Charmed Vs Buffy

Ok so we mentioned a little about this in the charmed thread... but have you noticed how many episodes are alike between the two shows and they even use the same actors and actresses... i mean it is weird seeing a character from buffy playing a character in charmed... it is way too weird (i saw the buffy eps before charmed so thats why it is wierd) what do you guys recall being the same, etc.

Hmmm, how about practically every storyline since the end of season three when the gorgeous Shannon Doherty jumped ship and the show sank to the murky depths it currently resides at.

Hehe, sorry Charmed_slayer, you are obviously a fan and so i'm not going to rip into the series too much but i really cannot understand why it is still on the air. The writers have consistenly taken plots from Buffy and Angel, mixed them around a little and called them shiny and new stories for the Charmed Ones. The biggest example of this was, i believe, Piper's son, rapidly aged in a time travelly way, turning up with a grudge against his parents. How they got away with that Angel/Connor ripoff i will never understand.

Using Charisma on the show (as a character who got visions, no less) was just the last straw, as far as i was concerned.

Nope, again i'm really sorry to any Charmed fans here for saying this, but Charmed deserved the axe a long time ago.

Thanks you! Heh I have always suspected this, having a friend who is a fan of the show and keeps telling me about it.. But since I haven't watched the show much myself I didn't want to say too much about it, heh.. I have only seen a few eps but it seemed really crappy compared to BtVS so it didn't really interest me..

Ah yeah forgot about the Charisma thing, lol..
 
Well, apparently things are only going to get worse in the new series. From what i've read they have introduced a new character who just happens to be a blonde teenage girl who just happens to be in high school and it just so happens she kills demons in her spare time ... now where have we heard of a character like that before ... :lmao:
 
LOL no you guys i cant hate you for not liking everything i do! i will list some example tomorrow (simularities) i am going ( i have typing cramp lol and i am hell tired!) besides there is too many!

That is a really great attitude to have! Too many people get angry just because others don't always agree with what they like. :)
Also on Charmed they had an episode called Brain Drain, basically piper was made to believe by the Source that she wasn't a witch and that she was in fact in a mental hospital. Sound familiar???

There are a number of crossovers what with other realities (Paige crossing into it in the 100th epi, and on buffy numerous occasions, The wish, and dopplegang land), betrayal (phoebe and cole and buffy and riley) it's annoyed me for ages. I only got into Charmed because Buffy has finished.
 
Oh, i hate Charmed, never watched more then 5 episodes in full of Buffy 90210 @ Melrose place!!!
The reason this show is still on air, as opposed to any Whedon endeavour, is the backer, Aaron Spelling. This man is a God amongst the TV execs of LA, his shows are always a success, and i have no idea why. He must have prayed to the same Hell God, that made Baywatch a hit.
BUT in the defence of the actual show. You cannot complain that they rehash Ideas already used in other places, because thats mighty hypocritical. I know that Buffy has been innovative, but alot of the stories are based on 'already done' stories, infact you wanna go deeper, most of the stories in high school are clear rips of Beverly Hills 90120, with the demon twist.
If South Parks 'The Simpsons did it first' episode teaches us anything, its that there isnt much originality on TV anymore. All we should be asking for is, more creative ways to tell the same stories.
Now the stuff on Charmed you should be ripping on, the poor standards of acting. The OVER use of 'Deus Ex Machina', the fact itsnot captivatingly told, the stupid execs that thought Rose 'talentless, unsexy' McGowen could in anyway shape or form take over from the fabulous Shannon Doherty, with the whole..,,,you have another Sister, so we lied that you were the power of Three, lucky us for the coincidence eh?

But we also cannot forget, that Buffy writers watched and took stuff from Charmed......Joss admitted himself that the fabutastic line from Chosen, Oh.My.Goddess, was taken from a Charmed Episode!!

yeah he must have sold his soul haha - I always figured Joss stole the line as payback for everything taken from Buffy over the years haha.
Oh, don't get me wrong, i'm all too happy too agree that very few ideas on any television series are truly original. Most new episodes of a current show will have similarities to plots used in older series. Hell, Star Trek ran so long that it ended up rehashing plots of it's own shows, many times over.

