Charmed better than BtVS and why:

WOW, i like Charmed, but not more then Buffy.

Chasin Cordelia i think the difference between watching a show over 7 years and watching one over three months is that one you are given time to digest and even allowed to forget about it, but if you watch it continuously there is a chance of growing bored even if you like the show.

Kinda what i am gonna say
Watching 144 episodes of a show at 40 minutes an episode over three months for someone who is not a fan to begin with is far too much in one go.
Heck i couldn't even do that now, and i love the show.

to fully appreciate the greatness of this show you need the time between the episodes to analyse what you have seen, anticipate what is going to happen, experience the build up of expectation on your own, and being able to discuss it while its new and fresh with others who are seeing it with a new fresh perspective.

Plus, as you are a Charmed fan, you will have read many different degrees of arguments based around this paricular show that have coloured your opinion, even if you say no, you will have done that.

So there is a big difference between watching a Show all at once and watching it over the course of 7 years.

Yeah, cause Hannah was so much more important to the show.

Ditto that. And whilst we are on the subject, who in gods name was Sandra? Furthermore Dan was only eye candy and written to produce a dichotomy with Leo as far as I can see.

I watched every episode of both shows, and unlike you, as they aired, not in a marathon DVD viewing session. By design, Buffy is a more intelligent show than Charmed. Charmed is not meant to ask the big questions in the same way as Buffy. It is not meant to have intricate plot lines. Charmed is supposed to be a show that people can pretty much sit down and watch an episode and not have to have necessarily seen all the others to get what's going on.

🙂

Agree, agree, agree.

I've also watched almost every Charmed season (I think I am lacking on half of season 6, but blame that on a baby!) and I can't really see how there can be a reasonable argument made that it is a better show (that IS the title of your thread, right? Don't want to be accused of suggesting you think one is superior to the other, so I'll be pedantic and quote you ad verbatim)) Don't get me wrong, I'm still watching Charmed every week (I'm a big fan of Piper myself, being a bit of a control freak and a mother she speaks to me on many levels 😉) but it isn't as clever or metaphorical, and it has poached many Buffy themes, although, there really is no such thing as a truly original idea, as the DaVinci Code court case proves. That whole Cole arc was a version of Angel/Angelus for a start. More than once the stories have if not mirrored exactly, certainly been influenced by Buffy storylines.

I agree with the earlier post that Charmed is about adults but aimed at younger audiences, and that this is the opposite of Buffy's appeal. Also, the changes in Charmed production, from 'demon of the week' through large arc's back to a middle ground, and changes in executive producers left some viewers unsatisfied with the overall direction of the show, but then Buffy had similar problems (I'm thinking Season 6 and Marti in particular here, although I loved it) However, the overall impression I have (and many researchers in the textual analysis of cult media agree) is that the hyper-diegesis and intertextuality are really at a peak in Buffy. And Charmed may make attempts at this, but it doesn't cut the mustard. In Buffy there's like... depth.

In other words, the reason Buffy is better is because of its endlessly deferred narratives (some of which have metaphorical connections with the real world, like the ramifications of teenage sex etc,) but which also exist within its own universe, i.e. the Buffyverse - the episode, season and crossover story arcs, and the cultural references which exist both within and outside of that universe, in real life and in other fictional media, references to 'spider senses tingling' or 'to go postal' for example. This is what makes watching something like Buffy become so addictive to its fans. Trying to 'get' all the subtle cultural references, picking up on hooks to previous episodes or seasons, melding the universe across shows - it adds value to being an avid fan, and the more you watch the more you get. I just don't get that with Charmed, and I watch 2 hours on reruns a day as well as having seen seasons as they are aired (ah, the joys of motherhood!) Furthermore, on Buffy this is all achieved with great wit and catchy patterns of speech. Which is why so many of us end up speaking all Slayer-slangy, because it's embedded in our psyche! Plus it's secret Buffy nerd code.... you can spot another Buffster as long as they are in earshot (no pun intended).

