So, why does everyone in the B-verse seem to have chains, or at least handcuffs? Normally, unless you happen to be hallucinating, there is very little reason to lock up a demon. And if Angel has lost his soul, there are not any chains that would hold him. Spike could have gotten out of the bath tub any time he wanted to but it would mean destroying the plumbing.

So - Buffy has both chains and cuffs. Xander was upset that he and Anya missed the chance to use the basement chains. Willow may be the exception - have to think about her. Joyce carried cuffs, which was odd, and Giles had his own plus the extra cuffs and the gun. And almost everyone wants to chain up Spike.

So? Speculation?
 
Chains are symbolic representation to the chains that bind us. So in each instance the character that is chained is suffering from a physical, spiritual or emotional crutch or deadweight. Those are the chains that they character needs to break, so it is reflected literally in the story. The character which implement chains are major character which bring about change on the show- Buffy, Giles. Xander laments not being able to use his chains; he was ineffectual at creating change. Joyce recognizes the need for change and can highlight that with her cuff, but she too is ineffectual at creating real change within the narrative. Plus she is more a kinky MILF with her cuffs. The Spike character was very much a chameleon changing and breaking his chains from season to season so he did need to be chained more than other characters.

It's either that or a really simple mcguffin that they thought no one would notice or care about.

But why is Willow without chains. She had to use the library cage to keep Oz from attacking....anyone. She and Tara didn't seem the chains type - I don't recall seeing any. But Willow was chained to so many needs - we need some literal chains to illustrate her difficulties.

And why do Spike and Buffy do the whole cuff thing - are they enchaining each other or releasing each other...damn good metaphor there. 😛

Giles has enough in the chain department to wonder what sort of magazines he hid under his mattress, and until season 7 he was pretty sane. Maybe mystical chocolate was what he really needed.
 
No, I think you misinterpreted the answer. The chains were used by people that could institute change ON people that needed the change. The chains were the tool of the 'healer.' Which again, is why Willow could only lock Oz in a change. She could not break his chains, only temporarily restrain the negative attributes which needed to be altered. Much like Joyce but to a larger degree.
 
My understanding is that Spike and Dru brought the oft-used chains to Sunnydale in S2 and then left them in the mansion. These are the chains that Buffy uses on Angel in s3, and are consequently used on Faith and then on Buffy (man, that sounds dirty...) so that's really just one set of chains that gets a lot of good useage.

I just assumed that these are the ones used in S7

Joyce got handcuffs off the cop in Band Candy, she didn't own them.

Xander comments that Giles actually doesn't have manacles in S4, but he either gets some by the time when Spike is held prisoner in 'Something Blue' or Buffy lends him 'hers' (that would be a wierd conversation...).
Giles probably still has them when Faith wakes up because he wants to tie 'Faith' up so she won't kill him.

Willow doesn't own any chains, but judging by 'VampWillow' very kinky standards I'd be suprised if she didn't own a pair of pink fuzzy handcuffs...

But Angel has chains right from the off in S1 (Somnubalist I think) so you have to wonder about him...Maybe its his constant insecurity about his demon, the fear of losing control.
 
Buffy gets chained to the wall by Spike in "Crush 5ABB14" and by the original watchers in "Get It Done 7ABB15" and in neither case is it welcome or successful in accomplishing what the attackers wanted to do. Chains are just what they seem to be - a way of immobilizing and dominating people. A whole lot of that seems to go on in the Buffyverse.

Even Xander gets chained to a moving structure so he can bleed by a new girlfriend. This boy attracts all the crazies.
