If the administration of the club gave a manager more than 5 minutes to build a team maybe they would fair better.
In terms of the actual football, they do have an aging side and new blood will have to be brought in to rebuild the squad. But that takes time and patience. It takes seasons. I don't think Abramovich will bestow that mercy on any new manager that arrives there.

Completely the wrong decision in my eyes. AVB had potential to turn the club around, and was given not enough time. Any manger coming into Chelsea has to a) play the ageing players who aren't going to play every game of every week, they just aren't cut out for it anymore or b) tell them where they stand (to which my knowledge AVB did) that they need to accept a different role now where they are more mentors and play less regularly. Either way the manger risks dropping points on poor performance or a dressing room revolt. I don't see how it's going to work other than 2-3 seasons of one manager rebuilding a squad he can work with.
Both Liverpool and Manchester United have shown how the main men of yesteryear have gone onto accept a different kind of role in the team. Carragher, Giggs and Scholes and slowly Gerrard and Ferdinand are coming to a role where they don't play every game every week, they've done there job on the front-line and it's time to sit back and give the orders, coach the team and step in when needed.
I also think Chelsea's downfall has been not making the right decisions when signing new players. To me personally I've always felt they've gone for the headline signing Shevchenko and Torres etc. Rather than constantly bringing wave after wave of talent each season like other clubs and I think City might learn from this and not sign the big name but the lesser known talent and bring them through, I think we're beginning to see that with Ballotelli, with a bit of an attitude change he'll be a great player.
That's just my opinion on the whole saga. Not enough patience at all.
And Di Matteo is in a win-win situation, he does anything remotely good, he's turned the team round. If the poor performance continues he's inherited AVB's 'squad'

We get it. You don't like Chelsea.
I don't mind that Chelsea is having trouble, not that "my" team is doing any better. I do like AVB but there's no denying that their season hasn't been good. As been mentioned patience is important. Which these days seem to be rare both with owners and fans.
It'll be interesting to see who'll manage the team next season, and how long he get to stay no matter of results. And, obviously all the transfers that need to happen.
As for Torres he seem to suffer from what many players that break through at an very early age do. They don't last at the same level unless they adapt (Giggs being a superb example) for a whole career. Others, like Drogba blom late but keep a high standard in the later stages of their career. A striker, or any player, without confidence isn't wort much. How do a striker gain confidence? By scoring goals. I wouldn't rule out Torres completely but I doubt he'll ever be back to his highest standard.

Chelsea have just been prioritising money over good management. When they should have been concentrating on bring some new quality blood through the team they were focussing on big signings.
I don't particular want to see Chelsea crash and burn. They're not my team, but they're definitely not a team that I dislike. Having said that I think this should be a massive warning to Man City.
I think they're biggest downfall at the moment is Lampard and Torres. It is time for both of them to move on to other teams. Chelsea seem to be stuck in a catch 22. If they start selling off players they are going to have to face humiliation as they will be losing so much money. If they keep these players then they are never going to be the power house team that they once were.
Watching Chelsea it just looks like they don't want to be there. They are thinking of their next pay cheque, their next party, their next haircut, their next wardrobe. If anything they are thinking about their future, but to me it sure in hell does not look like they are playing for the fans or for the integrity of the club.
It seemed shockingly clear when I watched the Chelsea / Everton game in which Everton won 2-1. The Everton players were playing for a club, a lifestyle, and fans that they believe in. Chelsea may have had a team that is worth one Everton financially but in reality Everton's sheer determination and will to succeed overshadowed them.
If I could say one thing to Man City it would be to be careful. A brilliant club is not just built on money.

I think it is a bit more than that, to me he seems to want, instantaneously, what took Ferguson and Wenger decades to build. And he really really wants a Champion's League, and he wants it yesterday. The thing is you can't buy one of those. Great, era defining teams are built over time.
Yes, owning the club is a business, but at the end of the day throwing money at the actual football does not produce results. Case in point: Torres.

And I can't remember who said it here already, but it seems pretty clear that there are morale and team issues within the club. I don't think a manager has had the dressing room since Mourinho, and there is a major issue with how much influence some of the senior players have.
Yeah, the Board decided to get rid of him after the season got off to a bad start. IIRC there was a lot of dissension between him and Roman.
