The list for popular baby names in England and Wales came out recently:

What do you prefer the more traditional names or the more modern ones? Also what do you think of the names celebrities give their children?

I guess I like a mixture of traditional names and modern names. I already have all the names picked up for my future kids lol, and I have a bit of both.

As for celebrity children, I think there should be some sort of law preventing them from using stupid names. North West?? REALLY?

For my girls I went with traditional names, but for my son we went with something a little more different. It's not so weird that people will make fun of him but I bet when his teachers call his name in school, not many (if any) other kids will be able to answer. 🙂

I like traditional names more myself...there's something too, "Ooh, look at me, I'm super trendy" when it comes to more modern ones. This opinion could also be entirely influenced by the people I know who have given their kids "dumb" names, so, no offense if you've named your child something less than traditional. You're here, you're pro-Buffy, nothing about you is dumb. Go you!

How many of you would want to name your child Buffy or Willow or Rupert or Anya or Winnifred or other names from the series? The more traditional names may be less unique but easier to live with.

And don't get me started on celebrities. Would you want to go through life with a name like "Moon Unit"?

I really like the name Xander, I'd gladly call a kid that.

I'll be using Irish names for my kids so in one sense that is very traditional but for most people they might seem unusual.

I'm the old fashioned type. I prefer the traditional names, even if they are considered commonplace. My wife is a retired schoolteacher, and she has said on more than one occasion that some of her students (1st Grade) had names that looked like their parents just took a bowl of scrabble chips out of a bowl and didn't even make any effort to arrange them in any sort of logical manner.

Ethnic names present their own special problems, of course. I will share this with you, and I swear that it's the absolute truth. June had a student a couple of years before she retired, a beautiful little girl whose family had just come to the U S from the middle East, whose name was pronounced "Shah Theed," and was spelled, "S H I T H E A D." Naturally, the school staff convinced the parents to change the spelling to something less suggestive.

I like traditional as well as original names... BUT the original names have a big 'but' attached to them for me. They still have to be names IMO... unusual names but names. Not stuff like 'Apple', 'Blanket' or 'Pilot Inspector'... For me SMG and Alyson Hannigan are even teetering on the brink of crazy names with "Rocky", "Satyana" and "Keeva"... Funny nicknames is one thing, that can be cute, but ultimately I think that a name should be something proper (if unusual) and the wacky monikers can be saved for pets. Your kid is gonna have it their entire life after all...

I work with children and some pretty weird and unusual names have cropped up over the past few years (I better not share them because of confidentiality and such like), it is truely amazing to me how quickly an unusual name comes to sound perfectly normal when you've known the child a couple of months. And the other children either don't realise that it's an unusual name or love saying that name so it sort of helps with their social status. So I've changed my opinion on weird names. I quite like them.

This! I've been working for years as a camp counsellor and horse back riding instructor. I've encountered so many weird names, but after a while, I took a liking for some of them. I just agree with Taake, no weird names that sound more like a dog's name than a person's.

Fandom has been such a big part of my life that any children I have will probably have a name related to BtVS, Supernatural or Leverage - nothing wildly outlandish, because I am always one of those people who kind of hates that people call their children insane names. My friends' step-nephew, Kal El, is really worst I've ever heard. His parents are current expecting another baby, which has me worried, lol.

There's also a tradition in my family where we're all named after relatives, so any kids I have will have middle names that are for someone else - most likely Jane or William in the first instances, so at least it'll only be their first names that I have to worry about when the time comes, lol.

Moon's siblings are just as bad Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan, and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen.

Then there's Bob Geldof children: Peaches Honeyblossom ,Little Pixie and Fifi Trixibelle plus Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily

Kal El is Superman, so not that different to what you said about naming after fandoms.

I know it's Superman, but honestly, Clark or Kent would have done the same thing and allowed the poor child to grow up with a normal sounding name. I may have said that I'd name my children after a character from fandom, but I also said that it would be a NORMAL sounding fandom name - Sam or Ruby rather than Abbadon or Crowley.

In my line of work, I get to hear what's new with the baby names about the place. One guy I know, had 2 kids named Tripp and Krash. When he told me his partner was pregnant again, I totally prayed to the PTB that this poor child would not be called Concussion or anything along the same vein. True story.

In terms of liking traditional or non-traditional names.... I don't have a typically traditional name in Westernised standards, because that's not where my family comes from. I've always been of the mindset that if you can scream out a name in public without cringing slightly (in case your child runs off), then it's probably not a bad name.

I decided to go with a name that could be what the child chose when she or he was older, and she did.
Bit like Nathaniel: the child might prefer Nathaniel, Niel or Nathan.
But don't you just love some of the silly names these days, the grown up children could always have their name changed by deed poll. Then send the parents the bill. Either that or become actors (any entertainers) and adopt a stage name. Like from North West to Bey Ondsay (Beyonce)

"Keeva" is a (poorly) Americanised version of the Irish name Caoimhe, which is actually pronounced "Kweeva."

Yeah, those aren't quite the names I had in mind. When I say traditional Irish names I mean names in the Irish language, like: Aisling, àilish, Ciara, Grà¡inne, Aoibheann, Niall, Donal, Fion, Pà¡draig, Seà¡n, à“isà­n etc
