The authors having Buffy give Angel this line in the season where his teenage son returns all messed up, mhmm… : ”Parents are just people. Imperfect, just like the rest of us. They bring us into this world, Angel. And maybe the way they behave, and what they expect from us, is partly responsible for what we become. But I only partly.”
I enjoyed this book (again) I love the combination of the two crews so much that I don’t care all that much about the plot. Not saying that it is bad, just that I’m here for the characters, and I think the authors find their voices and combine them very skillfully. It really feels like thry want all the characters to look their best and get their moment to shine.
That said, this is supposed to take place during season 6. So it is before Tabula Rasa (Giles is here) and for Angel some time after Fredless (Cordy seems to have met Fred’s parents), and in that sense it kind of doesn’t work because Fred seems too new to the gang (just a few days out of Pylea) and the Scoobies ALL seem waaaay too well adjusted for where they are at.
However, I still like and don’t entirely care about all that. Blood and Fog went in on the Scoobies as they were and it wasn’t all they fun. So, I’m just here for the ride and the ride is fun if pretty neutral. Like most of these, nothing can upset the canon of the shows too much, so there is no character development or anything, which can be frustrating.
There were some cute Bangel moments I liked and the book overall just gave me a good feeling of when I used to love both shows and the majority of the characters.
I love all the callbacks to Doyle and that Buffy and co get to learn about him, even if its because of his evil father’s vendetta causing all this mess.
It is also a bit looking forwards towards the comics - Monster Island - and island of monsters/half-breed demons that Buffy et al end up helping/saving. Isn’t there like a monster city or something by season 9-10, and more gray zones dealing with the idea that not all demons should be killed just because they’re demons?
Anyway, hope someone else also gets around to reading this, because it is probably the best crossover novel of the Buffy-Angelverse. The combination of the teams does have a fanfic feel at times, but in a good way, as in it feels like the authors really wrote this with the fans in mind.
