Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco

Not as terrible as I'd thought it would be.

When season 5 first started I liked how they showed the Mexican wrestler with a mask in the background, I was like WTF is that, and lo there came a whole episode about him.
 
I just watched this episode for the 1st time ever a few hours ago.

It's nowhere near as bad as I expected it to be based on reviews of this episode. But, it still a mediocre episode and a filler. The best parts were the scenes involving the Shanshu prophecy.

I can't believe some people are saying this is the worst episode of the Buffyverse. This episode is better than some of the Buffy season 1 episodes.


The worst episode of Angel ever, without a doubt is "She" from season 1. If you don't agree, please slap your self. "She" was so boring and uninteresting. I almost fell asleep when I watched it. The only thing, "She" has going for it is Wesely & Angel crazy dances and Wesely being officially hired to AI.

I liked this episode, it was different and weird but pretty fun. "The Devils Hands Are Idle Playthings" wasn't a parody of OMWF, though. Futurama, as well as the Simpsons, always have a musical episode now and then. The Robot Devil didn't make them all burst out into song--rather part of the plot was that Fry wrote an Opera after acquiring the Devils hands (which replaced his "stupid fingers").
 
I thought this episode wasn't that bad, it was different.

I found it a strange tale, but, I think it's far from being the worst episode of Angel, in fact I find it strangely enjoyable, but it isn't one that I'd go back to quickly, unless I'm watching the whole season.

I think the honour of worst episode goes to the first season's She.
 
I read through all of your comments, and none of you seem to understand this episode. It is, in addition to the other things mentioned above, a parody of HP Lovecraft, specifically, "The Transition of Juan Romero" originally titled "The Cautionary Tale of Juan Romero." In this light it is a lot funnier.

Transition has shades of earlier mythologies, and we are meant to understand that Juan's heart was cut out and eaten by the Aztec God Huitzilopotchli.
 
In BtVS we had The Judge to show that Angelus was back with no humanity left in him and in here we have that demon to show us that Angel no longer had a heart of a champion.
 
Interesting, I have a slighly different take on the champion thing. The Judge proved Angelus WAS a champion, a champion of evil (which Spike wasn't). But yes, I agree with your assessment.
 
It's actually left ambiguous. While Angel was feeling disconnected, it's also more than likely that the Aztec demon warrior needs the living hearts of heroes and Angel's heart doesn't meet that requirement.

However it underscores his need to believe in himself and his mssion. He's slipping back into the nihilism he felt before he met Buffy which is dangerous if he is to give hope to others.

You're right, but they make it clear anyway that he doesn't FEEL like a hero.
 
Pretty boring episode, but the bit when Spikes telling everyone Angel attacked the old mail guy was well funny. Mexican wrestling, in fact, wrestling in general is so bloody cheesy. Oiled up men fake slapping each other lol.
