How's this for a character arc: A female vampire named Darla shows up during the early days of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where it's revealed that she's the one who sired Buffy's vampire lover, Angel, who, in turn, ends up dusting Darla. Then the character is resurrected as a human on the Buffy spin-off, Angel, and is determined to turn back into a vampire before disease kills her, though she ultimately accepts Angel's desperate bid to save her soul and stay by her side until the end. Then she is transformed back into a vampire by Drusilla, and eventually becomes pregnant after a night with Angel, despite the fact that vampires can't get pregnant, and ultimately stakes herself so that their child can live.
"I really feel very blessed to have been able to go on the journey of Darla and bring her to life," says actress Julie Benz, who has recently been seen in Taken and the made-for-video George of the Jungle 2, "because she was never a character who just fed information or moved the story along. She was the story. To be in that position as an actor and be given the gift of such wonderful writing and such an amazing, epic character is incredible. I sometimes ask, "˜Is this my greatest part?'
Creatively, she is it. Very few characters span 400 years, and very few characters kill as many people as Darla has. I really think that both Buffy and Angel raised the bar for television. I think they showed you can be really creative. The one thing they don't do is dumb themselves down to the audience. They treat the audience with respect, and it proves that there are people out there who want to see quality television every day."