To summarise.... Buffy ROCKS! Plus there's a lot of Britishness in it, which automatically makes it funnier. I mean, who didn't ROTFPTL withe the 'Welcome to the Nancy Tribe' speech. Classic TV at it's best 😀

**walks off tossing some kerosene on the flames**

and... BTW... All Hail Joss! We are NOT worthy!

Brilliantly said!!! I'm very impressed!
I have seen all of Charmed, granted not when it first aired (though I am watching S8 now). Mostly I watched out of boredom and to see what the hype was about. And it's not a bad show. But it in NO way compares to Buffy, that show really made me feel, and think.

I often get frustrated with Charmed because I feel alot of their storylines are regurgitated Buffy plots but done in a weak manner.

Also some are just plain silly (can I say Phoebe turns into a mermaid anyone?)

That mermaid one has to be one of the classic stupid television episodes of all time
I've gone through these issues a few times, but I'll give a few more attempts...

The reason I find the sister witches to have a better show is due to the simple aspect of back story involved.
Although I have watched BtVS in three months, I still have watched what you have and can find no back story to the series at all. Since you guys know Buffy more than me, perhaps you can point me in the right direction for this.
With Charmed, there is a history of the family. Charmed epsisodes like "that 70s episode", "Pardon my past", "All Halliwell's eve", and "Is there a woggey in the house" give a background to the family so we can can gain an understanding of them a bit more and find out why the characters are they way they are. I don't see that with BtVS on the level Charmed gives.
And for those that want to debate this, I feel it is important to tell how poeple get to where they are.

Next, I think folks that like Buffy are drawn in by the technical terminology given by the Buffy writers.
Example: When Spike gets chip-in-the-head, he tries to bite Willow but can't. Now I took that at face value, but according to the writers, Spike's inability to bite is a metaphor for either sexual frustration or impotence.
WTF!!!!??????
Are you honestly telling me you thought of that yourself without Whedon and his merry men sticking it in your head?
The Buffy production crew sound all big and important, and people are taken in by it.
Charmed doesn't try to do that and it's thought of as being less of a show because there's no metaphors?

And to restate what I mentioned earlier, I do not (as some have implied) "hate" BtVS. Also, I am not saying Charmed is either the greatest show ever done or it's way superior to Buffy's series.
I have tried every way possible to explain why charmed is better, and I can't do much else. You either get it or you don't.

And yes, Charmed is not what it used to be. Buffy's show at least stayed somewhat respectable and the writers ended before they ruined it.

To restate from above, if there are indeed true history episodes of BtVS let me know what they are, 'cause I have not found them. I want to at least know where Buffy came from and what her life was like pre-slayer. What was Giles like as "Ripper"...we don't get this as much as I would have liked.
Once again, not a lot of back story involved...and if there is, then tell me where it is.

If you don't know where Buffy came from you obviously haven't watched it properly!
Well again I will state my opinion... I have watched Charmed since it was first aired and have watched Buffy & Angel from the start, and I still love both.. but I do think Buffy is a better show... (my opinion) and CC, I know what you are saying... Charmed focused on the Charmed ones and their family... Buffy (hence the title) focused on Buffy... and there was family history (not as much as charmed) Buffy had a broken family.. we know about her cousin who was killed... and her dad... and Buffy's friends family , like Willow's family is jewish and Xander.. hmm dont start.. his uncle an alcoholic.. Buffy focuses more on Buffy, the scoobies and baddies.... not so much family (of course Buffy still had family and friends within the show).. because that isnt wat the show is about...

and CC

ok that kinda made me annoyed... at every show you look at, most shows have metaphors embedded within the show... so.. Charmed is more apparent/understandable as its target audience is aimed at a younger audience... Buffy is more mature?