The problem i have with Charmed is that it does it so blatently. It makes little or no attempt to hide the fact that it is using ideas previously seen on Buffy or Angel despite the fact that the show is constantly criticised for doing so. It's one thing to take a basic idea and rework it to suit your own characters, that has been done for as long as fiction has been written, but at the very least you should try and make it seem original. That is something Charmed never does.

Besides, Joss using a Charmed episode title as a single line in one of his episodes is a far cry from them copying the plot of an entire season of one of his shows! 😀
 
i used to watch Charmed when Shannen Doherty was on it. I think I watched the first season with Rose McGowan but lost interest after that. I haven't even seen the episodes with Charisma. Except for her last scene which was very disappointing.

Which was taken from the manga "Ah My Goddess" I'd suspect.

Anyway, I always felt that Charmed never found it's "voice", it wasn't sure if it was silly, sci-fi, drama, a family show or what. There was times when it worked well as drama, such as Death Takes A Halliwell but even then there were plot flaws (such as at the start why did just Piper and Prue go after the demon, they said they need more than one Charmed One and they know that the Power of Three is the best. Why not leave Leo with the doctor?)

Anyway yeah it copied Buffy a fair bit, but a lot of shows mimic/"homage" other shows/films.

As far as Shannen/Rose. I much prefer Rose, as to me Shannen seems to love herself. Its all just what I hear I suppose but I think Prue was made the centre of attention when in actual fact she was never that interesting. Plus its clear Holly is a better actresses than Shannen. Her early season four pain and jadedness was perfectly acted.

Do you mean All Hell Breaks Loose? That's the episode where Prue and Piper get caught on film vanquishing (or so they think) a demon.

I agree though. I really haven't been that into Charmed since the end of S4. It just doesn't seem to have found it's place. Some episodes they try to make them like comedies, some are full of Drama and some you just think, why did I waste my time watching that rubbish!

well she's in college if i'm not mistaken 😉 she has a dorm room and everything... but yeah.. there are some smilarities.:lmao:


yeah charmed has always done that, well specially from s4 til present... riped movies and other tv shows.... like an eppy where they ripped pirats of the caribien(don't remember if this was s6 or 7... i think it was s7 ep 14 or so.. LOL :conehead: ) are the writers without imagingation:lightbulb ? LOL...

i think charmed is okay though, i like it.. its tolerable. But both my Boyf and i agree.. Buffy is BETTER
 
Yeah it was season 7 polexia. It was called Chaarrmed! Not a very original episode name either!

I love Buffy the most but I do watch Charmed and if it wasn't for me been a member of TS3 a charmed forum, I would never have found these boards as I followed a link on there to here!

Don't worry about it Xander I'm good at remembering the names of Charmed episodes. Just call me a fountain of knowledge where Charmed is concerned!!!!

Ahah really? Lol this is just awesome...

I am far from against stealing things from other things (hey I'm the hugest Kill Bill fan, but let's just not start that discussion), as long as you do it in your own way, and in a good way. What's the point of just taking ideas from someone else and trying to fit them into your own story, just because..?
It's great if you can use someone else's ideas in your show/movie if it works, but just stealing stories and characters is just crappy..

Hmm, so what you are saying is that rather than rip off the first three seasons of Buffy they decided to rip off season four instead? That makes those Charmed writers sooooo much more original then! lol! 😀
 
Also Principal Snyder was the wizard in the episode called :we're off to see the wizard" (i think thats it) and also Ben off buffy was the handsome prince in th epsiode when paige bought the prince into their world and the episode when buffy can hear what everyones thinking is similuar to the epsiode primose empath when prue can feel everyones emotions/feelings and starts getting ill (too much emotions) and the canteen lady out of buffy was in this episode and she was the mental ward nurse (weird same sorta episodes with the same actor!) yeah there are sooo many similuar episodes and as someone said above charisma carpenter was the oracle in charmed and cordy in buffy... there are other similuar epidoes just too much too write!!

There was a day when the show was good.
That's it...just a day. Season three finale--best ever.

You'll know Charmed has hit rock bottom when there's a bald guy on set offereing cheese to people.
