okay, so in this episode, willow floats a pencil to kill one of the mayor's vamps when he is going to kill her. however, when i last watched it, i recognized that the sharp part of the pencil isnt wood, its lead. this is probably another patented stupid question, but why did it kill him, since the wood wasnt what was driven into his heart?
 
Well, there is wood surrounding the point. The 'lead' part of the pencil is just a thin shaft inside. The remaining is wood. Even when the point is sharp, there is still a cone of wood around the point.
 
so, hypothetically (bear with the weirdness), if you were to cut through a vamps heart with a sword, they wouldnt die because its not wood, so you could do that, and then if you put a cone of wood inside there, it would die? like, is the important part that the wood is in the heart, or that it is what pierces it?
 
I'd say that hypothetically speaking you would be correct in assuming that inserting a piece of wood into an open-heart wound (yikes!) would kill a vampire, regardless of how the wound was first created. Although I have to say, using a stake sounds way easier.
 
It makes sense to me what you're saying - go into the heart with all the wood and you should be a-ok...but sheathing a sword in wood sounds much tougher than making a stake like Allycat says 🙂
 
good point, jesterjay. if anything with wood works, why didnt they just put a small piece of wood on all of their weapons, rather than have stakes? what if they were cornered and only had a knife? then, so long as they had put a small piece of wood on their knife, it wouldnt matter that they didnt have a stake. this would make less to carry for them, because they need not carry stakes if the opponents arent vampires, because stakes would be ineffective, so why not add wood pieces rather than carry both?
 
You make an interesting point Spirit_Of_Fred. Although I wonder if it's possible to add wood to a knife somehow and if you can, won't that impair its sharpness and cutting ability? Of course, there's the question of how easy it would be to make such a custom weapon and at what price it would come? If it'd be as easy as just duct taping a couple of wood splinters to a knife, then that should definitely become Buffy's weapon of choice.

(BTW, there is of course the Scythe, which is a combination of an axe and a stake basically.)
 
How would you even attach the wood? Seems much easier to just use a tree branch or whatevers handy 🙂
 
i agree with 'wicked' why waste time on that when you could just look around for the nearest pointy wooden object. Or decapatate them.