Errrm, back story in Charmed? Like what? If you mean there are a history of Halliwell witches, then I can't see that stories of previous slayers are any less prevalent in Buffy. We know of other slayers, other watchers, the Watchers Council, an entire history of demons, what more do you want? On an hour by hour basis I would say there is equal of not more back history in Buffy. I just can't see why you can't see it.

As the show is about Buffy, the VAMPIRE SLAYER, not Buffy the vapid valley girl, the cheerleading Prom Queen (which we know is what she was, and is covered both in the film - which is part of the same narrative - and such episodes as Homecoming) it's irrelevant to the show's main thesis. After all, Charmed doesn't cover what it was like for the witches before their powers were unleashed in any great detail. Otherwise it would be called 'The Three Sisters Halliwell'. And any gaps that are left in the narrative are there to allow the reader (i.e. you) to draw their own conclusions, write the characters the way you want to, debate how they came about and why they are the way they are. Which is one of the reasons Spike getting a soul was so debated by the fans - he may have done it to try and redeem himself for the attempted rape, or to win the girl, or just plain because he had had enough of being the bad guy and wanted out. But it didn't solve the problem. But you got all that, right? Ahh, maybe not, what with not watching it as it came out, episode by episode and all.

Example: When Spike gets chip-in-the-head, he tries to bite Willow but can't. Now I took that at face value, but according to the writers, Spike's inability to bite is a metaphor for either sexual frustration or impotence.
WTF!!!!??????

Hello, how is this WTF?

Spike: I don't understand. This sort of thing's never happened to me before.
Willow: "Maybe you were nervous.
Spike: I felt alright when it started, let's try again. [Can't do it, twice] DAMMIT!
Willow: Maybe you're trying too hard. Doesn't this happen to every vampire?
Spike: Not to me it doesn't.
Willow: It's me, isn't it?
Spike: What're you talking about?
Willow: Well, you came looking for Buffy, and settled. You didn't want to bite me, I just happened to be around.
Spike: Piffle.
Willow: I know I'm not the kind of girl vamps like to sink their teeth into. It's always like 'ooh, you're like a sister to me,' or 'oh, you're such a good friend.'
Spike: Don't be ridiculous. I'd bite you in a heartbeat.
Willow: Really?
Spike: Thought about it.
Willow: When?
Spike: Remember last year, you had on that fuzzy pink number with the lilac underneath. [gives her a look. She smiles]
Willow: I never would have guessed. You played the bloodlust kind of cool.
Spike: I hate being obvious, all fangy and 'grrr.' Takes the mystery out.
Willow: But if you could...
Spike: If I could.
Willow: Y'know, this doesn't make you any less terrifying.
Spike: Don't patronize me.

How is that not about failing to get it up? It's 'smack you in the face obvious' to me.

Overexplaining shows a weakness and lack of confidence in the strength of the particular story, not that it is a better show, IMHO. The room in Buffy's narrative allows for us to make of the story what we will, and expand on the hyperdiegesis with our own story, rather like Troopers did for Star Wars fans - retell the tale from another angle, allow for the what if's? Like Superstar, The Wish, I will Remember You, The Zeppo, etc. look at things from a different perspective. It makes it OURS, not the writers.

Next, I think folks that like Buffy are drawn in by the technical terminology given by the Buffy writers.
Are you honestly telling me you thought of that yourself without Whedon and his merry men sticking it in your head?
The Buffy production crew sound all big and important, and people are taken in by it.

Errm, actually, yeah! A close textual analysis and any skills picked up from a lifetime of watching classic films, looking at comics, cult TV, hell, even plain old fashioned READING, should give you all the requisite abilities to look at the metaphor. And, FYI, it isn't just the Buffy writers who think about these kinds of things. That's kinda what deconstructing the text, close readings and interpretations mean, and why it makes Buffy special to it's fans. Might I suggest you look at Henry Jenkins 'Textual Poachers - Television Fans and Participatory Culture.' It really explains how fans make a specific text our own. If we can't explain it maybe he can. If you can understand it of course 😉

Failing that, if you don't get it, you just don't get it. End of. Go somewhere else and talk about Phoebe, Prue, Piper and Paige and their stories.

