Charisma Opens Up About Whedon

I have no problems watching Smallville, which has Alison Mack (who was second in command of a sex trafficking cult) as a main cast member for 9 seasons, watching Buffy will not be an issue for me even if it turns out Joss actually sexually assaulted MT as a teenager.

I can still enjoy a show while hating some of the people who were involved with it, doesn't mean that I support their actions.

Yeah, I must say, all I want to do is watch BtVS right now and relive the magic of the show. That, or the cat lawyer on Zoom.

Agreed, there was still a fantastic team of writers and a cast that appears to be standing in support of each other. They were the ones that brought my favourite characters to life. It won’t stop my love of the show.

I re-watched all of BtVS in Lockdown 1.0 and spent many quarantine hours watching panel shows. The more I watched, the more I worried I was ruining the show for me (like an adult returning to Disney World, when your memories were made as a child)...

When I watched the Paleyfest 2008 panel, this moment stuck out. I just couldn't help but notice how JM was almost sucking up to Joss? And then NB (or JM? But I think NB) said the "you didn't even write most of them" comment, which I thought was interesting - particularly the reactions from others!
JM has also said at Comic Cons that he would only work on another Buffyverse show if Joss was running it. It made me wonder if actors were scared to say anything different and accepted Joss was 'CEO' and therefore had to revere him in a way. And actually, when I think about any job in the professional world, people wouldn't criticise their previous employer to a new employer or indeed in any public space. People have to remain professional. Particularly in show business where, as someone here pointed out, actors are replaceable. I've worked for a few egotistical CEOs to whom we have to defer, smile and nod along, regardless of our true feelings...

I think back to Joey in 'Friends' having that fateful interview after which he was killed off from 'Days of Our Lives.' Watching / reading about BtVS Comic Cons, panel shows and behind the scenes going-ons, Kai Cole's article has disillusioned me somewhat with Joss.

*Controversial opinion* I have been thinking this since last summer, but didn't want to say, as I feared the backlash (which to me confirms why CC and others stayed quiet until there was/is strength in numbers) but... I don't think Joss is that much of a genius.
I never thought this at the time of watching, or when at uni, but in the last year, I have started to doubt that Joss set out to make a feminist show. I think the premise of the show was indeed to have a girl walk down an alleyway, face up to a monster and kick its ass, as Joss said, but I think the original foundation was as simple as that. Plus, that the monsters would represent daily struggles in life. I think Joss liked the 'cute/hot geek' girl too, and wanted to popularise that archetype / trope (note the first actress cast as Willow) hence the unusual 2 female: 1 male line up. I think the show evolved to have a feminist message and many writers contributed to that.

Regarding when CC tried to tell Joss about her pregnancy, in an interview a while ago, it does seem like she tried to very early on -
.
If he did indeed ask, "Are you planning on keeping it?" then it would safe to assume it was < 12 weeks in, and most of the time employers are told at 3 months+?

With regards to MT, my first thought wasn't paedophilia. To me it sounds like he was quite unprofessional and bullying (perhaps with "jokey" comments) and people just had to awkwardly laugh along/tolerate it. As with many CEOs, often people feel they can't disagree/speak out until their financial stream is secured elsewhere. Obviously we don't know for sure, but my take is that MT's "not appropriate" is vague because the behaviour was just close to the bone and uncomfortable. Like an elderly granddad making 'old-fashioned' comments, to put it euphemistically.

I did regret going into the background of the show, behind its magic for me, and it did make me notice that SMG had distanced from the show, BUT, that said, I don't think it takes away from the series. I firmly believe that the actresses were on that show for the right reasons, because they believed in the empowering message it brought to fans. SMG said herself that a fan award meant more to her than any Grammy and I believe her words. The actors can talk about the work they did because they believed in it. And that can be separate from the workplace politics or how it is being ran. Much like we can be proud of the individual work we do in our jobs, even if we disagree with how elements are being governed from the top.

To me, BtVS is still a powerful show. I love the writing, the acting, the message and Joss' behaviour for me doesn't detract from that. I think if fans were to 'cancel it' it would be pulling away from something the actors and many writers, believed in and worked hard at. They still refer to it and are proud of it - and I hope they are still remunerated with royalties!!

During the paleyfest there is a moment when Charisma tells a story about being in a meeting with Joss acted like she was fired only to tell her about moving her to Angel. Marti Noxon quickly adds that he did the same thing thing to her! And then there is kinda awkward silence/laughter. There is laughter from the audience and one or two members of the panel because it has been taken as a joke: "Haha! Isn't Joss so funny playing tricks on his cast!" but there is also silence from members of the panel (Charisma is pretty awkwardly smiling ie gritting her teeth, Amber Benson is pretty flat and unimpressed sitting a couple of chairs down from her.)

