Choice Of Weapons

(This has always interested me since I'm a collector of knives and edged weapons in general)

Have you ever noticed that Faith seems to favor knives over all of the weapons at a Slayer's disposal? She was always borrowing Buffy's stake, and I only on a couple of occasions saw her use anything else (except the compound bow she wound up shooting Angel with), but whenever there was trouble, she would whip out that knife, or more accurately, one of several knives. Even in Season 7, when she first went up against Caleb, she was armed with a pair of rather exotic looking daggers.

I've often wondered if there was some significant reason for Faith's preference on the show and I missed it entirely, or it was just a coincidence.

I think that a sharp knife is alot easier to wield than a sword, more appropriate than a stake(unless its a Vampy you are fighting) and more practicle than a crossbow.

I think Faith liked the simplistic accuracy of the knife.

Plus they look so darned cool the ornate ones.

Possibly they look and feel more dangerous? I can see that appealing to Faith very much.

I think that a sharp knife is alot easier to wield than a sword, more appropriate than a stake(unless its a Vampy you are fighting) and more practicle than a crossbow.


Knives are also more easily concealed than a sword, which is an issue if you find yourself in more or less polite society (how the Macleods do it, I'll never know!) and combined with Slayer strength, a good massive Bowie or kukri could quite easily decapitate a vampire. (And thanks to both of you for not pointing out the old phallic symbol myth associated with big knives. I doubt that Faith swings that way)

Maybe it has to do with the fact that for a knife to be effective you have to be in close range with your target. Faith always liked to fight and to get down and dirty. Whereas Buffy is more detached from the fighting and uses a sword which allows her greater distance from her opponent.

a knife has always been in freudian terms a phallic symbol, considering faiths interactions with males and her need to overpower them and be in control, i would say that her wielding a knife is highly appropriate...

or i'm reading into it to much and she just really likes shiny things! hehe