Here endeth the lesson.:dog:

The reason I find the sister witches to have a better show is due to the simple aspect of back story involved.
Although I have watched BtVS in three months, I still have watched what you have and can find no back story to the series at all. Since you guys know Buffy more than me, perhaps you can point me in the right direction for this.
I honestly can't believe that you don't think there is a back story to Buffy, To point out a bit:
Vampires: We see a load of flash backs involving Darla, Drusilla, Spike and Angel which puts them into events in history, it also creates a huge dept to the show. It creates numerous back story bits, like in Fool for Love, we get to see how Spike gets all his little scars and stuff, we see how he got his coat, we get to see two other Slayers in history one in the Boxer rebellion who says something to Spike, which is then repeated in season 5 of Angel, Fans of the shows notice this and remember back to that episode - Back story! Also we get to see Nikki who we later learn is the mother of Wood.

Slayer and Watchers: The back story for this is incredible! The history of the slayer, The power of the Slayer, The Origin, all of this has been explored, and they have done a good job at sticking to their mythology(Unlike Charmed) This paints a very vivid back story to the Both Slayers and Watcher which help us to understand Buffy and Giles and all the rest better!

The Hellmouth: This speaks for it's self, it is like a character on the show, with a history.

The Characters: All of the characters are given huge back storys, Buffy turning from bibca to hero, or Giles huge transformation. But the best part of the back story happens on the show, The characters in season 1 are completly different to those in season 7, we get to see all those layers built up to make them who they are! That does not happen much on Charmed the characters have remained pretty much the same for the last 8 years

Unfortunately you have picked one of the most obvious metaphors in the entire 7 years of Buffy, as soon as Spike gets the Chip he try's to Kill Willow and he can't, leading to dialog like "This shouldn't happen to me I'm only 120" or Willow: "It's me isn't it?" Spike "No, If I could I'd bite you right now!" - It's one of the most obvious metaphors in the show! But I think most people would have gotten allot of the others (My fav is the description of the show, Kids preparing for battle in a library) But of course there are ones that you wont pick up on.

And not all metaphors are supposed to work in your face, allot of them are ones you recognize subconsciously!

Charmed doesn't try to do that and it's thought of as being less of a show because there's no metaphors?

We study poetry in school because of there use of metaphors and abilities to reflect huge issues in a small amount of time by using metaphor, so in school we look for the metaphors, we look deep into the poem to see it's core, we can do this with Buffy as well, when you do it to Charmed you just get a sore nose because it's shallow, there is no metaphors everything is at face value. Its the type of show people watch just to watch, they don't think about it when it ends!

And yes, Charmed is not what it used to be. Buffy's show at least stayed somewhat respectable and the writers ended before they ruined it.
Just thought this should be said again 🙂

To restate from above, if there are indeed true history episodes of BtVS let me know what they are, 'cause I have not found them. I want to at least know where Buffy came from and what her life was like pre-slayer. What was Giles like as "Ripper"...we don't get this as much as I would have liked.
Once again, not a lot of back story involved...and if there is, then tell me where it is.
I'll just give a list of a few important ones.

Welcome to the hellmouth: History of demons.
The Witch: Back story for mythology of Witch's, used for Willow.
Out of Mind out of sight: The governments involvement in the Supernatural, used again in season 4. and we get to learn a bit about Buffy pre-slayer.
Prophecy Girl: Buffys death brings about the change in the slayer line, which effects every season after 2.
The Dark Age: Ripper
Becoming pt1: Buffy pre-slayer. History of Angelus, Origin of Drusilla.
Hush: Olivia tells us some stuff about Giles as Ripper.
That Spell Tara messes up, the one to find demons, a year later we find out it's cuz she thinks she's a demon.
Fool for Love: Spike back story, Slayer back story.
Get it done: Origin of the Slayer
End of Days: History of the Slayer, and History of the Scythe used in Fray(The comic)

I'm gonna stop there(And I have skipped loads, and thats all off the top of my head), But just wanted to say that Buffys back story is way better done, I personally much rather see the characters built up slowly and learn about the characters bit by bit, instead of in one big lump like in Charmed. It's up to the viewer to remember the bits of the characters history, and to put it all together, The viewer is more involved in the show, the creators know the views will remember bits and put them together to build up a complete picture, The creators of Charmed don't have that kind of belief in their audience, they know they wont be watching as hard, or looking for little bits!