I think this highlights how one person's joke, anger, comment, innocent action or advice can be another person's abuse. I am pretty sure that Joss didn't wake up every morning and say to himself "How am I going to torture Charisma today?" But rather had no idea that his actions were causing her harm and mental stress. Again this is a man who clearly believed his own hype and when fandom is telling you "you are a god!" its pretty easy to let it go to his head. As I mentioned in a previous comment being showrunner must be a stressful job as you are juggling so many balls. However that does not give him the right to abuse his power and treat his cast members like scum.

Just a thought - maybe MT's comment isn't regarding anything to do with her, or any actresses? Perhaps what Joss did that was "very bad" and "not appropriate" refers to other members of the show crew. Anyway. I'm just speculating. It'll all become clearer and the show will still be loved for the show's sake.

Dont forget NDA's people maybe under
According to Google, NDA's last 1-5 years. Age of Ultron came out 6 years ago, and Avengers came out 9 years ago. Firefly, Dollhouse, and everything else were obviously released much earlier than that.

She was referring to herself that's absolutely clear. She calls herself a survivor.

Delaying revealing information like this is a shitty thing to do. It has the potential to jeopardise the show and put lots of people out of work. So under those circumstances not wishing to renew that person's contract would make sense.

Not defending insults or scheduling. Not even stating that's what happened, as we don't know.

Absolutely agree. Actors are generally hired because their "look" fits a character the writer/director has in mind. Charisma was obviously chosen for her physical appeal and NOT for her acting.

Perhaps if she had gone to Joss ahead of time, letting him know that she wanted a baby, then there's a chance he would've been more understanding.

Whedon's a first class arse but his work's great. Don't cancel him because there are 1000s relying on cheques from his shows and they deserve the money.
@TriBel oh so cancelling him would mean stop watching his shows? I thought it was just meant to prevent him from working anymore. And do people still get royalties from Buffy? How many people now rely on Whedon for income?

@Spanky She said "Don't stop watching his shows...watch them as many times as you can. He's got more money than he can spend so it doesn't matter if he gets a bit more". Ignore the quotes...I'm paraphrasing. She seems to think every one involved gets royalties and there are thousands. I have to admit, I wasn't convinced by her argument. It isn't as if she doesn't have an investment in Buffy. Apparently, Buffy isn't about vengeance...it's about protecting people so just kick the demon in the head and let it go on its way.

Tony Head's had a say.

@Btvs fan Okay...thanks!

I already posted this
MT has now posted that there was a rule that Joss was not allowed in a room alone with Michelle again, which definitely hints at sexual harassment...

And MT still hasn't said what he supposedly did. Why the vagueness? Either call him out good and proper on what he did or don't say anything at all. If he did something criminal, go to the police about it. Vague comments in the court of public opinion doesn't help anybody. If you don't want to talk about something publicly, why bother bringing it up publicly? Also what's with all the full stops in weird places? It's not even a "punctuated for emphasis", it's just really bad grammar.

MT needs to elaborate. People don't know what Whedon did because she hasn't said what he did, she's being vague and allowing people to draw the own (and quite possibly incorrect) conclusions. If he was inappropriate with her in a sexual manner, she needs to say that. She doesn't need to go into a full play by play detail, but she needs to elaborate what she means by his inappropriate behaviour. He could've cornered her in a room on her own and yelled at her to the point where she was left in floods of tears which would've been inappropriate behaviour on his part and would fulfil the "he's not allowed alone in a room with her again" especially if she felt scared of his reaction because she was a teenager and he was the big head honcho at the time. She's baiting with "man", "teenage girl" and "inappropriate behaviour" yet hasn't actually said he was sexually inappropriate with her.

This is beginning to feel a little bit of a witch hunt now. People have scented blood and the feeding frenzy is starting for anyone who feels wronged by Whedon in the past.

Wow. Thanks. Went to her page first and didn't see it. The comment sounds so much like the first one from yesterday I questioned the authenticity. Because you know... people can edit just random screencaps.
here is the link for anyone else that must verify sources.

LOL I know!! that's exactly. Why. I thought. It. was faked.

She's edited it several times adding little bits in, but yes, I think it's meant to be emphasis
Michelle is jumping on the bandwagon for attention. I hate attention seekers. Gawd.

When I get back from shopping, I'm going to troll her.
