Celebrity Charity Work

Having just come back from a con where most of what Ian Somerhalder talked about was related to his charity and not about the show that he was there for, I am interested in the work other celebrities do. Also how much of what they do is for the public and how much is because they are actually interested in the cause they are promoting. These days it's so easy for a celebrity to use social media to promote a cause, and to use their fans to spread the word about something that they which to become a part of.

I don't know much about the American tax system but I do know there is a charity loophole that can be used to avoid paying as much tax.

Obviously some good does come out of celebrities promoting charities and causes, and money does get made through that.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is involved in the NoKidHungry thing, she talks about that a lot and various food challenges, school nutrition and about feeding your family well even with a small budget. (And she used to be involved with Habitat for Humanity I think)

And Eliza Dushku does ThriveGlu stuff. For... Uganda? Can't remember, but she's very active, and has been asking fans for years to donate to charity as a birthday present for her that time of the year.

Isn't Leo DiCaprio also a big charity guy? Can't recall where I've heard that though.

I dimly recall getting into a massive argument with somebody on these boards about the difference between simply giving money to charity and actively supporting a charity- and why there's an important difference.

I know SMG supported a getting kids to read thing a little while ago. She's big on family charities, kids health/literacy, very vocal.

And yeah, Eliza was really big on the whole Ebola thing when that was in the news. There was websites for pledge drives, all sorts.

Lots of actors support arts charities I guess. Save a theater or whatever, at least here in the UK.

George Clooney used to do some stuff a few years ago- but not so much now.