I'm going out on a limb and proclaiming myself to be public enemy #1 on this board. I may need a witness protection program to avoid being terminated by ya all.
To me that's a good thing since it forces the fans of BtVS to come up with reasons to defend their favorite show.

In response to comments made...
I knew folks would bring up the issue of vampires into the back story debate. It's true that the series does explore the history of Angelus, Spike, Dru, and Darla. But that's not nearly enough to cover it for me.
What about the history of characters such as Willow, Xander, Giles...no such luck.
True, there is a mention of Giles and his family and how he became a watcher, but no full episode (and "the dark age" is not good enough).

To explain that theory let me go back to a charmed episode...
When the series started, the sisters did not know they had a magical heritage. The reason for that is explained in a later epsiode called "That 70s episode" where we find the reasoning behind the sisters not knowing what they were.
Also, why does the character of Phoebe have internal stuggles concerning staying with her sisters and going to the dark side of magic during season four? This is explained and covered in the episodes titled "Is there a woogey in the house" and "Pardon my past"
These are full epsiodes and not just a person giving one-liners saying something to give an explaination.

It seems like people are trying to say that anything Willow did before the series began is not important or relevant. Only things we see during the series are of any importance.
I get that Willow is not the main character of the series, but a little history of why she was the way she was (when we first see her) would have been nice--don't ya think?

It's safe to say some folks like one show and some folks like the other. Then there are folks like me that like both of them while seeing that one show has attributes the other one doesn't. If we could take both shows and put them together, we would have a top-of-the-line show

You see this is where I have to think, 'how dumb are you?' Charmed is written for a younger audience hence why they over explain things. It's not done as subtly as Buffy because... well most Charmed fans wouldn't understand or get it!

You are really not making a good case for yourself and if you think you are public enemy #1 then go back and read your excuses and it should be pretty obvious why you are!

I know you keep saying that Charmed has a more developed back story but it is a back story with Inconsistency's. Everytime I watch That 70's episode, they are screaming at me... if Grams had really cast the binding spell on the girls to bind their powers, why would she have had to make another one, like in Cat House, to bind their powers. They were already bound and if the spell would wear off on her death then what use would binding them again help.

Also if they had known about Nicolas then I'm sure Grams would have left a message in the book, especially as she knew she was dying, and another thing, if Nicolas had been visiting the house every year on Grams' birthday, why didn't Grams recognise him or at least wonder who he was as she must have been around when he started to visit!

If you are going to start saying that Charmed is better I think you need to look at the inconsistencies, I've gone into detail about 1 episode but If I went through the whole 8 seasons I'm sure I could find fault with every episode... give or take a few.

Buffy is the more well developed show and I think if you can't see that then you should go away and watch your DVD's again, and then watch your Charmed one's and compare them.

Also Buffy's history, is pretty much explained throughout the show, just subtly! Obvious you need it to be spelled out like they do in Charmed.

Buffy Anne Summers - Became a slayer at 15, approached by a watcher whilst she was at school, she used to be a cheerleader. Her parent's split up around the time she became a slayer, she spent some time in a mental hospital because they thought she was going mad after talking about Vampires. This is just off the top of my head and I can think of more but I can't be bothered to post them.

I'm going out on a limb and proclaiming myself to be public enemy #1 on this board.

