying Castle T-Shirts and phoning people to remind them to make sure they watch, but it was decent. Nathan was very good in this. It would be nice if this worked out for him. The guy is talented enough that he deserves to be involved in something a little more successful than Firefly turned out to be.

Sidenote: In case no one noticed, the judge in the first episode was played by Dan Castelleneta (the voice of Homer Simpson!)

I just watched the first episode on the ABC website.

I liked it. It's basically Moonlighting with elements of Murder She Wrote, Remington Steele, and crime-scene procedurals. In other words, a formula for ratings success.

A lot of the quips they gave Nathan fell flat, and some of them were downright old. ("This isn't what it looks like... okay, this is exactly what it looks like.") Nathan is definitely better with Mutant Enemy words coming out of his mouth. If the producers are smart, they'll get some of those writers to script future episodes.

There were some clever touches in there, like Castle using his mystery-writer poker buddies as an unwitting brain trust when he gets stuck on a "plot point" of the real-life mystery.

I love Stana Katic. Castle's daughter reminded me of Dawn. Susan Sullivan acually managed to do a good job with a very hackneyed role (the boozy, fun-loving, man-hungry grandma). And I liked Dan "Homer Simpson" Castellaneta in his cameo as the judge.

Also, Monet Mazur (who played Castle's publisher/ex-wife) looks an awful lot like Julie Benz. I thought it was her for a minute.

I'm pretty sure I'll be giving this show a chance.

YES! I forgot to put that in my post, but I thought that woman looked a lot like Julie Benz as well.
I enjoyed the show. It wasn't great, but wasn't bad either. It was typical Nathan Fillion humor, which is something I like. He has that big cheese factor. I'll try to keep watching, but won't worry too much if I fall behind.
 
Ok - I know that this thread is so old that no one may know this...but I just watched the first episode (yes, I know its cancelled).

I'm confused - how did the brother not know who Castle was? Weren't his two other murders purely based on setting a guy up for "copying" Castle's book murders? He went to all the trouble to pick out a guy, become familiar with his obsession, and kill two other people to look like a book murder, and he doesnt even know who Castle is? Did I miss something?
 
Yeah actually after I wrote that, I had to google it because I was so sure it was and then I wasn't so sure. Looks like I was wrong. 🙂
