Children's names

I don't have too much of an opinion on names, they generally become forgotten once you get to know someone enough and you just remember the noise you make to call them. 😛

My name is pretty traditional, but quite unpopular as far as I can tell.
 
What about the tradition of naming someone after someone else, a parent or grandparent for example?

My first son (if I have one) will be name after my late uncle.

I'm thinking of naming one of my daughter after my mom, but using a derivative of her name instead.

Nothing is set in stone, but I like the idea of naming someone after someone else that was dear to you. I guess that is pretty traditional.

Not that unpopular, as we share the same name 😛


I quite like the traditional ones. That's probably also culturally based, in Germany they're still pretty strict about what names you can actually legally give to a child.

If and when I have children I'll probably stick to something traditional, but I will make an effort to not pick a name that is currently popular. I wouldn't want my kid to share a name with three or four other students in their class. I also, would never get creative with the spelling of a name, like Jazzmyne instead of Jasmine. Names I really like change often, but one of my constant favorites for a boy is Lincoln.

I like that tradition, as long as the name isn't too dated.
 
I tend to lead more towards traditional names. My favorite boy names are Michael, Isaiah, and of course the names of my two boys, Myles and Ayden. I really look into the meanings of names and what patron saint they go with.

I don't have many girl names that I am absolutely in love with. I like the name Stacey, and I really like Lorelei, but not sure it's necessarily practical.

I like having family names in the mix as well, so my children's middle names are all family names.

As for celebrities...ai ai ai. I don't have a problem going with non-traditional or uncommon names, but some of them are down-right strange and I don't know why you would do that to your child. My first name is spelled in an uncommon way and that's annoying in itself!
 
i'm all for total freedom when it comes to naming children: all possibilities are on the table. that doesn't mean i don't think some names are silly, but there are no rules in my book when it comes to naming children. My wife and I named our first son hawk (after the bird) and our second son skyler (after schuyler, a steet sign we saw two days before he was born). both of our children have two middle names which we used to honor grandparents/family names, etc. give your kids something to live up to, i say. go nuts, make it up, get crazy. they'll live up to it.

Yes, I agree completely. While there are a lot of more "modern" names that I like, I think I'd stick to more traditional names.

I've also thought of fandom names, but I'd stick with the less quirky ones. I actually really like the name Willow and I don't think it's too out there or weird. I've worked with kids recently in a school, and there were at least two Willows there, so I think it's catching on.

I don't know. I love so many names. If I ever have children, the naming process is going to drive me CRAZY.
 
When we had our kids, my husband and I wanted semi-unique names (so they don't go to school with 12 other versions of themselves) but something people wouldn't be like "huh?" when they heard them. We're pretty content.
 
No plans to have children of my own, but I like a happy medium between "interesting" and "familiar". Nothing too boring, but also nothing too attention-seeking like Apple or Moon Unit (though I'm a Zappa fan!) or Jermajesty.
 
How do people feel about names that are more unisex, or ones that with a different ending can be for girls or boys?

I prefer names that are set to the gender of the child

Nope, I'm the complete opposite. I have a real thing about boys name for girls. Parker, Ryan, Dylan, Riley, Elliot, Stevie. I think it's so pretty and unique without naming a child Pilot Inspektor or Apple.

Plus, I grew up with a male cousin called Ashley, and one of my favorite male TV characters is called Lindsey. So gender specific names aren't really a big thing to me.

Her mother is Korean, I'm assuming that's why the unique first name.

Something about the discussion of names strikes me as...I don't know, racist maybe? It's really not up to me or us to decide what names are appropriate. There are lots of things that go into a name and ethnic customs at a part of that. I mean, sometime back in the US it would've been considered weird to know a kid named Jesus. Now of course, not so odd as it's an extremely common name in Hispanic communities. Among my 3 kids, one has an Irish name (not very popular right now), another has a very common name, & the 3rd has a very Italian name. I have a niece with an uncommon Italian name.

What I mean is that it's not that common for the U.S. It's Leonardo. Interestingly, he had another Leo in his class last year, but it was short for Leobardo. Hispanic family.

Nice. 🙂 Despite being a very Italian name, in Italy Leonardo is used very little. Probably due to Leonardo da Vinci or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 😀
For my children I chose classic names. Matteo e Marco (Matthew and Mark). If I had had a daughter, I would have call her Marta (Martha).It's a name that I love very much.

OT: Do you speak Italian? 🙂

No, not really. Although due to studying French in high school & college, knowing a bit of Spanish, and being exposed to some Italian growing up, I can understand some. Unfortunately my parents were like a lot of immigrants: they tried hard to assimilate. So while they spoke Italian to their parents & other relatives, they didn't teach it nor speak it to us.

I have a Matthew too! 🙂 If I had had a girl (I have all boys too!), I probably would've chosen Isabella (my husband's mother was Elizabeth). My first son is Sean (my husband is of Irish descent, red-head and everything!). It took me 3 kids to get an Italian name lol. My husband shot everyone down until I had a 10-hr labor plus a cesarean: then he said "OK, you pick the name!" 🙂