Hell I could proclaim myself to be Johnny Depp's missus - it ain't gonna make it any truer 😉. Soooo got bigger fish to fry here....

If we could take both shows and put them together, we would have a top-of-the-line show

Nope, we would have a crappy show (probably like the awful Vampire High I sat through 10 minutes of the other day) which would last about 6 ep's then get cancelled, with the TV PTB hanging their heads in shame, wondering how they ever let such a mishmash of poorly thought out diatribe disgrace the cutting room floor. Originals, in both cases, are the best.:hehe:

You seem to be forgetting that Buffy is an ensemble show, you can't possibly give full detailed backstories to some of the "lesser" characters. Charmed has three main stars. The extras all have about as detailed (or I'd say less but for arguement's sake say the same) as Xander, Willow etc. What do we know about Leo. He was a medic in WW2, he died and became a whitelighter, and become the sister's charge. Thats the backstory of Leo before the show. Giles was a curator of a museem in London, and his father and grandmother were watchers. He studied to be a watcher and when the time came he moved to Sunnydale and become a librarian at Sunnydale High. While at university he became rebellious, delving into black magic for entertainment's sake with Ethan Rayne and others. It is around this time he got the nickname 'Ripper'. Himself, Ethan Rayne and the others tried to summon a demon (whose name escapes me now) and to do so they had to get a tattoo, which is still there to this day (obviously). That is the backstory of Giles before the show.

I'd say being able to give details of someone's backstory without spending a full forty-four minutes about it is better. Episodes such as "Saving Private Leo" feel tripe and filler. Yes we knew Leo was in the war, did we need to talk about it for another episode?

Its not like they just throw in one-liners out of nowhere. The gang aren't just sat around talking about a vamp nest and Xander goes "Yeah my dad drinks too much." Its part of natural conversation. When Buffy is upset about being forced into the slayer 'job', Giles symapthises with her by giving details of how he is forced into the watcher 'job'.

And Willow was as she was at the start of the first episode because she was geeky, shy, lacked self esteem and was bullied (or 'picked on' if you don't want to sound less harsh) and thats all told us in the first episode. We didn't need a very special flashback episode where a fifteen year old Willow is crying in her room about not being liked.

I'm going out on a limb and proclaiming myself to be public enemy #1 on this board.

No backstory to the Buffyverse? All I can do is shake my head, and wonder if whoever said that is joking. April fool's is over though, so I'm going to assume they want to be taken seriously, they're just a little ignorant of the facts.

Old Master did a great explanation of Angel's backstory. I'll link to it. I don't know if a Charmed fan can handle it though, because there are a lot of words on the page, but I'll try anyway. Below this paragraph you'll find what is called a link. Place your mouse cursor on it. Click. You'll go to a new page which will tell you Angel's backstory. Now, again, I know this will be a little too much information for a Charmed fan to handle, so I suggest you do this. Place your mouse on the right side of the Angel Backstory page. You'll see what is called a scroll. Scroll down the page. You'll see many, many lines of text. Take my word for it. All of these lines describe Angel's backstory. He is just one character in what we call the Buffyverse.

The Buffy fan creed

I (insert name) am a devoted fan of Buffy and a worshiper of Joss. I believe charmed is a poorly done, second-rate, cheap rip-off of Buffy and refuse to watch the sister witches. Because I do not watch the sister witches, I have no basis of fairness in a debate between them and Buffy. I just might skim through a couple Charmed episodes while drunk, but otherwise I wouldn't watch it at all.

That sounds about right, eh?

And to answer something from previous posts:
Sandra and Odin are elders. They can be seen chatting with Leo at the start of season seven's "The seven year witch" episode.

I Nerd4Hire am a devoted fan of Buffy and a worshiper of Joss. I know charmed is a poorly done, second-rate, cheap, cartoonish, rip-off of Buffy and refuse to watch the sister witches. Because I rarely watch a show whose only possible redeeming factor might be a little T & A. I have no interest in a ridiculous debate which dares to suggest the two series should even be spoken of in the same sentence. I just might skim through a couple Charmed episodes while drunk, but otherwise I wouldn't watch it at all.

