Children's Names

A couple of my friends and I were discussing the way that children's names have changed in the half a century since we were kids, when Joe, Jane, Sam, Mary, and such were the norm, and even referring o someone as "William" rather than "Bill" was usually reserved for people like politicians, actors, or famous people of some other sort. (What actually started the conversation was that we were watching the latest "Terminator" movie, which featured actor Moon Bloodgood) but it just got me to wondering, if you were naming a baby today, what would its name be? For example, my son and his wife named their daughter "Atticus." (But I call him Spike)

I think you are right. It's not like I've lived through the name changes, but when I look at the names of people from my mother's generation, I feel like the names are a lot more.. standard.

If I would be naming a baby today, I think it would be Luna or Lily for a girl and Lucas for a boy.

I love really old fashioned names, for a girl I love Isobelle, Mary, Bess, Eliza...

For a boy I love Charlie, Billy, Harry, Henry.

My daughter is Abbie. My friends kids are called Wolfie and Lyric!! If I had a choice for a girl I would have chosen Faith lol. But we had to compromise.

I would choose the same name I chose almost twenty years ago - Patrick. My favorite name in the world. It also has the advantage of being pretty "normal" of a name without being too common. He gets called "Paddy" a lot (including by me). 🙂

I already know that if I have a daughter, I want to name her Jane. I absolutely love that name. But if it's a boy, I don't think I'll name him Jayne. LOL!

But I've liked the name Adam for a boy for years now, so maybe I'll do that. We'll see. 🙂

I really want identical twin boys so I can call them Fred and George. I totally would do it. 😀

There'll be a whole generation of kids with Harry Potter names. Lol. 😀

If I had a boy I'd want to name him Lincoln. Other boy names I adore are Harrison, Hunter, Carter, Tripp and Jackson. I'm not sure what name I would pick for a girl.

I made a list of names that I like in my Chem class last year but somehow I lost it. I really only have names for a girl which would be Kathryn Faith *Insert Last name here*.
I really liked the name Parker for a guy, but Buffy has turned me off of that name. 😀
I still have many many years to think about names though.

I think girls are easy. I'd pick Faith, Amber, April, Allegra or Romalie and for boys I like Parker as its a family maiden name or Finn, Xander and Harrison. I like to choose names that are different but not too extreme

Just had my 20 week ultrasound today and we found out we are having a baby girl! Our son's name is Aiden. The short list for our new baby's name is: Madeline or Sophie... but we haven't settled on anything yet, except her middle name, which will be Grace. This thread is perfect!

I never want to have kids but as far as names go I prefer traditional-ish ones, like William and Elizabeth.

Ok... in the event that anyone I know ever comes on here....here goes my anonymity.. I went for symbolic: Faith Alexandria Sophia (10 points to anyone who can accurately guess what it is for - just kidding)

My sister chose names based on what they meant with her first, then names from her favorite romance novel series for the second, and to family names for the third

I play a lot of baby name quizzes on sporcle.com and the thing I find most interesting is that boys' names haven't changed SO much. You still see James, John, David, Michael, etc up near the top as far as popularity goes...but girls' names change quite a bit over the years. Names that were really popular five years ago won't even show up in the top 100 today.

I like "different" names for the most part...but the fact that "Genesis," "Trinity," "Serenity," and "Nevaeh" were all in the top 100 for girls in 2010 makes me a little sad.

If I had a girl, I'd name her Arya. A boy, Malcolm.

I tend to lean more toward traditional names. My husband likes somewhat odd (to me) names. When I was pregnant with our first son, I wanted Aiden, Henry, Isaiah, or Max. He wanted Mikko, Tucker, or some other weird one. We named him Myles Gregory.

With our second son, I got my way on the name, but Ryan chose the spelling: Ayden Anthony. Both Myles and Ayden are original names to our family, but Gregory and Anthony are family names.

We are up in the air with girls' names if we every have one, so we'll see.

Oh, and I should add that two of my favorite names are Anya and Xander, but Ryan says we can't name our kids after Buffy characters. We shall see, my friends, we shall see...

I like the idea of naming your baby something unique. A client of mine, her son's names are Talon and Puck. I like that.

That said, I do like short, traditional names, like David and Jane. If I had two kids, I'd probably name them that.

I also heard "Bella" was on the top for popularity this year too, supposedly from Bella from Twilight. *sigh* It does mean Beautiful in Italian, though.

And what's up with names with a ''" in it? Like, "Te'keyiah" and "La'tiecha"? I see these a lot...they're confusing to spell correctly and it's also not clear where the stress is supposed to be, as they're often pronounced differently than is suggested...
