Charisma Opens Up About Whedon

Benson was more surprising to me as Charisma’s pregnancy troubles on set are known, even if not in detail. I wonder if it was all a lie that Joss said there was always a place for Cordy on Btvs if Angel failed? Sad.

And it seemed like Amber had a good relationship to Whedon? But that was maybe just surface.

The only part where I, I’m sorry, do not support her is the tattoo. She is an actor committed to a series, contracts stipulate a control over actors looks for a reason. While Charisma may have needed a rosary tattoo, Cordelia did not. That lack of freedom is part of getting ridiculous amounts of money for your passion. I don’t know how Joss berated her for it, maybe it was uncalled for, but if she didn’t clear it first it was probably a breach of contract on her part.

Sarah just posted on her Instagram about it saying she is proud to be Buffy but doesn’t want to be associated with Joss Whedon. I wish I could post a screenshot but I don’t seem to be able to do that anymore.

That doesn’t surprise me, she has seemed so standoffish for years. Not in a negative way. She just seems... over it.

Bad day for Joss Whedon.

David Fury confirmed that she and Joss didn't have a great relationship years ago

I'm recalling something about her hair as well, they wouldn't let her cut it so as soon as she was allowed it was cut short

I can see hair being more of an issue than tattoos. Unless it's a honking Mike Tyson facial tattoo I don't really see the big deal. You work around it. Tyler Posey got a tattoo he wasn't supposed to in Teen Wolf so they made him keep his shirt on. Oh, the horrors.

I would apply that to the pregnancy as well. Doesn't excuse any abuse but if you're on a seasonal contract that requires you to look a certain way and work certain hours then you honour that contract and then do whatever afterwards.

The bit about avoiding agents calls is interesting, the timing around that makes a lot of difference with context.

She is an actress yes but also a woman not some barbie doll to never grow old and change. Did DB or JM get stick for growing old?

David got tons of flack both in the media and from fans for his weight gain and aging, despite it being related to his knee injury/surgery. He was absolutely getting called fat towards the end of AtS. He subsequently lost that weight for Bones.

I think hairs always been a thing for characters. Sarah had to get permission in S6 to cut her hair

This actually has a good reason. Stunt doubles have to get the same haircut. Wigs possibly have to be made. It affects the character if it's a radical visual change. It might be the actor's style or change of image, but it may not fit the role.

It sounds that you are blaming the victim here 🙁

If your contract says ”don’t change your looks” and you sign it, then you go and change your looks, you are not a victim in that circumstance. You are someone who is in breach of a legal document you signed and read.

Then fired her, but harassing her is never ok. No matter what.

Having read a lot of contracts I would say that the avoiding agents made sense. A lot of contracts do have clauses regarding pregnancies, specifically about the time in which the studio needs to know about it. If it turns out that the production knew about a pregnancy but didn’t let the studio know in good time, the production does not get the insurance to cover the costs associated with this. If they didn’t know, it is more debatable who gets what.

So Joss avoiding calls is the one thing that would make sense to me, because then he could claim he didn’t know (basically throwing CC under the bus) so that they could get money for her abscence/re-writes etc.

And this affirms why S4 of Angel turned out the way it did (and why I feel Xander truly is Joss' avatar)

In the years since discovering those details, I had a feeling there was a lot more.

Agree, people excusing him only are contributing to the problem. It's sad. I wish people would stop finding fault in the victims. It's not their fault. He's the one doing it.

I wonder if AH, EC, MT and ED will release anything, MT and ED were working on the show while they were still minors.

He didn’t fire her for the tattoo though. And no harrassing is not ok. I never said that.

But when you sign a contract you have some responsibilities too, that Whedon was a jerk doesn’t make Charisma a flawless saint. The world isn’t black and white.

Michelle has said something on Instagram about knowing the truth behind the scenes and Joss being inappropriate.

Uhu? When? Now? can you post it? He's a horrible person.

It's simple. He can come out and say that the tatoo was a breach of contract. Speculating what she might have done to deserve his harassment only empowers him and takes away her courage to speak up. That's why victims don't come forward.

Michelle on Instagram has been pretty damning

‘Thank you @sarahmichellegellar for saying this. I am brave enough now as a 35 year old woman.... To repost this. Because. This must. Be known. As a teenager. With his not appropriate behavior.........’

Then posted underneath saying ‘you are my rock’ (I’m assuming she means Sarah) ‘we win by surviving’

I cannot say I am surprised. Hollywood has always run on who you don't piss off. People who want careers have had to shut up about some deep, dark horribles, particularly female people. From the things she barely alluded to, and from everything we saw on screen, I knew she had gone through some horrible things. Her last arc on Angel showed the massive disrespect and ruination toward her and her career that was intended. Every other role she's had after that was tainted by that history.

Until you're an established top drawer actor, you cannot pull off the 'Full Monty monster' and continue in a career. That goes double for a woman. Her career ended in that bed with Connor and was unrecoverable. Perhaps now, with time and change, she might be able to build something new. I wish her joy and success. I'm grateful she has been able to be open and validate others who have spoken.

It is funny.. no, sad. Joss was so vindictive and egotistical he actually killed the entire series because he had to 'get' Charisma for daring to be human.

I hope the world is changing. Humans aren't but maybe the lies aren't so completely concealable anymore.

The fact that Amber Benson came out and supported her only strengthened what she had to share.

and now Sarah!

I think the brown stuff has just hit the swirl bits...

This! People should stop asking what she did to deserve that treatment! So sad that it keeps happening, making excuses for abusive behavior because she's not a saint and she should have done something.