That sounds about right, eh?

I edited it a bit, but...yeah.

Sorry Sorry Sorry I thought I'd clicked CC's rep button! I didn't mean to give you neg rep!!!! Sorry
Sandra and Odin are elders. They can be seen chatting with Leo at the start of season seven's "The seven year witch" episode.

Ok well if they can be considered on your main characters then we should be able to add characters like Parker, Scott hope, Mr. Trick, Kathy, Dracula and etc. to the Buffy main characters list! Why should those characters be on that list?

(And I have watched every episode of Both shows, before you write a letter on my behalf)

Before now your comments have remained in the 'absurd' catagory....this one pushed you RIGHT into retard....and not just slightly retarded but door knob humping retarded.
I nearly commented on N4H's post saying that was a touch harsh, but after such a retarded post by you, its evident that N4H's attempts at sarcasm was not only spot on, it loses all its sarcastic essence being that you seem to be that retarded.

The Chasing Cordy Creed
I, Chasing Cordy, am a devoted moron. I find i am ignorant of good quality TV in favour off poorly done copies of absolute crap with Three Witches who can't even stick to a basic Mythology. I realize in my retarded way, this is not my fault, as the man i wish to Marry, Brad Kern, has warped my mind with this vulgar piece of shite. When i am having a discussion online, i will not actually read any of the comments in favour of making my own in my small brain. I would only watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer when i am drunk, but my Mental Health Case Worker has issued every bar/store/person on the planet with a warning informing them i am not to Drink Alcohol as I don't need anything to destroy the remaining Brain Cells i have.
I, Chasing Cordy, realise i am a Freak!

Buffy Summers i am aware that you can't endorse this, nor can any 'Mod' so i apologise now😉:silly: :silly:

Hey i have some other important people in the Buffy.
The Female Owner of the Magic Box that died.
Percy
Larry

There are more, but if someone one of the minor characters talks to then there are so many...

oHhh don't forget Clem, he had a HUGE role....he was in a few episodes

SOMETIMES Charmed works for me. More so in the early seasons. Oftentimes the best ideas are spent early in a show's run. From the first season the series premiere "Something Wicca This Way Comes" was pretty good, I liked "That 70s Episode" with their mother Patty very much, and the finale "Déjà  Vu All Over Again" was sad and sweet-as well as thought provoking! And yes, there were good episodes in the later seasons as well. The family theme seemed to work well. Still, I pretty much gave up on the show more than two years ago.

It's just that (to me anyway) the show feels so vapid, so insipid. I think the actresses, by and large, play their roles well and the premise-a family of three witches-is no more silly than the vampire-demon-magical-mystical world premise of Buffy and Angel. But once I started watching Joss Whedon's shows I quickly discovered the substance in the writing and production. The stories of people lie behind all the magic and mysticism, and those stories are very compelling. That substance, for me, just isn't there in Charmed.

The show does get credit though for being the longest running show with all female leads. Eight full seasons.

I'm sorry but are you completely dense!

We have all stated at some time that we are people who watch Charmed on more than one occasion...

For your information I have watched Charmed since it started and I have seen each episode hundreds of times, but I am also a Buffy fan. I'm just realistic... I know how awful Charmed is because I've seen it change over the years and not just watched a few episodes.

I am even a member of a Charmed Forum which I have visited now for over 2 years. I have had discussions about this topic on the board and there are people there (Charmed Fans no less) who agree with me!

I've written a version of this for you!

I Chasing Cordy am a devoted fan of Charmed and a worshiper of Brad- I know how to kill a show- Kern. I believe Buffy fans have no brains and are horrible because they won't listen to my opinion! Because I have watched the show over a space of 3 months I think I know everything about the show despite not understanding any of it because I'm a Charmed fan and need to have everything spelt out to me.
